Strangely, it wasnt from Yahtzee. It was a friend who said that.

Then I showed (forced under penalty of pain and property destruction) him Persona 3 Fes, and persona 4 and he changed his opinion quickly.
I'm not a big fan of JRPGs, but I love the Persona series. Atlus is wonderful. Square Enix, I could probably do without. Though I did enjoy The World Ends With You. The only reason I traded it in is because it drives me crazy when games utilize the touch screen to any significant extent. Give me the option to use the d-pad or give me...a different game <__<

Most games in the last 5 years do follow a very similar pattern, either a super-human space marine fighting some unspeakable evil (See halo). Or its a call of duty clone (ANY FPS), Simply put, If a game sells well, Dev's will copy that game. At this point in time, If you want originality, look to indev's making games like "minecraft", Or broaden your gaming horizon, try genres like RPG, action-RPG, MMORPG and RTS. There are alot of good games set for those styles, like mass effect 3, Cataclysm and The Elder Scrolls: skyrim. All of these games have at least 5X the game length and playability of most FPS's today.

I personally hate the goo modern FPS games have become, Having played all the C.o.D's and many games like them, I do not see why they are so well accepted, but that's just my point of view. As an avid RTS and MMORPG gamer I probably dont feel the same attraction as many do shooting someone in the face. But eh, live and let kill.
I find it strange that you cite the MMORPG and RPG genres as havens of creativity. Last time I checked, half of the MMOs coming out were WoW clones, and RPGs were more or less about a 'chosen one' trying to stop some newly unleashed horde of evil. Not that that's a bad thing (I'm a huge fan of RPGs), but the hypocrisy in those statements is astounding.

I remember aruing with someone who thought all FPSs where the same.

"Battlefield: Bad Company added destructable environments. MAG added large multiplayer games. Killing Floor and Left 4 Dead gave us intense zombie action with a high focus on co-op. Modern Warfare 2 handed us a shitload of weapons, attachments, perks, and kill streaks. Fallout 3 gave us a huge sandbox RPG. Portal gave us a short puzzler. Other games I didn't mention: Timesplitters, Bioshock, and Half-Life."

Calling all FPSs the same is like calling all RPGs the same: They're too diverse to be the same or hated by everyone.

I agree with this friend, now a days, most shooters are horrendiously similar, its sad really.

CoD has run its course over and over again, Halo never changes and when it does its stuff so small no one really cares enough, every other shooter takes these games and copies them.

Seriously, Shooters have become a bland canvas of uninteresting ideas and overused plots and character archetypes, This genre is in need of DESPERATE help. Better plots, more unique mechanics, and new ways to go through a game besides the same linear path and then endless multiplayer again and again.

It was mentioned before but TimeSplitters is a Amazing FPS, so different from the conventional shooter nowadays, and yet, people would rather earn useless "presitige" than enjoy a entertaining experience in a 10 hour story mode, not a campaign, a STORY.

To be honest, COD is pretty much nothing like Medal of Honor or Bad Company, which are nothing like Halo.
It's pretty much like saying "Oh I only listen to one band per genre because it's all the same anyway"
I don't want to come across as insulting by saying this. But anybody that says that those games are nothing like each other really needs to open their minds to the possibilities of games.

Sure, they have their differences, but if you really take a look at them, they are way too similar and unoriginal. With the exception of Halo for some of these, they are all still pretty much the same:

Same military concept (American soldiers, kill foreign country, odd obsession with Nazis and Russians)

Same general gameplay style (guns, classes, tanks, realistic to an extent, no or little fantasy or sci-fi elements, 99% of the time the goal is the kill the bad guys, blow things up, ect.)

Similar music (orchestra, rock, energetic, ect.),

Same theme (America crushes evil foreign country, good triumphs evil)

Same generally realistic art style.

And if someone says "Well, what else would you have in an FPS?" then you really, really need to take a moment to consider the possibilities.

Similar game modes (single player campaign, sometimes with co-op, multiplayer with persistent stats, unlocking weapons, ect.). Why does the general premise have to be about the military? Why does gameplay always have to be about killing people up front? What about sneaking past people, tricking them, stealing from them, using them to your advantage? Why is the fucking music always some fancy orchestra music with the occasional rock song? Why not electronic music, hip hop or jazz? (I will give Bad Company props for incorporating other genres of music into the game, and having a more unique, recognizable orchestra sound then other games). And perhaps most importantly, why does the theme always have to be the shallow and overdone "good triumphs evil"? There are no other messages a game can send? Look at books, films and TV shows, look at all the different themes that are explored, how some of them can make you think. Why is it that different themes are almost never explored in video games?

This kind of shit always angers me, because I feel like with all of these repetitive military shooters, we're really wasting an art form. Games have shown that they can be highly creative, original and groundbreaking, yet what's often looked at as the "standard" for games is stuff like Halo, Crysis, and COD. Those are good games, don't get me wrong. But so often what we expect to see in games is the same exact thing that was done before, but done better.

Lot of WoW fans in here complaining about the stigma that comes with playing it. Really, the addiction factor is different from other games. Certain friends have turned down so many social activities to continue playing WoW. I've even seen friends hanging out at someones house decide to leave the room to go play WoW on their laptop or desktop if it's their own house. This works to a lesser extent with other MMO's, but I have never heard of anybody doing this sort thing with other games.

But there is nothing wrong with them existing. I don't get the point of whining about it..
They share some similarities sure, but they are ultimately different games with different player bases who are all enjoying themselves. It's never "wasting" it, its fun.

They're all first person shooters I guess, but for the most part they are really different.

The most uninformed comment I have heard about video games has to be:
"You play WoW? You must have no life, play nothing but WoW, and dedicate your whole EXISTENCE to playing WoW!!!"
- The same can be said about *ahem* EVERY OTHER FUCKING VIDEO GAME FANATIC.
Hey, glad to see I'm not the only person that's dealt with that bullshit.
I used to play WoW alot, and my friends would facepalm everytime they wanted to hang out (which fell on every single tuesday/thursday night at 8:30 when I was supposed to raid) and say WoW took over my life, but they never said that when I played Oblivion, Windwaker, Twilight Princess, Half-Life 2, Starcraft 2, Ogre Battle 64, Brawl, .... the list goes on and on.

People who bash WoW seem to think that everyone who plays WoW is attached to their computer and ONLY plays WoW, and that just annoys the shit out of me.
They'll gladly shit-talk WoW players, but they won't shit-talk CoD fanatics, Halo fanatics, Fallout fanatics, and any other game that people really enjoy.
That's because with all those other games you played in your free time. Sure maybe you played them just as much or more, but you didn't set a schedule for it, but in WoW, suddenly you have to be there every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30. It's when you start planning things around your game that you have a problem. This doesn't come up pretty much anywhere but MMOs.
You still choose to be there at raid time. You don't HAVE to be there.
You just won't be raiding unless you are there at the allotted time.
Its like "if you want cake, be here at this time". You don't HAVE to be there, but you have to be there if you want cake.

While I wouldn't say they are all the same, the all fit a very similar mould to be honest, and frankly there are too many released each year, especially compared to other genres.

[ul]
[li]MAG [/li]
[li]BioShock 2 [/li]
[li]Aliens vs. Predator [/li]
[li]NecroVisioN: Lost Company[/li]
[li]Battlefield: Bad Company 2 [/li]
[li]Operation Wolfsburg [/li]
[li]Metro 2033
[li]Red Steel 2 [/li]
[li]Terror Attack: Project Fateh [/li]
[li]Sniper: Ghost Warrior [/li]
[li]Singularity [/li]
[li]Terrorist Takedown 3 [/li]
[li]Halo Reach [/li]
[li]GoldenEye 007[/li]
[li]Call of Duty: Black Ops[/li]
[/ul]

That's 15, and it's only the ones I could find in a 5min browse of wikipeida.

There were like 3 RTS games released this year, Starcraft 2, C&C4, and Supreme Commander 2 that I can recall.

So when people who aren't into FPS games get bitchy about them, it's because they see them choking out the games they are interested in.
I play RTS' and FPS' so I don't really whine about either.
But it would make sense for people who don't play FPS' to whine about them.
FPS' are much more mainstream and easy to produce compared to RPGs and RTS'

Never heard him say it directly, but someone told me this is his point of view. Haven't had the chance to sit him down and knock some sense into him yet.

To elaborate on my view on that: WoW is a game like any other, it's just a lot longer and has a lot more content to it, so some people who can't manage their time well lose themselves in the game and fuck themselves over. But if they didn't waste it on WoW, they'd waste it on something else.

If someone can call Timesplitters and CoD the same game with a straight face I'd call them a demon or a liar.

Because Timesplitters is to freaking funny to play without your sides splitting from laughter. Great game, great humor and It's TIME ta SPLIT!
TimeSplitters is the exception, not the rule.

I can name several FPS that are vastly different from eachother

TimeSplitters
Red Faction
CoD: Black Ops
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Battlefield 2
Counter Strike
Team Fortress 2
Fear
Borderlands
Serious Sam HD
Left 4 Dead
Killing Floor

They're all so different it's hard to say they're similar at all with maybe the exception of Battlefield 2 and Bad Company they're similar but different. None of them really could be confused with eachother with even just the visuals.

Yes it is.

I agree with the rest, but Medal of Honor was built from the ground as a Modern Warfare 2 knock off... And MW2 is already pretty bad as is.

BC2 is very similar in a lot of aspects, but I forgive it since it still has it's own character, and it's better at everything than the aforementioned.

That said, while there are a lot of bland formulaic FPSs out there, you still got a lot of range in the genre, like Halo, TF2, Borderlands, BC2, Bioshock, ARMA II, Portal, etc. But off course, certain aspects are bound to overlap... Namely the first person... And the shooting... Anyone who expects differently from an FPS is a bit of an idiot if you don't mind me saying.

Why? Because I find them enjoyable and fun with friends.

Edit: Yeah, my brother likes to label every casual game crappy Farmville knock offs.
Like every single one? How could he think that about LBP? Theres nothing even remotely similar between the two.

Hey! No complaining! My Dad still calls every single game with a firearm of any form 'Shoot-em-up' games.

Then he usually goes on about how they're designed for babies and they will have no place in my adult life...
You both have it easy, my parents still call games "stupid things for kids, why don't you watch a documentary, read a factual book and go start working". Apparently being a Uni student doesn't cut it and I'm no longer allowed relaxation time >_>

OT: As above, really.

Its funny that the FPS genre is called "the same" or the one genre that doesn't do anything great. But then I look at the crowd its coming from.

In a way, two games from the same genre are pretty much clones of each other.

Well, that's not the most stupid comment I've ever heard regarding games.

My friend said "Mass Effect 2 is like a bland generic FPS".

The worst part is that he's played it, knows the difference between first and third-person shooters, and when I told him he meant TPS, said "No, I mean FPS".
