I pre-ordered and purchased the collectors edition of MvC3. And honestly, I'm not really upset by Ultimate's existence. Sure, I might of liked to not have a new version of the game quite as soon, but I don't feel that ripped off.
The cost of the characters alone would be $60 if it were released as DLC. Throw in the extra modes, features, and character balance and it seems like a steal.
I mean, I could ***** and moan about how people new into the game will have paid 70 bucks less than I have in the long run. But MvC3 was still a good game. I easily got my money's worth out of the game. Ultimate coming out later this year doesn't somehow invalidate the fun I had months ago with the game. Further, those that buy the game in November don't have a version of the game that can be played now. I do.
And so what if us early-adopters are in a sense beta testers? All that means is that the balance is going to be all the better in Ultimate. All the things that people have complained about in MvC3 have a chance to be fixed and balanced - we already know we'll be getting spectator mode, for instance. Say what you will about how "evil" Capcom is, they tend to make good fighting games and Ultimate only benefits from Vanilla MvC3 being released earlier.
As for the roster, I'm excited for pretty much the entire Capcom side. The Marvel side, I'll admit, I'm not overly familiar with the characters. But I look forward to learning about them. Would I have liked to see some more familiar faces like Gambit? You bet! But from what my comic-obsessed friend tells me, Gambit isn't at all relevant in today's Marvel comics. I understand wanting to put in newer characters over those that just aren't important anymore. I'm not mad at them for that.
The way Capcom is handling this game is a bit shady, I'll admit. I can fully understand why some people are upset. But of all the things Capcom has done to upset their fans lately, I don't think this is all that bad. I look forward to Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.
