Eh. I'm perfectly fine with it, but then again, I've been diagnosed with some sort of "mild Asperger's"

I didn't know there was such a thing, but I guess so.

I don't understand why doctors say that because I'm not overly obsessed with anything and I just don't like most people rather than socially awkward.
Because doctors have huge egos and want to be able to label everything, rather than admitting that there's no problem. It makes them look better.

I'm sure you'll be fine. A lot of people these days have some type of disorder or another. But if you're really worried about it there's behavioral modification classes or social skill training that will help.

This is one of those conditions that's become all the rage to diagnose people with in the last few years.

Empathy in humans came about because it encourages cooperative group behaviour, as such the ability to understand those in your group and what motivates them is an asset, a group of a dozen is more likely to survive then a single man in a harsh winter, people without empathy tended to die off because they couldn't function inside a group without acting like, what we'd call today, assholes, putting themselves first, stealing, etc.

Aspergers Syndrome on the other hand, depending on the severity of your condition, isn't a lack of empathy (that is the ability to see the impact of actions on another as if it was happening to you), it mealy makes it harder to understand the emotions of others through non-verbal cues, it doesn't make you evil, it just means you have to work harder to understand things that other people take for granted, unless you have the most extreme version of the condition, it can be moderated with effort, I worked with a man with a moderate version of the condition for several years, at first it was hard to understand some of the things he did, but with effort on both our parts we became good friends.

Just don't get a job dealing with customer service and you'll be fine. Hell I'd recommend that to everyone, customer service sucks.

I have Asperger's too. There is no cure or really treatment for it, so there is no reason to bother getting worked up about it. It's not something that really destroys a person's life. It makes certain things harder to do (socializing, make friends) but it also makes other things easier (most people tend to excel and be driven in a particular field of interest). In fact, Einstein and Newton were both believed to have Asperger's because of there single minded determination that made them great and a lack of socializing and getting along with society. On top of that, Its entirely possible to train yourself to act more "normal". Just because you may act one way naturally doesn't mean that you have to follow your impulses. I'm not saying it'll be easy or quick but you can train yourself to act more "normal". Of course no one is really "normal" all of us have quarks and weirdness and Asperger's is just one type of weirdness. Just go with it and be happy. The grass may seem greener on the other side, but it really isn't.

i have been told all my life that i was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of four. I just read an article saying that It causes lack of empathy for humans and difficulty in understanding nonverbal cues. I have realized that i do both of these things, and im wondering if i should be worried. do you think so? i really want to stop, and i just figured out why it is so hard to.
No, for Asperger's Syndrome is as fake as can be. THe truth is you have gained or are in some way a Nerd. Nerds: Who they are and why we need more of them by David Anderegg is something to look into.
Try saying that to my mum's friend. She has a now 12 year old Asperger's son, and I respect her ability to put up with him. He has special classes with flash cards to show him what each facial expression means, and he ignores everyone else's feelings just to entertain himself. At people's birthday parties he just whips out his DS and ignores everyone else. And his mum has to deal with that every day of her life, with no thanks from the kid, emotional or literal. It's not his fault, it's just the way his brain is wired.

So next time you're about to shoot your mouth off with bullshit and an uneducated opinion, how about you actually think about what you're about to say, mmk?

Am i only only one who read the topic title and expected to see "I accidentally 93Mb of .jpg files. What should I do"?
No.

OT: Don't you worry too much. If you try to live "normally", whatever that means, and don't try too hard, you should be fine.

So apparently, Asperger makes people like Replicants from Blade Runner? That doesn't seem right. I've known a person with Asperger, and although it took a little while for some words to sink in, he was fine.

If you end up more of the nicest life form in the universe side of the spectrum as opposed to Jack the Ripper, then you'll be fine.

Urgh. So many people coming out of the woodwork, claiming to have some kind of aspergers. "Mild aspergers" gets me the most. What the hell do you mean by "mild"? Does that mean you are slightly lacking empathy? Surely that means, you are just a person who slightly lacks empathy, rather than someone who actually has a real condition.

Man I hate it when people read about psychological conditions online. Just because you appear to reflect some of the symptoms of a condition, it does not mean you actually have a problem. They call this parsimony in the medical world: one should, for practical reasons, make the least assumptions possible when it comes to a diagnosis. Ergo, if you find that you are often tired, it is less likely that you have M.E and more likely that you are just plain lazy. If you tend not to emote, it is less likely that you have autism and more likely that you are just an indifferent kind of person. These people who diagnose themselves, they're taking away the credibility of people who have genuine mental problems.

i was diagnosed at the age of four. i just never asked my parents what it meant.

I have Asperger's syndrome too. It's really not as big a deal as neuro-typicals (what I call non autistic people) make it out to be. While it's true that the conditions you mentioned are present in people with Autism, that's no reason to believe that you have to stay that way. I have recieved all sorts of help since I was at least 5 (I'm 20 now), including group therapy, social skills group, medication, TSS, and mobile therapy. While I still don't get body language or sarcasm (huge drawback, that one) I've come a long way from the hilariously shy anti-social kid that I used to be. If you work, you can get better in the departments we are lacking in. Hang in there, and no matter what anyone says, being Autistic is not a bad thing.

Hans Christian Anderson, Lewis Carroll, Charles Darwin, Emily Dickenson, Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, Michelangelo, Mozart, Issac Newton, George Orwell, Johnathon Swift, Nikola Tesla
Asberger's is named after a friend of einsteins.
More specifically, it's named after the person who first studied it: Hans Asperger. I'm not sure if they knew each other, seeing as Asperger lived his whole life in Austria, and Einstein lived in Germany then moved to the US. But it's possible they might have.

I live rather happily with OCD, so you should be quite fine. Unless my light switches are facing different directions. Then I'll disembowell the perpetrator, use their bones to make a gallows, and hang 'em with their own intestines.
