The sad thing is with male heroes we CAN find playable characters designed to be ugly that are still heroic. However the same can't be said for female leads. At worst a female character looks "average" and game developers will rarely risk having an ugly character take center stage.

It certainly adds contrast. and i`m just glad most shooters are in first person so you don`t have to look at their ugly mug all the time (prophet for instance)

The "ugliest" protagonist I can think of would be Pigsy from Pigsy's Perfect 10, a short bit of DLC for Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. It worked because Pigsy is a likeable kind a guy and the gameplay revolved around his technical abilities, instead of athletic leaping.

Thanks for giving me an excuse to post this.

That character isn't ugly, per se. This is just how the fans want to pretend they look: rugged and masculine with cocks all over. If you've ever stumbled upon any bara doujins, it's a lot like that (also my eyes why god why).

To be honest, I don't know when it comes to ugly protagonists. I want to say Kain and Raziel from the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver games, but they're not really "ugly" either. The Nameless One is fairly inoffensive too.

Frank West is pretty ugly, now that I think of it. But hey, he's covered wars.

Heh...ugly men doesn't seem to be that big of a problem. Women on the other hand, and YOUNG women especially, fuhgetabboutit. At worst they'll be just bland...but never hideous/ repulsive (unless we're talking about something along the lines of the archetypical witch).

Sometimes Ugly and cool looking, go hand in hand. Look At Kain or Razel, Kratos etc.

Wait. Why is Shepard up there? He's customizable, and why is Niko up there? He's Russian. They tend to be white.
OT: Markus Fenix. It make you wonder what diet and exercise you have to go through to fashion yourself into a brick.

How does his being Russian excuse his utterly generic short brown-haired 30-something white male character design?

OT: Agent 47 from the Hitman series.
He isn't really ugly, he's just has a very average and forgettable, if sinister, face, something that I thought was rather interesting because his character design is actually brought up in-game as one of the reasons he's so good at blending into crowds during missions.

Russian's tend to be white. A character in his thirties show experience and youth. Niko also seems like the type of person who would have short hair. He has reasons.

I thought Chuck Greene from Dead Rising 2 looked like someone punched a block of modeling clay, painted it, and then put the mo-cap camera to it.

Issac Clarke from the Dead Space series is no looker.

Those Silent Hill nurses (but then again... well Deviant Art again makes a liar out of me and they're technically antagonists I know.)

Male Hawke's default appearance doesn't make you say roguish good looks. Lady Hawke is hot though.

Some of my male and female Mass Effect characters have been called ugly. However, this is really the definition of moot because beauty, eye, beholder of, and all that jazz. Still, it is kind of fun.

Lara Croft used to be the most unattractive thing to me in video gamedom, until GI did that shot of her covered in blood and dirt. Go figure.

It's possible to justify his character design based on his background and character, but there's still not really anything that sets Niko's visual design apart from any of those other lumpy faced brunettes, so it makes since that he'd be on that poster.

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines gave you the option to play some bloody ugly protagonists, the most obvious being the Nosferatu, but some of the other character models were fairly intimidating as well.
