Ubisoft is one of the front-runners in the bid to buy THQ's assets, MCV understands.

We have been told that the French firm is keen to take over the publisher's brands and studios once THQ works through its current financial problems.

On Wednesday night THQ filed for bankruptcy as it handed over its tangible assets - including its studios and US operation - to an investment firm hoping to sell the business on.

No studios or offices are closing, but THQ is now very publicly on the market.

This 'stalking horse bid' process with an investor effectively writes off the company's debts but keeps its business as a going concern to make it ideal for acquisition.

Ubisoft had previously expressed interests in the firm's assets.

Now sources tell us it is already in lengthy discussions with the firm (and presumably its new owners at Clearlake investments) to forge a deal.

Price, however, is the obvious clincher - nose-tappers say that Ubisoft is after a bargain buy, and is prepared to hold-out until THQ is forced to sell off specific assets, as happened to now-defunct Midway when it went into bankruptcy four years ago.

If successful in the overall acquisition, though, Ubisoft would take over five studios and gain the rights to brands such as Saints Row, Company of Heroes, Darksiders, Homefront, Red Faction. Plus it would pick up the deals for games based on WWE and some Warhammer properties - WWE specifically would offer an expansion opportunity for Ubi, finally giving it a decent stake in the sports genre.
WOuld like to see what Ubi Montreal could do with Company of Heroes and Homefront in particular. I expected EA to be all over this but I can't really complain about Ubisoft.

well dont be too happy about the possibility of Ubisoft taking over THQ.
all they are gonna do is implement more Ubisoft DRM in upcoming THQ games and thats a really bad thing for us pc gamers who hate the obstrusive and crap DRM that ubisoft implements in their own games. Please no DRM

Ubisoft, you say? Their fondness for really retarded DRM bothers me. I've never bought a game that requires constant internet connection to play. Not that I have a firm stance on the matter, I just sort of think: "This game seems nice, might give it a try. Oh wait, always-online DRM, you say? Meeeh, maybe some other time." I use Steam, of course, but Steam's a different thing.

In other words, I'm just worried that whoever buys THQ's stuff will mess with the games currently in production, i.e. Metro, Company of Heroes 2, Bioshock Infinite and whatever else is being made at the moment.

Well Ubisoft isn't the most ideal one to take over THQ but they are better than a lot of other possible contenders such as EA or Activision/Blizzard. Ubisoft make some pretty good games and they are not usaully too afraid to at least try something new, we could maybe see some interesting stuff from them with some of THQs licenses. Hopefully they won't go too crazy with their retarded terribad DRM though.

So the third worst conglomerate that could finger that honey pot... well I can't say this is all that great.
I can only hope some of their stronger work horses like Relic manage to break away and make a run for it in all the confusion, otherwise an RTS will never again be seen from them.

As long as Ubisoft doesn't fuck with THQ published (and Volition made) Saints Row games then they could post a video of their CEO shoving pine cones up his ass and I wouldn't care.

That's... great? Ubisoft produces games from mediocre to pretty good in a big variety of genres. Anyway, they are far from being the worst choice, so I hope they will buy THQ.

Better Ubisoft than EA
I can, even if very-very reluctantly, go with stupid DMRs if the alternative to have the studio gutted for IPs and closed.

Yay, more games i'll refuse to buy.

I dislike Ubisoft more than EA and ActiVision combined.

I haven't bought an Ubisoft game since Assassins Creed.

I'm not sure what's worse, being bought out by a company that only makes shit so you don't care about it or being bought out by a company which makes good games with terrible DRM so you want to play them but don't at the same time.

... Maybe Nintendo should buy THQ? I mean, why not? It'd give people more reason to yell at/support Nintendo.

Ugh...Ubisoft? Really? They're going to ruin so many franchises like Company of Heroes and Metro 2033. Company of Heroes is going to turn into a console port, complete with UPlay and all.

That is a good point. Nothing says 'hardcore' like Warhammer 40,000 and Darksiders :p. WiiU exclusives, while I don't want, could even push me to buy one.

Eh, better than Activision and EA. And there's really only those 3 that could take over.
true that, i'd rather have the lesser evil take over, if it were EA or actiblizz we'd be in for some price gouging gone wild on THQ products.

No, no no no. Ubisoft might not be as evil as Activision or as incompetent as EA, but they have one thing that makes them even more despised than those two for me. Their utter disregard for PC. EA will screw over everyone given the chance, and Activision is smart enough to realize that one of their juggernauts is PC exclusive. But only Ubisoft goes out of the way to actively insult, discourage and hamper PC development, all the while blaming consumers and calling PC users all pirates.

I would hate to see what they would do to PC centered developers like Relic.
