9th Company; I've never been into foreign movies with subtitles, not because they don't speak English, but because the way other cultures act in films often seems really weird to me. 9th Company was actually preety darn good; I wouldn't put it on a parr with Black Hawk Down or Saving Private Ryan, but I enjoyed it far more than films such as Rambo.

Romeo Must Die - one of the best martial arts movies I've ever seen; pretty darn good plot as well.

I think the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy is unfairly written off just because it can't stand up against the originals.
Look, the original trilogy had everything in it. Space combat stolen from WWII films, Han Solo is inspired by Westerns, even the lightsabers have a story behind them.

The prequels were a borefest of teenage angst, lightsabers are dime a dozen, and worse of all, Jar Jar Binks was in it.

Okay, I loved the CGI and the lightsaber duels were amazing, but that's hardly enough to make a film good.

Boondock Saints and Equilibrium.
Boondock Saints isn't underrated at all.

Equilibrium is awe inspiring. I even downloaded the mod "Hall of Mirrors" for Max Payne 2.

The Mist. I loved it, especially the ending (which made it one of my favorite movies), but it seems a lot of people would disagree with me from the ratings it received and what I hear from other people who've seen it.
I thought it was quite good as well. I'm always a fan of transdimensional beings killing people. Plus Starkiller from the Star Wars Force Unleashed games is in it! How awesome! cept he dies :(

The two best movies of the year for me are 'The Guard' its an absolutely hilarious irish comedy, its sort of like Snatch but more subtle. The best drama for me was Bellflower. That movie was pretty awesome. Very, very dark thematically towards the end. Plus theres a car a car that dispenses whiskey, how awesome is that.

The Kid - low budget English film about Kevin Lewis based on the book.
The Crow

this list made me chuckle. I've seen every one of these movies and i hated them all except Gattaca.

Scott Pilgrim. Everyone hates Michael Cera, so that gets in the way of all my friends enjoying - hell, even seeing - one of only two movies to give me an emotional reaction last year.
What strange world do you live in? Everyone i know loves Cera and his movies, and Scott Pilgrim is one of the biggest hits of 2010 xD.

The Iron Giant
This one is probably more accurately described as "under-seen" rather than "underrated" as it received pretty much no advertising push at all. It was created by Brad Bird and you would think that with his more recent successes of The Incredibles and Ratatouille there might have been a retrospective discovery of the film. The film is a very loose adaption of the Ted Hughes novel and is, in my opinion, the best non-CGI animated feature ever made. Such a sense of time and place (50's America) and with a great voice cast (Vin Diesel is actually good in it, though unrecognisable). It is also a film where the climax is almost guaranteed to make even a manly man cry.
"Superman", if you've seen it, you'll know what I mean.

Frailty
This is one of the most under-rated and underseen horror/thrillers I have ever seen. It should be legendary purely for the fact that it features Matthew McConaughey in a leading role and it doesn't suck. It was the directoral debut of Bill "the only guy killed by a Terminator, Alien and Predator" Paxton, and he also stars in it. Hard to tell much about it because it requires you to be unaware of the story going in but I have never shown this movie to anyone and found them unimpressed by it.

Red Cliff
Nowadays big Asian films generally do make their way over to the West and its been that way since Crouching Tiger at least. This has led to many enjoyable discoveries like Kung Fu Hustle, perhaps the most purely enjoyable movie I have ever seen. But sometimes films struggle to migrate over for various reasons. One such is Red Cliff, John Woo's return to Asian cinema. The reason is simple, he made a film over 5 hours long. As a result for Western releases it was cut to ribbons, losing over half the running time. But get the 2 disc directors/international edition and you will see a fantastic movie. In many ways as epic in scale as something like Lord of the Rings.

One film that I saw on VHS as a child and loved and still love today is "Flight of Dragons". Great opening theme song and good voice acting, including James Earl Jones and John Ritter! Done sometime in the 80s. I hope some people from the US know it because I haven't met anyone on this side of the Atlantic that does...

Really? I gave it a try on MovieBob's recommendation, and I couldn't even finish it. After you strip out the retro-gamer fanservice, it just struck me as your bog-standard slacker flick. Admittedly, I stopped right after the club fight when the first guy turned into quarters or something, but in my defense, at that point the only emotional reaction I had was an intense dislike for all of the characters. Considering the amount of movie that was left, I doubt the next scene would have been all of them dying horribly in a gas fire, so I don't think I missed anything that I would have liked.

Different strokes, I suppose...

Back on topic, though... I have to say it, may the gods forgive me. I really liked...
Super Mario Brothers.

Luigi: I read somewhere that sea turtles navigate thousands of miles on instinct!
Mario: Not in New York Traffic, they don't!
Bog standard slacker flick? XD Edgar Wright rapes face with this movie. I'm not a retro gamer but i still really enjoyed the film for its action and comedy because it was different to the usual trash you see in something shitty like the expendables or a Will Ferrell movie (Went back and watch Anchorman the other day and it had the "Epic Movie" effect on me)
Not to mention the godlike camera direction. Its good to see someone thinking about what they can do with their camera instead of just throwing it in and hoping for the best.

OT: watched Moon. Was amazing xD. Can't really think of any movies that haven't already been mentioned though....

One movie I saw that got crappy ratings was The Eagle. It was about the Romans in their English colony. Really good story line.

Most of what I was going to say has already been said but no one's mentioned one of my favourite films in recent years:

Seriously... that movie is amazing.
Fucking brutal and almost a pain to watch but amazing.

Forgot to add one to my list earlier.

Hot Rod. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and buy it. Don't bother wasting time renting, you'll just go out and buy it anyway.

The Signal

Pretty damn solid horror flick, which shows that you don't need a budget to make a brilliant movie.

Black Moon Rising

A car, going at a speed of 360 km/h, goes straight through TWO skyscrapers. What else do you want?
