There are alot of good games set for those styles, like mass effect 3, ... and The Elder Scrolls: skyrim. All of these games have at least 5X the game length and playability of most FPS's today.
Wow, you tell him to broaden his horizons, and then give examples of games that aren't even out yet, and you don't know much anything about.

Great job.

If someone can call Timesplitters and CoD the same game with a straight face I'd call them a demon or a liar.

Because Timesplitters is to freaking funny to play without your sides splitting from laughter. Great game, great humor and It's TIME ta SPLIT!
TimeSplitters is the exception, not the rule.
I can name several FPS that are vastly different from eachother

TimeSplitters
Red Faction
CoD: Black Ops
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Battlefield 2
Counter Strike
Team Fortress 2
Fear
Borderlands
Serious Sam HD
Left 4 Dead
Killing Floor

They're all so different it's hard to say they're similar at all with maybe the exception of Battlefield 2 and Bad Company they're similar but different. None of them really could be confused with eachother with even just the visuals.
Yes they look different, but they all play out the same.

Also, please don't list Black Ops. It's a horrible game.

Well, don't know if it's the most uninformed comment, but whenever I mention that I play video games, people seem to automatically assume I play either WoW or EVE Online because their first questions are ususally "Do you play World of Warcraft?" or "Do you play EVE Online?"

I've never played either one, nor do I ever intend to do so. Just don't interest me. Annoys me to no end when it's assumed that every video game playing individual plays WoW or EVE Online...

Actually they don't play the same, not even remotely so. If you tried to play Black Ops the way you play Left 4 Dead you'd be in trouble.

And I believe I'll mention whatever game I feel is a good example :) I don't believe in censorship.

I walk in a linear path n shoot stuff in both games. Left 4 Dead has more charm, though.

And I mean Black Ops is a horrible game as in quality.

If that's all you think it takes for a game to be the same then that's really your opinion, the story is different, the way the weapons handle is different, the enemies are totally different.

And again, that's your opinion about Black Ops, I think it's a great game.

To be honest, I couldn't give a crap provided I enjoy the game, and I enjoy most FPS games. I don't really care if BlOps' plot is dull or whatever; it was really fun, in a dumb kinda way. The same way that The Expendables is a kickass film.

I really hate people who say 'Everyone who plays XXX is retarded" or use 'CoD player' and such as derogatory terms. Especially with CoD (or Halo, but a little less so these days), it seems to just be 'let's hate what's popular'.

Any kind of video game used to be 'sitting there doing nothing but staring at a box' to my parents. Now I have no idea, since I left home and dropped that argument years ago.

Well, in recent history FPS games have become cookie cutter "COD at heart" games, what with the same gameplay, mechanics, etc. Last good recent FPS was the COD 4, because it was fresh, at the time, and it actually needed a coherent story that didn't rely on explosions or a built in fan base to sell. *coughMW2cough*

But for originality, at least, something different, I'd recommend the STALKER series. Yes, they're buggy, but even without patches and mods up the wazoo, it's immersive, tense, and honestly fun. Also helps that it's open world.

Another one I'd recommend is Deus Ex. Might sound like the same old argument, but no game has ever managed to mix a multi-path FPS with RPG mechanics and a brilliant, if crazy, story.

Just saying.

Recently, a classmate said that 'Video games are for people with no life'. I was about to go on a long, Extra Credits-quoting screed about why he was wrong, but I decided to save us both the time.
Go with what I would have said. "You mean I'm dead? Because people with no life are usually not alive." Works like a charm.

My mom thinks every video game out there is exactly the same thing.

My dad called a game I was playing, and I do quote: "a 3D death simulator."

The game I was playing? Animal Crossing.

That's because with all those other games you played in your free time. Sure maybe you played them just as much or more, but you didn't set a schedule for it, but in WoW, suddenly you have to be there every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30. It's when you start planning things around your game that you have a problem. This doesn't come up pretty much anywhere but MMOs.
It's not really a case of "planning things around your game", as it is "planning things around other people". WoW didn't decide that he had to raid at 8:30, it was the people he was playing with that decided that 8:30 was the most convenient time for people to get together. Which is something that happens all the time when you arrange to do something with other people. If a group arranges to get together and play a game of football every Saturday, you don't blame football for making everyone plan their schedules around a game. You "have" to be there because skipping it would be letting down your friends. It doesn't really have anything to do with WoW.

If such regular group activities aren't your idea of fun, then you don't have to involve yourself in any. But there's no sense in attributing to WoW something that exists in pretty much all games that one person has ever played with another.

My friend hates every single racing game that doesnt have a car moding option like in nfs underground.
If you dont like fps just dont play them. Im not a big fanboy myself but i enjoyed playing through the call of duty campaigns and cant wait to play another quake installment.
