Me and a friend both bought UMvC3 on the day it came out, we both went home, played it, fought each other, etc. I played it casually because of other commitments, as where he played it a lot. Hes now really freaking good, and can pretty much annihilate me regardless of whatever team I choose. I've tried a few different things to try and improve my own abilities, but I'm still not very good. I really want to beat my friend, but I cant do it yet.

Thats why Im here, I was wondering if anyone here could offer any tips or advice? Or maybe even a good team that works well together?

My friend uses Zero, Vergil and either X-23, the hulk or dante as his third (it varies). So, usually something pretty fast thats gonna stunlock me.

Anything in particular I should do here?

Thanks.

When he's not looking change your control scheme to simple ^_^ I joke, I joke, I kid, I kid!

OT: I haven't played UMvC3 but when I used to have MvC3 my team was almost always Ryu, Deadpool and Dante, then I'd make sure all the special attacks were projectiles.

What is he doing to beat you? It sounds like he likes to rush you down, so remember that a well-timed push-block(advancing guard) can cause his last attack to whiff, allowing you to open him up and probably kill him as virgil and zero have really low health.

As far as good teams, go with characters that have easy-to-use combos and focus on opening him up. Wesker's magic series does a lot of damage and samurai edge low shot can otg. call in an assist to hold them in place as you do it (chun-li's y assist, lightning legs, is especially good for this) and you can combo it into his hyper for more damage.

Captain america is also relatively simple, his charging star plows through a lot of attacks and his magic series can be followed by a ground shield slash that otg's them and you can hyper off of it for very big damage (read: ~90% of Zero's health).

Aside from that, just keep practicing and learn to read his patterns and habits to exploit them for that one cr.L that can open them up.

Also, I don't know how he plays Zero, but if he doesn't keep his buster at level 3 charge to keep him normals safe, don't let him get away with attacking with abandon as a lot of his moves are more unsafe than they seem.

And Vergil's sword cross-up is unsafe on block, so make sure to punish him when you see that motion for the tell.

If he likes to keep going at you with constant attacks, then take advantage of characters that have zero frame hypers, like Dr. Strange's Spell of Vishanti or Hawkeye's Gimlet.

Lastly, online resources are your best friend for leveling up your game faster than your competition's.

Maximillion's "Assist Me" series is extremely informative...
...even if the comedy is a little hit and miss. Good stuff starts at 2 minutes 57 seconds.

Shoryuken.com is always nice for getting information on the game, be it the characters themselves [http://wiki.shoryuken.com/Ultimate_Marvel_vs_Capcom_3] or brushing up on the game's mechanics [http://wiki.shoryuken.com/Marvel_vs_Capcom_3/System_Guide]. It is a very valuable resource.

Lastly, GameFAQS has some good info because of the general skill level of the players there. Of course, it is GameFAQS so that means an elitist community more often than not, so I'd recommend just lurking/searching topics for relevant information. I haven't had much experience with Shoryuken.com's forums, but I've heard they are quite helpful as well for finding good tech for your character and general advice if you search through.

Zero , virgil and x-23?

Well if you ask me , the most dangerous character is x-23 . Virgil is as predictable as a clock , play one match against him and wath was he does , more than likely he would do the same thing over and over . Down block is your best friend . Sure there are some overhead attacks but not many ( compared to say SSF4).

When i see that team the first thing i think is you need a keep away character , i would suggest morrigan ( shes my favorire chacter on my team ) her astral vision is deadly. And she is very versatile or trish. Next you would need a good damage dealer , i suggest spencer or captain ameica both are very versatile an can do quite some damage with decent OTG movez that can keep combos going . Next you need an proper assist , sentinrls assist are great , so is doctor dooms or even hulks gamma wave or nemisis -T.

What ever you do DO NOT ROLL virgil/dante/ wesker or Nova .... Because i hate seeing those teams xD. Good luck and practice.

I would also suggest , go into mission mode , and go up to 6 . Take what you learned up to that point with your character and put a your oen personal spin on it .

One last thing , have fun, the game is about having fun , don't take it too seriously .

It's tough to really offer specialized advice without knowing what your friend actually does and just how skilled he is. If he's just a rushdown artist without a lot of depth to his game beyond the offensive pressure, pushblocking can do a lot. Against a more advanced rushdown player, you will have two basic options in UMvC3: play a zoning game (zoning well can be extremely effective in UMvC3) or rush him down harder and don't let him establish his pressure game. In some other fighters, just playing good defense will stop rushdown cold, but in the VS series there's just too many options and too much speed to never get opened up at all. Now, if he's really good then you're in trouble. Zero is considered one of the best in the game right now and a well played Zero, even without any help, can decimate anyone. If that's the case, your best bet might be to try and force a snap in on Zero and then catch him with a mixup as he flies in. Zero is a wimp health wise so it should only take him one wrong choice and Zero will be toast.

As for characters, it's really up to who you want to play. Try not to pick a character just because someone tells you that they will do well against your friends team. Instead, pick someone you like and enjoy to play. So far, the cast of UMvC3 seems fairly well balanced and because of the team aspect of the game almost any character can be made to work with the right teammates. If you actually like what you;re playing and aren't just totally focused on beating your friend, your overall level of play will be more likely to level up.

fed up of this now. I've watched a load of videos, read up on button combo's and character information but its no good. As soon as the game begins, he rushes me, stunlocks me and thats pretty much it. No matter what i do, i cant break out, i just have to watch my characters die. This isnt fun for anyone.

Don't watch videos of combos and stuff like that. At best it will depress you and make you think you skills level is extremely low .

Do you remember what his first move was with his first character? Do you block ?( like i said in my first post ) down block is your best friend. Have you played mission mode at all? Do you have characters that yOu main? Do you go in training mode to practice your combos? Can you beat thr cpu in normal difficulty?

Don't expect to be good right off the bat.

This is a really tough game against someone that knows how to play the offensive system to his advantage. My advice would be to get some sparring partners who aren't as good as him that you can relatively go 5o/50 with. The competition is fun, but if you can't get a move in edgewise, not only will you not learn anything, it will just be a frustrating experience. Try to find some people that are around your skill level (GameFAQS has a beginners lobby topic as well IIRC, useful because if your experiences anything like mine, the online competition ranges from lag-tactics to fighting game Gods) and just play casuals until you can get to around your friend's level, or ask your friend to use characters he's not as good with to give you a chance. If he's not a douche, he'll understand that you're at a point he was at not too long ago.

So i suppose going Phoenix Wright is out of the question until you learn how to play keepaway? Seriously a Turnabout Mode + X Factor Phoenix Wright does unholy amounts of damage per hit.

You just need to learn when it's safe to go evidence hunting...

Now onto helpful stuff, X-23 has a ton of charge attacks that can be chained into combos, the downside is that projectiles stop charges easily, so get Morrigan or someone with a beam attack to help.

Zero has an air dash that can cross you up,the nippy bastard. Advancing Guard is your friend against Vergil's little sword combo and his launcher opens him up if it misses.

If all fails, go Wesker... But i will not respect you if you do.

My team is Phoenix Wright, Amaterasu and X-23... As a side note, can anyone think of a name for the team? I've tried but a wolf god, a lawyer and a clone is really hard to sum up into one word.
