This season's masterpiece No Game No Life. My god, how can something look so gorgeous every single frame? I've seen many good looking anime over the years but No Game takes it to the next level.

The freaking COLOUR!

No, there's no way to describe how good it looks in words I've decided.

Yeah. Yeah this works.

Not to mention the story is really interesting every episode, especially the most recent one. It's almost unfair how something is so good in animation, game scenes and story

Also Mahouka is good this season, another one that oozes animation quality. It's pretty much showing off how good they can animate whenever they feel like it. The Moe is strong with this one though, might put some people off but it's worth bearing through just for Tatsuya's extreme swag. I wonder if they're setting him up for a fall though, there's no way somebody so perfect will keep curbstomping so hard through 24 episodes.

Also also Gokukoku no Brynhildr is really good this season. If you ever wondered how magic would be achieved in the real world this is your answer. Your depressing (yet hopeful enough!) bleeding from ever orifice answer.

Fuck it, everything is at least passable this season and I have never said that before.

Probably Log Horizon for me most recently. I figured it would just be another "trapped in a game" shonen, but it ended up doing some flirtatious writing with the philosophy of humanity (and what it means to be a human). Could a sufficiently complex computer AI with our same thought processes be deemed human? What's the difference?

Full metal Alchemist Brotherhood is pretty good, a lot better than the normal one. Sword Art online is okay, up until episode 14 that is. After that it takes a freaking nose dive deep into dumb fuck anime nonsense. Attack on Titan is good too. Akira is a cool movie. Outlaw Star is badass. Cowboy Beebop is good. There's a few others out there.
Quoted for truth. SAO was already beginning to suffer from Kirito being just too perfect but if they'd have just ended it at 14 it would have been alright but no... I haven't got past Episode 21 because I just know Kirito will roflstomp any problems so any interest in the anime has disappeared. Really, if you want a story that lives up to the "trapped in an MMORPG" genre just watch Log Horizon. It's less action oriented but has strong character focus and it actually feels like an MMORPG. The story would make zero sense without an MMORPG context, unlike SAO where its locations could have been copy/pasted from any generic fantasy anime ever.

Although the scene in Episode 15 when it was decent when he fights kendo with his (totally not incestuous) cousin was an interesting example of withdrawal. He fights with his awfully impractical MMORPG style over practicality one handed stance then after he loses he unconsciously tries to sheathe his sword in the back holster that simply isn't there anymore. Look, that is cool, that is interesting, it begs the question how many people would have had to undergo serious mental rehabilitation after spending two years in an MMORPG.

They drop that theme sharpish so Kirito can stop being weak and back to being a total badass because character development is for casuals. Story of SAO: drop all interesting themes for by the book anime tropes. Episodes 1-3 are still brilliant though.

The most surprisingly good anime I saw was Steins;Gate. I can't tell you why without major spoilers, but I'll tell you the whole series was okay, but it didn't get crazy and intense until about half way through. Check it out, subbed. I can't speak for the dubs, if there are any; I generally don't like how anime is dumbed down for English/american/etc audiences. Plus a certain famous line probably wouldn't come across nearly as funny in an english dub-over.

Dragonball.

It started relatively lame and I did not like it very much at first. But once things like Kamehameha and the great tournament (or how it is called) came together, it got more and more exciting.

Also an anime I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did was Npdame Cantabile - funny stuff, good music.

I guess that would be Tiger and Bunny for me.

From what I've read (a bunch of sponsor superheroes do heroes stuff to earn points and a old style hero is team up with a new cocky hero therefore a buddy cops situation) so I had low expectation of it (especially when I loathe the idea of them being selfish if they're only saving people for the points) so I started watching it, I was blown away by it by how good it was.

The characters were good and complex, interesting concept and best of all, the anime itself felt very Western like due to the setting, characters and the plot!
I was pretty much told that it was like a Japanese take on Western superheroes through the lens of a Japanese game/variety show and was sold almost immediately. Ya just gotta love those old fashioned middle-aged protagonists that just get no respect, and of course Fire Emblem.

Anyway, I was genuinely surprised by Baka to Test. On paper it sounds like just another high school slice of life comedy-romance show with a "quirky" hook to separate it from the other untold number of shows within that genre. And it kinda is. Still, the characters and hook (students get virtual avatars with attack points corresponding to their grades in certain subjects, different classes wage war on each other in the hopes of stealing/maintaining their hold on the best facilities and class rooms) were interesting enough for me to persevere through, with the main protagonist being one of the most rock stupid and simultaneously most shit upon target of a love triangle I've ever seen. And then of course there's Hideyoshi, the king of all Traps.

Hmmm. Baccano.

I went into it expecting mindless violence and came out surprised.
The whole premise and story is incredibly awesome.
It's the first anime I found so damn good I had to read the light novels.

Great choice!
Awesome characters, animation, story and has the much coveted position to me for being the best dub job for an anime EVER!

Eden of the East.

Went in, having no idea what the premise was. Was pleasantly surprised by how it went. It was interesting to see how the different characters took advantage of the exorbitant wealth granted to them, (not) all for the sake of winning the "game."
