It depends on what they mean by "influencing public opinion." But its pretty much widely known the amount of power 3rd parties have over the various UK governments (cough cough news corp) . I can't seeing them having complete control of the government (i.e The Company off Prison Break) but they do have considerable influence

This. Politicians lie through their teeth constantly. Remember the thing about how Sadam Hussein was supposed to be able to kill us all within 40 minutes? And the justification they used for cutting EMA was a lie too. They massively skewed the results of some random survey to get that. And pretty much all claims that any politician makes to get elected too. They will say anything they want to get people to do what they say.
