How about mother fucking Little Rocket Man? The most annoying goddamn escort mission ever. At least Gnome Chompsky got his own game out of it.
I wish Valve would make that game. I took me two or three tries to get that achievement. The first time I lost him after you run into the giant maggot thing are being chased by the chopper and have to turn and was very sad. The achievements that I think are impossible in that game are Get Some Grub(I always come out of there having killed all but two or three of those things) and Neighborhood Watch. Other achievements that are impossible to get are pretty much every non-story related achievement in Chromehounds. I will forever be disappointed in SEGA for shutting down the servers on that game.
Ugh, Neighborhood Watch... two attempts and I gave up on that one. Between One Free Bullet, Little Rocket Man and the one someone else mentioned about staying off the sand, I didn't have the patience to spare!
best advice for Little Rocket Man, Keep Off the Sand, and One Free bullet is to save a lot. Watching a "how to" video also helps, but I highly suggest saving often.

You know what's even worse? I did it! I took that little bastard gnome all the way there, put him in the rocket, and didn't get the achievement. I waited for the credits to end just in case.

Boy was I pissed.

Seriously ...

Kill 10,000 people in versus ranked match total

Nobody has mentioned this infamous achievement from the first Gears of War yet?

It's probably the single-most time-consuming achievement there is, to recent memory.

About 50% of the achievements on Rogue Warrior are obtained playing online multiplayer. 50% of the achievements are therefore unattainable due to the fact that no one else plays that horrible, horrible game. Really, it's just, terrible....

Several in the Halo games.

1) The vidmaster achievements with four people. FUCK that! Even if I get lucky enough to have three friends online at the same time, they either don't want to play Halo, or one of them already has the achievement.

2) Mother fucking Save This Film in Halo 3. I have gotten perfections. I have almost all the Halo 3 achievements. I played 100+ games trying to get a Perfection on the right map. Never did it, never will. (For those who don't know, Save This Film requires you to get at least 15 kills with no deaths in a Slayer game on certain maps.)
I once had a game with my friend in splitscreen where everyone lagged out except for me and my friend, so I farmed "Save This Film" I feel guilty about it now, this was when I was 14, I don't farm achievements anymore.
And the Vidmaster challenges are frustrating I remember spending weeks with my friend trying to find two more people to do it with us, only for him to do it without me while I was gone one day.
I would LOVE to farm that achievement!

I had a pretty terrible experience with the ODST vidmaster for the one where you have to do the last level, on legendary, with four people, without Warthog of Tank. We got the infinite rockets and spent about 6 hours getting through this(We had some really shitty players.) We were heading for the final dropship...... When my connection dropped.

So much rage...
This whole discussion is making me sad that I can't get into Live because I have to accept the stupid new terms of use, my account was registered when I was 14 so I have to have parental approval, and my password is apparently "not valid". Why, Microsoft? Why?

Oh no dude, it's one special day in every month of the year. Go to his cell and next to it is a calendar with certain dates circled, and those are the days you would've had to speak to him in 2011, so you need to cross over to the appropriate days in 2012. So fucking long man. The real way to get it is to fuck around with the date settings on the xbox, disconnect the box itself from the internet, speak to him on what xbox thinks is that day, then save, rinse and repeat...

I may have gotten the thread a little schewed, cause it's really quite achievable, it's just a dumb fucking achievement to have included in an otherwise pretty damn flawless game...
Really? I thought I looked at his little wall calendar and thought I noted it was all the holidays.... Hmmm. Well, I'll go for it anyway.

EDIT: I'll go for it legitimately. I figured there'd be a way to mess with the date/time settings to trick it, but that'll take the fun out of having it.

Perhaps I was wrong in saying I was an achievement "whore;" more of an "enthusiast" really. I don't play games JUST for the gamerscore; I don't play bs games just to inflate my number (ie: I haven't played Avatar,) but I do like getting as many points as possible from the games I DO play. I really enjoyed Arkham City and will not take issue popping it in for a couple of minutes every month. At the end of the day (or YEAR in this case,) it'll be an interesting achievement to bag, but I'll concur it sucks for those who don't typically keep games bafter beating them to replay them often.

Yeah, I got all three of those and saving every four feet was a must. Worst parts for Little Rocket Man were the car sequences; ValvE's epic physics engive would NOT let that little bastard stay wedged in the back window, so I had to get out and re-wedge him every couple of seconds.

I just can't jump of a cliff and perform an assasination on an elite to survive a fall that normally would have killed me in halo reach.
Oh yes you can. Load up The Pillar of Autumn and spend a happy afternoon leaping off the starting cliff onto the Elite below. Use Youtube videos if it helps. Also remember that although running before you jump is probably a good idea, the run button must not be held while you're attempting the assassination.

Halo Reach does have more than its fair share of bullshit unachievable achievements, though. Map-specific achievements for gametypes that never appear on aforementioned maps? Check. 343i is having a great time trolling the Reach community.

Any of the online ones from any of the Smackdown Vs Raw games. If there's anyone online at all, odds are they're a hacker. If they aren't a hacker, they disconnect before losing. If they don't disconnect, they're too good/spam unblockable moves.

Actually, make that any "Defeat X People" online ones. Australian Internet makes them ...interesting. How can you shoot someone who's two or more seconds ahead of you?

To be honest that achievement pales next to the "Seriously" achievements in Gears 2 & 3

Gears 2 - Seriously 2.0 Kill 100,000 enemies

Gears 3 - Seriously 3.0 Reach level 100 and unlock all onyx medals. For a list of what it takes to unlock all the onyx medals have a look here http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=330268

Achievements in multiplayer very often negatively impact the game for those who're not aiming for them but instead are trying to actually achieve something meaningful... like winning.

Well for me its basically every Platinum trophy for every game I own on PS3.

Mainly because alot of games have online achievements and I don't like playing online. I prefer single player games on console. I especially dislike co-op trophies. I hate playing with other people because most of the time you have to wait for them to catch up or perform a mundane task that takes way too long and is ultimately pointless.

Example, playing Resident Evil 5 with the unlimited ammo cheat on for pretty much all weapons, yet my co-op partner kept wasting time picking up ammo and getting himself killed trying to do so. I ended up just turning the PS3 off.

So, in short, Trophies that require online, because I don't play nicely with others.

If I recall, the one in Gears 2 wasn't THAT bad. You just had to replay the Brumak ride a few(?) times (didn't bother myself though).

Not that bad?I beat the campaign 3 times and put probably over a hundred hours into the multiplayer and horde modes and I was nowhere near 100,000 kills.Last time I checked I had around 30,000.

A buddy of mine got the achievement by doing the Brumak bit you mentioned and he said it took him around 15 hours of just grinding that section over and over to unlock it

Two of the ones in Fallout 3 Expansion packs (Mothership Zeta and The Pitt) - collecting all the alien prisoner records and picking up 100 steel ingots. Can't find all of them, and any walkthroughs just give ambiguous 'it's in this general area' directions for them.
Finding all the ingots can be tricky, but I've done it two or three times. Finding all the prisoner records, however, I've only tried that once and missed about half of them. Hell, next time I try playing either of the recent Fallout game I'm going to have to have a computer next to me so I can refer to the Fallout wiki every two seconds just to make sure I've not missed something.

I'll be honest, I seriously expected the Gears 3 Seriously achievement to be 500,000 or even 1,000,000 kills. What they chose for it is just as hard though. I might go after Seriously 2.0 at some point (I'm already over a fifth of the way there), but I say screw it to the first one. There is no way you can make me sit through BS match after match (if you can find one that is) in order to get that achievement.

Keep Off the Sand (or whatever the hell it's called) - Don't step on the sand in that one level in Half Life 2 (I spent and over an hour on that level, being really careful to not step on the sand, and I was pissed when I didn't get my achievement)

Easiest achievement to glitch past.

Surf the sand using a door and the gravity gun.

Step 1:
Stand on door

Step 2:
Pull door to self

Step 3:
Face opposite direction to where you want to go

Step 4:
Adjust direction you are facing

Step 5:
Win game
