I enjoyed it, but I wish they hadn't watered down the Unchartedness.

I mean, we got an Uncharted game that finally wasn't held back by the PS3 hardware and they decided it should be this one to be the realistic one. There's a lot less action and setpieces (although what we got was amazing, the jeep/motorcycle chase was badass). I suppose we have Last of Us to thank for that.

I also did not enjoy that there were a lot less forced combat encounters. I am a person who always resorts to stealth when it is available, I have to force myself to break cover and cause some chaos to enjoy UC4's massively improved gunplay. Optional stealth always ruins games for me.

We already know that there are more Uncharted games coming out (hopefully without Drake), so I hope they remember that the Uncharted universe is about smug assholes surviving jumping of cliffs by surfing on car doors.

But you just know they're going to try and bring Drake back at some point. His daughter gets kidnapped and 52-year-old Nathan gets back into the game again. Or they decide that he found time to shoot a few hundred more people during that photo montage you see in the UC4 epilogue.
Oh come on, you know they're going to pass the torch on to his daughter once she like reaches her twenties or something. Then Drake'll probably take the spot of Sully or something.

The stealth system in Uncharted 4 made me really happy.
I wasn't too big a fan of the stealth grass though. It kinda promotes lazy level design, and it's too easy having these big patches of invisibility for you to hide in with zero drawback. I really hope this doesn't make it's way into The Last of Us 2.

I pretty much agree completely. Working Drake and Elena were fine for me because their interactions are by far the most interesting whether they're adventuring or eating dinner. That's the main problem with Uncharted 4 is that they're barely together. When Elena joins the adventure, the game starts feeling like Uncharted again. I couldn't care less about Sam and Drake and all the freaking climbing and rope swinging. And, the icing on the cake that was revealed later was one of those boring ass chapters never even happened but I had to play through that shit.
I feel there are moments where Sam and Drake's relationship brush with being interesting, but they never really allow those moments to play out.

And on the one hand I like the relationship conflict between Drake and Elena, since it does result in the best moment in the game...

Elena's fake death.

It's also the best we've seen their relationship and their conflict depicted in the franchise. But on the other, this is the third time we're seeing them do this song and dance, with Drake getting into trouble and Elena berating him for it. How nice would it have been if Elena was there as your trusted partner just like Sully?

I wouldn't be so sure.

I can totally see some executive at Sony running a focus group and deciding that Drake is the key element to the success of the series (which may be correct, I dunno) and demanding that he receive the Master Chief treatment.

Depends how that upcoming spin-off thing is received. If it doesn't go down well then I expect them to run straight back to Drake.

You sit, talk to your wife or whatever while eating salads or something, play old video games, then file some taxes.

How the fuck people think this is a good -game- series is beyond me.

That's an awesomely well-rounded critique. Bravo!

Seriously though, you surely can't be serious. This mindset could be applied to any game to make it sound terrible.

And The Shining is just a boring job interview if you walk out in the first 10 minutes. The guy sits, talks to his boss or whatever while making small talk or something, he drives up to his new job, then checks out the fridge.

How the fuck people think this is a good -horror- movie is beyond me.
But the thing is, Uncharted is supposed to be a video game. The Shinning is a movie. If the Shinning was sold to me as a game, Id be pretty pissed.
Half life's first 10 minutes was a tram ride, followed by another 5 or so minutes walking to work and possibly fucking off a bit. It was a nice way to get settled in before shit got real, and gave a general feel for Black Mesa before everything was on fire and crawling with aliens.

I haven't played UC4 yet but I've played the first 3, so generally know what to expect.
That intro is what prevents me from ever starting over in HL1. Once is enough.

I have yet to see Mario, Link, or Lu Bu file taxes. And if they did, it would probably not be fun.

I was late to the series in general. Beat all four of them for the first time over the last month and a half or so. All of them were fantastic experiences and games I can easily go back to when I feel like it just to play them again. I love the characters and settings a whole lot. As for 4, it is my favorite one of the group and I think the best one of the group. Best way to end Drake's story.

I'd watch Nate and Elena file taxes all day if any of these were the alternatives -

See what I did there?

See what I did there?
See, fun gameplay is between all those cutscenes. And 15 minutes for all of Lubu's cutscenes? Most missions last more than 10 minutes, so the ratio is likely much better and more worth it.

I am not against cutscenes. I am against games that are more movie than game, have shitty gameplay and have shitty characters who we waste time watching them file fucking taxes.

^There are plenty of people who already think UC is full of fun gameplay, especially 4 in many cases. The point is entirely subjective and nothing to get so irrationally distraught over.

1. Quote me. Im more likely to see it. 2. People didnt like my negative opinion. That is not me getting irrationally distraught over. People liking a game I find boring garbage wont keep me up at night, nor will it exasperate my depression. It will annoy me everytime people praise the game, but there are more pressing issues in life that do actually bother me, and very few of them relate to video games at all. I will still play and enjoy DW9 when it comes out, and I will not waste my time and money on anything from Naughty Dog cause other than Jak and Daxter, they have only made games I find boring and bad.

I don't know, I think Sony knows they need to keep the goose happy, and if Naughty Dog wants to shift focus with Uncharted (should it ever continue) to another character, I think they have more than enough leighway to do so. If this was Sony's movie division I'd argee, but their gaming division seems to be handling its artists with a lot more care.

And the way 4 ended they'd need to jump through some odd hoops in order to get Drake back in action.

So, it's been out since last May, and I've only just started playing it. And it's even better than the first three (in my opinion). Anyone else arrived late to this?

If anyone's interested here's my first 45 mins or so in the game:)

I too am late to the party, I don't have a PS4 but I finally played the first few chapters at a friend's house and I was blown away.

That whole sequence where Drake starts in his attic and looks at all his tokens from the previous game, and then goes down to have dinner with his wife was amazing. Those characters felt so real, it was a blast to just walk through and experience that. Plus the way Drake and Elena interacted as a couple just felt so genuine to me, it really made me care for them.
And it made it a lot more meaningful when Drake lies to Elena later on, because you know what their relationship is like, and you know what Drake is fucking up.
Also you get to play as Drake playing Crash Bandicoot on a Playstation, which is awesome

Naughty Dog are just so damn good at filling their games with memorable moments

I haven't even started the party yet. I got the UC4 and PS4 combo for X-mas. So I picked up the remastered trilogy so I can play them in order. And I just beat the first one last night. And now Horizon is in my PS4 so it may be a while yet

So they just give the IP to another studio. I didn't pick that Master Chief example at random.

Nah, just have his daughter get kidnapped or make it a semi-prequel set after UC4 but before the epilogue.

I mean, they already pulled a long-lost brother out of their arses in the fourth game.

Maybe, or maybe we will finally get that Uncharted cart racing game.

I thought it was a nice closure to the series, and it was a good continuation of the gameplay that the series has down to perfection.

My only complaint is that it was missing something that the other three games had. I won't spoil it, since you have just started the game, but when the end came around and what I was looking for still hadn't shown up, I can't help but feel that the story dropped the ball a little bit.

Everyone had their suspicions that Kratos would be back in some form, and they apppeared to have pullled off the reveal at least, but I don't see them bringing back Nathan Drake in any playable form. If they had his daughter grow up to take his place, then it would be too similar to Tomb Raider. Some series just need to end. ND wrote it to wash their hands of it, and they still have The Last of Us anyways. Sony generally has good relationships with their developers, and a part of that is due to not shamelessly tainting their IPs.

I'm not sure if I entirely gave Sam a fair shake to be honest. I didn't care for how shoehorned in he was, plus he just wasn't that interesting. Drake and Flynn had better dynamics. Sam, to me, was just stealing screen time from pretty much every other and better character from Elena to Sully to Chloe and Nadine to even Rafe. Plus, Sam's the reason we had to have both backstory chapters and young Drake chapters that slow down the pacing even more considering the game's adventure itself is probably the slowest in the series as well.

I wouldn't even count Uncharted 3 as cannon even if I was a big Uncharted fan. The narrative is so bad on so many levels. The game seemed to want to have Drake develop and learn life lessons but the ending totally just returned the characters to status quo. The 3rd game did nothing but trudge through the same exact beats like Drake and Elena breaking up yet again so you can have conflict in the middle and them back together for that standard Uncharted ending. Then, characters like Sully are totally inconsistent from the previous game going from "I'm too old for this shit" so I'm backing out to Sully following Drake anywhere no matter how dangerous and really stupid it was. Then, the villain's henchman has like supernatural powers for a scene then nowhere to be found later. There's the dumbest plan ever by that pirate just so you have the boat chapters. Hell, I think Uncharted 3 is probably the only game where if Drake literally goes home, the villain can't win. Even, I think, literally every character tells Drake to stop at one point. How can you have a fun filled adventure when even the other characters don't wanna go adventuring with the main character?

I'm honestly curious as to what you're referring to, I've played all of the Uncharted series and I only have a guess.

Was it the supernatural twist? All of the Uncharted games pull some sort of Raiders Of The Lost Ark at the end, were you expecting Henry Avery to still be alive or something?
Not saying you're dumb if you did, I wouldn't blame you at all but I am curious.
