So does anyone have... Odd ways of playing certain games/gametypes/characters? For example,

I play Mu-12 as a almost pure keepaway character in BlazBlue. She has guns, swords, arrows seems obvious right? Then I ran into another guy who played her as pure rushdown with zero guns ever. Raises the question of whether i've misinterpreted how to play her or if she's just that flexible.

All I do with Naoto in Persona 4 Arena is whittle down their Fate cards to zero then slap them with Hamoan for the instant win. That's 100% my game plan from the word go. I don't y'know reduce their health to zero with damage moves or anything... That's too mainstream. >.>

(Opponent starts with 13 cards, Naoto's moves decrease card counter, hit zero cards and Hamoan or Mudoon instantly kill the guy if they connect. They do literally zero points of damage otherwise.)

Hey it's either get shot with bullets from afar or get instakilled by my super when you try to close the gap. Your move.

I'm not even that Astral obsessed prick who sees his character glowing and is like "OH FUCK! STYLE POINTS! CAN'T WAIT TO THROW THE GAME BY MAKING STUPID DECISIONS!"

My friend also plays Vayne as a early game Champion in LoL. As in he goes all in at level 4 and usually wins. Lol what?

Also featuring AD J4 MID. Oneshotting ALL the Twisted Fates.

Hmmm...interesting topic. I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're aiming for because I am intentionally playing the game wrong but in older RPGs like Baulder's Gate I would sometimes play an everyman that really had no business on the battle field. I would create a mage, put all my points into mage stats and then give him the best sword and armor he could hold and send him out to be a melee fighter. It made the game much more difficult obviously but it was kind of fun to play from a different perspective, I wasn't the chosen hero, just some guy in way over his head and trying to do the best he can.

I also once played through Devil May Cry 3 using nothing but the gunslinger stance and pretty much trying to never use my sword. Sometimes it was impossible not to use the sword because certain bosses just wouldn't seem to get hurt but I could get through most normal encounters without getting my ass chewed up too bad.

There was also the time when I gave up on guns in Bioshock 2 because if you build your character a certain way you can basically use unlimited plasmids as long as you use the drill to occasionally kill guys. So I spent the entire second half of the game shooting bees out of my fist and then drilling everyone in the face. Tougher enemies I might set on fire or throw things at but it was mostly bees and face drilling. It was quite fun. I completely stopped looking for ammo. Although considering that you could build your character that way I guess it was expected people were going to do that.

...I used to play Thor before his buff.
I used to play Thor WELL before his buff.
I used to play Thor pretty damned good before his buff.

Then his blasted buff came up and all skill was tossed out. No V shaped walls to trap people, it's just STUN LOLOLOL.
Not using Beserker's Barrage as a counter to Anhur's impale, now it's just SPIN TO WIN 109 per tick, 100% SKILLS SCRUBS.
No well done double taps with Attunement, it's an OH SH- TELEPORT NAOW skill. Thor can go sit on a rusty spike.

Not in fighting games . Although i try to do things ( and play characters )other people don't just to be different . But i usually rush down no matter who i'm playing .

Grappler? Rush down
Zoner? Rush down
Keepaway? Rush down
Rush down ? Rush down.

Now in pokemon ( which is a strategy game ) i did this all the time . I was all abot predicting what my opponent would do . Which wasn't that hard . At a competitive level , everyone knows pokemon weakness and highest/lowest stats . Which made a lot of people predictable.

I'm not sure if it's relevant since its a bit different, but Ever since I first got Ocarina of Time when I was 6 or whatever I've been using a g,itch instead of doing it the right way without realizing it. In dodongo's cavern there's a room (The room where the bomb bag is) where you have to use a bomb flower to blow open one of the rock wall things covering the door. What you're supposed to do is hold the bomb flower for long enough that it explodes in the the air since there's a gap and you can't just set it down near the door. What I've always done is thrown the bomb flower so that it gets glitch stuck between the ladder and the wall at the top. I can do this pretty much every time now XD

I never knew you were supposed to do it the other way until I played it again on the 3DS and realized.

So 29 of the 30 times I've beaten that game I did that part wrong XD

I went through the first two Kingdom Hearts games without using or even realizing I could use Summons, and I never once used my Drive Gauge for Forms in KH2, again because I didn't know I could. I guess I was never very curious about gameplay in KH. The disappointing thing is that neither of these things is necessary to beat the games (evidently), which led me to believe they were just shallow tack-ons. KH2 in particular is a walk in the park (of cutscenes).

I also played through Darkwatch without using any of the vampire powers Jericho gained every now and then. Hell, I went through 3/4ths of the game without even firing a gun. It's just easier to let the dumb mooks run up to you and one-hit kill them with a melee attack. Maybe I should've played in a higher difficulty.

Heh, I've always been a big fan of subverting the obvious roles of characters and items in games. Especially when playing against other players, as an unconventional tactic is excellent for throwing people of their game. Of course, this relies on the game having enough freedom in it's mechanics for an "unconventional" tactic to be significantly different than the conventional one. Most shooters, for example, leave little-to-no room for creativity in this regard.

Eve Online is probably the game that's given me the most freedom in this area, though the actual mechanics are probably nigh-impenetrable for a casual discussion. I'll try to speak in non-technical terminology and keep things simple:

For those who are unfamiliar with the MMO, it's a player driven game with real-loss and the in-game currency has an indirect, legitimate, real monetary value. Most of the community rolls in large groups in order to prevent as much loss as possible, and even when they are looking for fights with other players they try to pick on smaller groups. I do the exact opposite. Not only do I look actively look for fights, but I do so by myself and I want to be outnumbered and out-gunned.

Now, the ships you fly a lose are out fitted with modules which actually give your ships their capabilities. Even in the broad strokes the fitting system gives you immense variety in how you can fly - while still allowing for a mind boggling amount of tweaking. That said, each ship has limits which restrict the number of practical thing you can fit and the ships natural bonuses and the hardcore nature of the game gives way to min-maxing which whittles the number of significantly different fits that the experienced player-base will use to only a couple per ship.

This, however, is a player driven game and I hunt players. I learned pretty early on that to win a fight you don't need to beat the ship, but the player flying it. Players, generally speaking, will make their engagement decisions based on whether they believe their ship wins in an almost rock-paper-scissors fashion against their targets common fittings.

This isn't stupid on their part, but it leaves a nice opening to exploit the games "meta". One of my favourite ways of choosing my ship and it's fittings, is by finding one where the solid, common fits have hunters I can out manoeuvre by creating a fit which - in other circumstances - would be a particularly poor choice. The almost always run completely counter to the ships natural bonuses, but when combined with surprise, preparation and a little luck give me the upper-hand in situations where "better" fittings would crumble.

It's a little corny, but it's one of the ways I turn the hunter into the hunted. Actually, that's not really what is happening. It's where I get the hunted to think he is the hunter. Better? Not really.

Wow, even trying to speak in general terms that was pretty much impenetrable. I should play simpler games. =/

Sides note; for those who are wondering why I'm insane - it's because it makes me feel like a space bad ass. What higher pleasure can be found than that?

First time I played Dota2 I had no idea how the fuck to play. Still won though.
"WHY WOULD I LAST HIT AUTOATTACKING PUSHES THE TOWER FASTER GOD THIS PURGE GUY IS SUCH A FUCKIN' SCRUB"
Also it kind of needs to be said but if you play any game with a major online community no matter how good you think the singleplayer makes you YOU ARE NEVER PREPARED.

I used to always ask myself this question, but I figure that if something is working, then I am playing "how I am supposed to play." If it works, it works!

That being said, I generally default to a careful, defensive style in games. I then play more offensively depending on my read of the opponent.

Hell yeah! Pokemon contains so much more depth than one would initially expect. It's pretty damn great.

In Dragon Age: Origins, I had a rogue dwarf that I used as a tank. People thought it odd but I found that it worked for me. I guess that was the 'wrong' way but it was what came naturally to me.

I tend to do it because I like the characteristics of one with my playstyle. I think of it as why would I get a character suited to tank to be a tank? I rather have nifty abilities that complement my style rather than enhance it.

I did the same in the old Smackdown! wrestling games. My friend always hated my characters because no matter the positioning I had a move that could start a pin. Made me a threat from everywhere but apparently I was alone in this design methodology amongst my friends.

Now I'm no expert fighting gamer but I actually really liked Soul Calibur IV (V sucked).

I thought Talim was an okay character who relied on her speed to get in close and nibble your opponent to death or some variation.

However after a while I kept coming across Talim players who'd do the same long-winded combo with her over and over again and nothing else.

Frankly that approach bores the shit out of me. Who in their right mind actually wants to do the same actions over and over again? I don't understand that mindset.

I moved away from Talim and back to my favourites like Seong Mi-Na and Tira and had a blast but I always felt bad that Talim was played like that.

*sigh* I just don't get repetitive folks.

I go for a weird build for Bounty Hunter in Dota 2 and that's about it.
I'm curious, what would this build be?

OT: I generally use sub-par builds and then whine all match of how bad they are and how much Riot/Icefrog sucks. It's some kind of stockholm syndrome, not sure why I do it

ME1 and ME3 I pretty much wet shotgun the entire game. 2 It seemed a bit more normalized but in 1 I was sniping enemies with it and in 3 it was still very powerful.

After more than 6 years of playing Dota I still get amazed by different things. As "Oh... riiiight... it makes sense to buy Phase boots on Naix" or "OH SHIT SHIT SHIT! You can't snowball to just anyplace with Tusk! BOOM! DEAD!"

In Pokemon 4th Generation and after, I use a Toxic-Stall/Sweep Gyarados. Moveset: Toxic, Protect, Dragon Dance, Aqua Tail/Waterfall. It's unusual, as most Gyarados are either used as a general attack monster with a pretty good movepool and it's immunity to spikes due to it's Flying type (though Stealth Rock tears it apart) or use it as a sweeper. I open with Toxic, immediately use protect as Toxic's poison damage increases (doubles?) with each subsequent turn, Dragon Dance to boost attack and speed, protect again, dragon dance, protect, and by this time if two dragon dances alone aren't enough to wipe the bastard in one hit, then the poison damage will make sure of it. I then proceed to sweep the remainder to the best of my ability. Also, make it hold a focus sash to prevent the opponent from switching out to electric to one shot him. If they do, that's just another Toxic to get off before Gyarados bites it.

I also used a Rogue tank, but i was playing on a lower difficulty so it may not count
Also in DAO,whenever i played a Mage i put my stat points in strength and used swords and armor and stuff

In Castlevania HD,if you ever see a high level Soma who is not doing chapter 10,he is probably dual wielding Valmanways,i use Muramasa and Valmanway
Dual Valmanway playstyle
1)Mash attack buttons
2)repeat step one
Muramasa+Valmanway playstyle
1)jump
2)use Valmanway
3)use Muramasa
4)repeat step 1 teough 3

Ive only seen like 2 other people do this, ever
