Unintentionally Hilarious Moments in Horror Games, or Otherwise "Serious" Games

Alright, we've talked about creepy moments in "non-horror games." This time, I figured, why not the opposite? Have there ever been moments in a horror game that, instead of frightening you, merely made you want to laugh yourself silly? These can be horror games, OR otherwise serious games trying to bank certain scenes on suspense, atmosphere and tension (which means you can cite anything from Mass Effect to Final Fantasy). Instead of the intended result (i.e. sucking you in via suspense and atmosphere), it only tickled your funny bone.

Personally? While I initially liked Slender, the more I played it the more I found myself annoyed by the endless "BOOM!" that is the soundtrack. It didn't help that Slendy himself, on close inspection, looked less like a part of the game world and more like a plastic doll that was somehow inserted into a 3D environment. How can I be afraid of that?

Now, your turn.

I haven't actually played the game, of course.

Probably the entirety of Sonic '06, I suppose. It takes itself far too seriously.

Also, during the final chase sequence of Assassin's Creed III, I leaped forward right as the explosive barrel blew up, and Connor went flying off the pier and into the water. Of course I failed the sequence again and had to restart from the checkpoint, but it was absolutely hilarious to watch.

I'd say Metal Gear Solid, but I'm rather convinced that Kojima was taking the mickey as he wrote those games.

Don't really have any stories from actual horror games, the only ones I've really played are Silent Hill 2 and 3, the Dead Space franchise, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

I think we're all convinced Mr. Kojima gets higher than a rocket powered kite whenever he wants to write... anything. Take the first MGS, with some hilariously bad and hammy voice acting, awkward delivery, the inherent silliness of a black ops agent resorting to hiding in a box to avoid detection..

Not strictly what you're asking OP, but it was such a moment of relief when über-perky Vanille punched whiny-emo Hope near the beginning of Final Fantasy XIII.

Truly unintentionally funny in a horror/serious game? The terribly earnest but awkward delivery of most of the dialog in TES IV: Oblivion is hilarious. I play it just for that sometimes.

The old Resident Evil games are chock-full of this. The very first game is probably the worst of the bunch in this regard.

Unintentional hilarity?

For me that would be every time I play Dead Space and watch the game think that it is scary. How many times do you have to pull the 'dead body jumps up' gag before you realize I wasn't scared by it the first time? It's just comical.

Walking through Ron Freedman's flat in ZombiU, I came across a room full of zombies just chillin' in a room with a disco ball and rave music playing. I tried to get the attention of the zombie next to the door with my light but it kept on dancing. So I shoved it to get its attention. All it did was look at me, scream and proceed to go back to dancing.

Zombie don't give no fucks, zombie just wants ta dance.

The classic.

Oh and the hilarious dead body physics in Dead Space 1 and 2. If throwing them around or stomping them to bits wasn't enough, you can shut a door on them and they flip the fuck out. Sometimes the one that comes at you in a lift spazzes out and gets caught on the ceiling.

A Hermit's Cave
It's usually graphical glitches... well, for me at least.

The most recent one was when I was playing ACIII. During the first Leonardo's War Machines special area missions, I swam ahead and tried climbing up before the guard could open the gate. I was just about to jump-assassinate him when he gets up to open the gate, cutting to the mini-cutscene. When gameplay restarts, Ezio is stuck there, dry-humping the overhead beam with the guard below him shouting 'Oi! Get down from there!'

...

*pfff!*
