Un-achievable Achievements?

Across my time with the 360 there have been several achievements I have tried to go for but have been unable to obtain even though I did what was required. For example there are 2 achievements in Driver San Francisco which I can't get. There's the one for driving down Lombard Street while staying above 20mph and not hitting anything. I tried that over and over, flawlessly managing it at least a dozen times, yet the game won't give me the achievement for it. There's also one for escaping from the police while driving a truck. I also performed this several times with nothing to show for it. Also a very long time ago I managed to finish The Darkness on hard difficulty without getting anything to show for it. Now I'm no achievement whore, I've only got 100% on 2 games out of my library, both of which aren't hard to get (Oblivion and NFS MW), but I feel really cheated when I do something for which I'm promised a reward which I never get. Has anyone else had experiences like this? Or am I being an idiot and missing something I'm doing blatantly wrong on those particular achievements?

Sometimes achievements glitch and don't unlock when they should.Happened to me with the "Blight Queller"(Kill 1000 Darkspawn)achievement in Dragon Age:Origins.I've beaten the game multiple times and killed thousands of the buggers but it never unlocked.

I'd suggest looking up those particular achievements and seeing if they're known to be buggy and seeing if there's a fix(such as clearing your cache and playing off line).I'll probably get around to doing this myself for Origins sometime as it's the last achievement I need for the full 1750g

Sometimes they're inaccurate, too. I think Viking had several. It also had one that glitched on me, but it seems to not want to give up achievements even if you DO them right.

It's amazing when an achievement tells you what to do, you do it, get nothing, then go online and find you were supposed to do something different.

It's the nature of the beast, my friend. Cheevos are a great meta-game, but ambiguously-worded requirements and the occasional glitch are a price we have to be willing to pay. Fortunately, those tend to be the exception and not the rule.

I'd offer that, especially if you're not an achievement whore like me, before you set off investing the time into a particularly taxing achievement or if you're finding one not unlocking when it should, read up about it online for potential glitches (there are any number of boards with people moaning about achievements not unlocking with just as many offering why) and clarification, i.e.: can it be done on a lower difficulty, can it be done across several playthroughs, etc. Most recently, I completed Deus Ex: Human Revolution without setting off any alarms... or so I thought. The achievement reads (roughly) "complete Deus Ex without setting off any alarms." Sounded straightforward enough as throughout the entire game, you'll encounter dozens of alarm panels and security cameras that trigger obvious "alarms." So, I beat the game without setting of any of those off, but no achievement. I read online and evidently, there's ONE spot in the game that pit me against two security robots that, while no "alarms" or klaxons were triggered, their detecting me during combat evidently counted against the achievement and I failed to get it. Gladly, DE was good enough to merit another playthrough, so I was extra careful the second time through and it popped at the end!

I got all achievements for Dragon Age: Origins and I found out that one of the patch's glitched the kill counter for the Blight Queller and other Darkspawn killing achievements. The only way around it was to clear the system's cache (Xbox 360) which deleted all patches and then I repeatedly played and reloaded the Eleven Alienage part of the final mission where you supposedly kill the most Darkspawn in a short amount of time. Wasn't too hard, just long and annoying, especially when I had to reapply patches to all my games.

OT: Vincible: Defeat Crawmmerax The Invincible (Borderlands). Doing this one legit and by yourself is almost impossible, though luckily me and three friends managed it in an hour with the right elemental weapons.

the 2 i've found are with Condemned: Criminal Origins and CoD 4, both involving collectibles, I've gone through and found all on both, in condemned you need all the collectibles to unlock a secret document, which I have, and CoD 4 clearly says 30/30 Intel, but nothing on either, Just remembered a 3rd, also collectible, gold bricks in lego star wars, got them all, no achievement

Oh, I thought this was talking about insanely hard to complete Achievements. Never mind.
Personally, I don't have a 360 (PS3 here), but I've never had this issue. None of my 360 playing friends have ever complained about it either. Then again, I'm not much of an achievement/trophy collector. I get what I can and MIGHT try for some interesting ones from time to time. That's about it.

OMG, don't get me started on Borderlands!! I've got one achievement left for the full 1750, and I'm going to burn that game in effigy!! Gearbox should be flogged for some of the most ridiculous, time-consuming and outright HARD achievements to grace the 360/PS3!! What about "What A Party!", collect x-amount of fish-in-a-bag, panties and pizzas? Those items are each EXTREMELY rare, RANDOM item drops from ONE enemy type! There's NO WAY anyone in their right mind would grind that out without cheating and "farming." Or the Moxxi DLC?? Seriously, 20 rounds of 5 waves of enemies with increasing difficulty? It takes even the best gamer HOURS to get through all those and if you and your team all die, you have to START OVER from the beginning?!? WTF?!? I'm getting pissed all over again and I already GOT those damn achievements!

Sorry, sorry.... *woo-sah, woo-sah*

OT: Fuck Borderlands.

Yea, about half of the achievements for Mercenaries 2 are multiplayer. EA, with their infinite wisdom, shut down the mutiplayer just as I bought the game. So not only can I not get those achievements, I cant even play co-op with anyone.

Just another reason I dont buy EA products.

If they came to hear me beg...
I just can't jump of a cliff and perform an assasination on an elite to survive a fall that normally would have killed me in halo reach.

Crawmerax wasn't that hard. It's a case of MASSIVE DAMAGE WEAKSPOT sniping, with a reasonably good weapon. And mainlining health packs. Seriously, it's actually reasonably easy as the Soldier, even without proper weapons. Actually, if you do the Zombie Island DLC pack first, get both the Hellfire and the Inferno, preferably decent versions of them, and go nuts on the glowy spaces.

The people who find it "impossible" are the ones who charge in headfirst, thinking that because it got them through the rest of the game, that it'd work for the one Bonus Boss that you only get after the end credits of the DLC pack, and that you STILL have to do a chain of quests to unlock.

Oh, and don't complete the main game before attempting Crawmerax. Both the end of the main story, and killing Crawmerax will scale the rest of the game. That, and killing Meat Popsicle will as well, if you're on the PC version.

Achievements being completely worthless to begin with, along with how they negatively impact gaming in general is pretty much the reason I have to respond to this with a shrug and a yawn.
How have the negatively affected gaming? Either you go for them and enjoy them as a game within the game (like me,) or you disregard them and just play the game (like you.) Achievements have no bearing on the way a game itself is played. If you're talking about how people who take them too seriously affect your gaming experiences, I'd have to respond with the cliche: "Guns don't kill people; people kill people." I will concede, however, that multiplayer can be adversely affected by idiots going for an achievement and affecting the match with their idiocy, but the closest I'll come to faulting the achievements would be to blame the developers who should NEVER tie achievements to specific types of performance within the multiplayer environment. Cumulative achievements or skill-based achievements are fine as they are earned by playing the game the way it was meant to be played, but ones like "be on the winning team without ever firing a shot" or "win a match using only melee attacks" and stupid shit like that, yeah, that's just asking for system misuse and bad times...

Haha! Yeah, I'm with you there; I think a "God Mode" should be an unlockable bonus in a lot of today's games: Prototype with infinte health and energy would be a BLAST!!

In a way, Saints Row 3 does actually do that, what with you being able to unlock zero bullet damage.

How about mother fucking Little Rocket Man? The most annoying goddamn escort mission ever. At least Gnome Chompsky got his own game out of it.

Try some of the special award trophies for Killzone 2, which consist of being in the top 10, 5, 3 and 1% of players of that week. It's ridiculous.

You think that's bad? Remember GoW 2? Seriously 2.0? One of the easiest achievements in the game but the most time consuming one ever; 100 000 enemies. 'nuff said
