You make this sound hypothetical, when it's actually my plan. I'm gonna go into armed security once I hit 21, get enough experience there for a private military company to hire me, and done.

Or, if I knew for sure that there was a Far Cry 2 situation (i.e. people sitting in a bar waiting to get hired) then I'd be out there once I had the money for a gun and plane ticket.
Most PMC's ask for Military experience preferably Special forces, or Commando/Para trained soldiers or at the very least Infantry (and thats still more then most can do).

Being a security guard armed with a .38 revolver wont usually cut the mustard unless you try to get a bit of personal security detail work in.

OT: I'd think about it however if I have to fight in a warzone I'd prefer to fight for the Army or other services anything else would seem wrong to me.

In the circumstances that I had no morals, professional combat and weapons training and a fucktonne of scary-ass guns and body armour. Then I'd be a mercenary.

Hell, price isn't even a factor.

I'd rather be a bounty hunter or an assassin though. Seems like a much smaller scale. Bounty hunters get paid for capturing or killing one or two people per job. Mercenaries have entire armies as their enemies.

Besides, as the TF2 sniper says, it's constant work. "As long as there are two people left on the planet, someone's gonna want somebody dead."

Depends on the time period. Let's say it's something right around the fall of Rome. Couple of options there, the Varangian guard was hiring people from where my family would've lived at the time, that would be a good deal. Give me an axe, give me gold, bring on the wenches and mead when the fighting's done and you've got me.

Probably this. But only if I was an unrealistic mercenary, killing and boning my way through a grand adventure across the world. Not stuck protecting some ass in the middle of a freaking desert or something.

If a man gave me a gun and told me to shoot someone for a reason i disagreed with, but for huge amounts of money, i would shoot that man in the face. Money is unimportant to me.

I've been on both sides of the spectrum, that is, when i was 3-8 yrs old my mother worked 2 minimum wage($4.25 usd/hour) jobs to keep us afloat, and now she makes 70k a year on one job and is married to a man whose father owns two houses worth in excess of 4 million dollars each, and owns and runs an international business. I visit one of these mansions for several weeks each christmas.

Having seen both sides of the spectrum, i can honestly say i would rather be on the bottom than violate my personal moral code. And part of that moral code is: Anyone who offers me money to kill someone for no justifiable reason is fair game. Anyone who i would kill for money i would kill for free, because i would only kill someone i believe deserves to die.

So whether or not you accept this answer is still up to you.

I mean, I would for the monetary gain, but working FOR a privatized military corporation, I don't think I'd exactly get to choose my battles, and what if I disagree with who we're fighting or what side we're on? I can't just quit or not fight. That's the only reason I wouldn't become a mercenary, so if I still get to get paid and choose whether I want to participate in a certain conflict, then sure, I'd become a gun for hire.

If it paid reasonably well, and my contract stated I would never need to do anything. I'd have the jobtitle "mercenary" but I could just stay at home. Can't imagine any other circumstances I'd accept (apart from personality-changing brain-damage I suppose).

You pay as much as is nessacary for the situation guard duty of course costs less than overthrowing a government and my fee doubles depending on if the situation escalates, you pay for all expenses equipment damages round trip and you have yourself a deal.

To price to buy a cyanide pill or bullet to make my life as a mercenary as short as possible.

Mercenaries are perhaps the greatest scum to exist. I'd rather die.
That's a pretty misguided statement considering that are currently employed in YOUR country and help take money off of taxpayers. Besides that they allow for work that the military simply cannot do because of boundaries.

You should try to apply for the actual US army, specially if there's a chance of you getting deployed. Companies like Blackwater hire a lot of War Veterans, and private security ALSO pays better when you've had some real combat experience, so you might want to consider that.
I did, the Army and I didn't get along so well. Not going into that.

Most, but not all, so it's not a dead end. And the .38 mention's kind of a moot point, since my current supervisor used to be in armed security and he worked with his .357 magnum.

Worst case, I stay armed security, not really a big deal. But since that's several years down the road, I know I have time to look at where to go.

Now, I'm not even taking "no" as a real answer, because EVERYONE has a price. And I mean EVERYONE.

So under what circumstances would YOU become a Mercenary, I'm talking a War Mercenary, or maybe even Special Operations.

I'm guessing I'd become one if I got really good payment, and ease of going back to my "home" (wherever I live) whenever I didn't have an assignment.

How about you?
No, no they don't. My life is worth an infinite amount to me. I would never become a mercenary. Unless respawns were on.

I'd probably become a mercenary in a standard apocalypse scenario. Let's face it, what else can you do other than jerk off all day in a world full of rubble and without the internet.
