No need for bulletproof vests anymore, just have soldiers modified to be superman-style bulletproof!
Great idea! And when the whole world is supplied with these unstoppable supermen we can all just lay down and die, squishy mortals that we are 'cause why the hell should they listen to us? We and our weakness for bullets n' all that.

OT: I just wish that for once we could refrain from weaponizing new technology. I'll probably still be sceptical, but no less grateful for new scientific discoveries until that point.

I love science (even though I'm not particularly good at it), and there are few things I despise more than unnecessary scaremongering about science, especially when people use the 'Frankenstein' comparison (because for one thing, Frankenstein never actually happened).

But you know what did happen when a bunch of scientists were just given complete free reign to dick around with a technology they didn't fully understand for no more reason than "because they could"?

Chernobyl happened.
Initial response:

I sincerely hope this was just a terrible attempt at trolling.

Because if not ... wow. I just don't even know what to say to this.

If anyone needs me, I'll be in the corner weeping for the state of humanity.

Less caustic response:

These two situations are completely dissimilar.

In this case, a scientist is pushing the boundaries of science using new technology and novel methods to create something heretofore unseen on Earth. In your example, technical deficiencies that would otherwise have been immediately rectified had they not been present in a communist regime defined almost entirely by its government's inability to admit that it was crumbling politically and economically caused an immense tragedy.

I would say you're comparing apples and oranges, but more accurately you're comparing penicillin and a rabid bear.

Like I said, I love science. But I also acknowledge that science with no restraints and no real point could be just as bad as no science at all.
Chernobyl was a Soviet nuclear reactor explosion in the Ukraine. It wasn't a novel experiment people decided 'to dick around with a technology they didn't fully understand for no more reason than "because they could"'. You must understand that a huge proportion of the world's energy is produced in plants just like those at Chernobyl. This has been the case for decades.

Save some room there for me please!
Me too.

Finally; someone's actually tried it. Dawkins theorised (not sure if originally or not, but hey) that this could happen, he gave the example of silicon based life. How cool is that though? We've proved that life can be unbelievably different to anything we could even think of... SO COOL! *nerdsquee!*

This is the second Scottish attempt to create living metal; the first resulted in this:

What do you mean 'attempt'.

Irn-Bru was a fucking success!

A tasty, tasty success!

OT: Interesting, I wonder what kind of things this could be used for.
It may be tasty but it doesn't stop it from being eeevil.

I only ever touch Pandora's fizzy drink when I'm hungover.

Yes, as a biomechanical engineer at heart, this excites me greatly. It means we might be able to fuse metal to our bodies! Remember that invention you all had about the surgical tubing through your body that acts like a water cooled PC? Yeah, this will help make it possible.

We know better now, but the reason the reactor went critical in the first place was just because they tried to see how hard they could push it, and they basically ignored all the safety warnings right until it blew up in their faces, and they did do this for pretty much no other reason than "because they could".

Really that is all the justification you need to do something.

Chernobyl happened because the people in charge of it were incompetent.

My jaw actually dropped from the stupidity of that comment. Please enlighten me what you think caused the Chernobyl disaster. I could use a laugh.

I could've sworn I saw one of those EBooks in Sarif HQ mention something like this in Deus EX HR. Glad to see the future is coming so fast even videogames are having trouble keeping up with sounding unrealistic, I wonder if this could actually help with cybernetics since a material that acts like organic cells sound like something the would be useful in that field.

Exactly. All I was saying was that if we start completely ignoring the dangers of exploring the unknown, and doing it just because it's cool, then we are also being incompetent.
