The fact that someone greenlighted Patrician 4 and got Daniel Dumont (the guy who built the trading engine in the previous Patrician/Port Royale game) to be lead designer on it.

I thought the trade sim genre was dead! Long live the trade sim genre!

When I started playing Fable 2, well aware of why it was rated mature, I still got a good shock when I somehow accidentally managed to have sex and my TV started making noises o_0

Considering that the game's plot is constructed, like Frankenstein's monster, from the dismembered parts of other plots...

Personally, though, I was a bit surprised that Morrigan's mythical archetype was played that faithfully. I didn't know the writers would have the stones for it, even considering Bioware's "sex, gore, and casually vulgar conversation" approach to sticking "dark" in front of the genre du jour.

I'd say crackdown as a whole was a surprise to me, I only really bought it for the Halo 3 beta, but god damn what a game in the end.

I'd have to say it's still the first Bioshock for me, I'd say what, but I'm not for spoilers and anyone that's played it knows what I'm talking about. To me is was one of those moments of surprise similar to the end of Sixth Sense, even after I kept being told something happens half way in the game.

"It's a me, Mario!" in Assassin's Creed 2, really wasn't expecting that line, it caught me completely off-guard and I burst out laughing.

When you finish the level as Roach, expecting to be rescued after all your hard work, only to be shot, thrown in a pit, doused in petrol and then set alight.

Did NOT see that coming.

The mario line actually didn't blow my mind like the rest of you, mostly because I was contemplating why so many italians are called Mario.
