PS2. Actually scratch that, PS3 or PS4. Whichever gets me the most exclusives/remastered games.
Since there's no stipulation against a specific version of a console, you could go with the original 60GB Phat PS3. That's the one that has the full PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility i.e. three complete libraries on one console. And if the small hdd capacity bothers you, you can always replace it with a bigger one.

It would be my choice.
Sure, sold. Also free online!

Am not that emotionally invested in gaming as a long term hobby, so would be more than ok ditching it in favour of another less restrictive entertainment within this hypothetical

No personal computers or hybrid consoles that can play more than one.
Does this include proper backwards compatibility? I'd pick a 60GB model launch PS3 if it doesn't. If we're not modding out hacking the thing, it's the best choice period. Perfect PS3 playing and backwards compatibility with two of the best libraries ever with the ability to play anything from 5th gen and previous.

Sorry. If I have to play only on one console, I prefer to not play at all.
Really? As a gamer you'd choose not to play anything at all?
As a gamer, I refuse to let someone else to dictate to me what I can not play.

I'll take the PS4. Bloodborne is my favourite game ever, to the point where I actually got the Hunter's Mark as my first ever tattoo.

Might as well not bother playing games then.

Nah, PC is where it's at.
Both PC and console have near identical libraries now...
Sadly, yes. To the detriment of PC games...

Could possibly chose the NES 8-bit for nostalgia.
Not that it will be used all that often. Once a blue moon maybe.
More books will be read.

Nah, PC is where it's at.
I understand PC has to be off the table for discussion... its obviously the best choice and there would be no reason for the question to even be asked.

As far as console... it would have to be a Nintendo product. As it would need to last the rest of my life that rules out a PS or Xbox product as they will only last 1 to 5 years or so and then brick. Dreamcast and Genesis were pretty hearty hardware... but not enough software to entice me.

So between the nes consoles... I'll rule out WII U straight away. I'll rule out Switch and Wii as the gimmicky nature of the hardware means it would be hard to fix if it breaks. My Gamecube has held up to 15 years of off an on use, but I'd guess the laser will go bad at some point otherwise it would be an good choice...

It is a tough choice between SNES and 64, but I'd have to go with N64. I'd have Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, No Mercy, Vigilante 8, Majora's Mask, OoT... so many others. Yeah the stick wears out, but I've had decent success repairing them myself. So, N64.
Quite. PC really is the better choice. Although not as much today where the distinction has become less so, I'm afraid.

If I really were to take the question seriously. It would have to be a Nintendo console.
It would come down to NES and N64 in the end. N64 got a bit more refined games, but some janky graphics.
I'd think that the NES would stand the test of time with both hardware resilience and gamewise as well.
So, my choice still remains 8-bit NES. This time more seriously.

No-one is dictating anything to you. It's just a hypothetical question dude. It's not really going to happen. So you are saying, just purely out of stubbornness, you would stop being a gamer if you could have your pick out of any video game console ever made.

For sheer variety of games the PS2 is a strong contender, but I want a console that's built to last with games that will be etched in my mind for a lifetime.

So it's the N64 for me. All the way.

Xbox 1. Especially if I'm allowed to use backwards compatibility. But even without it, you have graphics that are close enough to the OG PS4 to enjoy as current, has so many great games from this gen and has the best controller of Gen 8. Yes, COD, for instance, looks better on PS4 than Xbox 1 but, I like the Xbox 1 controller better. That matters more for actual gaming.

PS4, given that you can now play pretty much every PS1/2/3 game on it.

I'd get a RGH Xbox 360.

That way I'd have 360 games and run emulators.

It's mainly that PC games like Divinity, Pillars, Cities, Shadow Tactics, and lots more are on consoles now that never would have before.

We are becoming slightly off-topic, so I'll just say (here) that since those game performs ..not as good.. on controllers as opposed to mouse & keyboard, they will most likely become "streamlined" and "open to" the lowest common denominator.
With all that that entails.

You do realize all those console "wars" have the anti-consumer practice of exclusivity as their foundation and we're supposed to pick which huge company screwed us over the "best" here?
As much as those conglomerates jack off over the concept, as a consumer, I would hate to have a closed system as my only choice of anything, not just gaming. It's also why I'll never touch an I-phone.

But to answer your question, the price of "company who has the most exclusives and has also been the douchiest about their properties" has to go to nintendo. By a landslide.
They truly screwed and screw us over the best.

Think you are reading too much into it. It's just a hypothetical question about which console you would pick if you could only have one. If you pick a Nintendo console, that means no more of any game that hasn't been released on their systems, so it's not a particular advantage. But that's fine if that's what you like best.

But "streamlined" is good, any game (video, board, card, etc) should be as streamlined as possible IMO. Secondly, I've played Divinity on PC with a controller (as I thought it would never come to console being very PC and Kickstarted) and I've played Shadow Tactics on PS4, neither game has sacrificed anything due to being ported to consoles nor would I say anything was really streamlined much either.

I'd never be able to game again. I've been spoiled by my PC and have more games on it right now than I've ever owned on every console I've ever had combined.

I'd probably take up hiking and four wheeling.

It's just a hypothetical question for fun. I have a PC and a PS4. I'm aware you can get more stuff on PCs but you could easily not game on one of them if you wanted. There are loads of games available for nearly every console.
