Since the new British flag Xbox 360 has been announced, people on Xbox360achievements.org have been debating over whether it is called the Union Jack, or Union Flag.

I'm British/English and honestly for all my 24 years in this country I have never ever heard it be called the Union Flag.
I know where the 'Jack' part of the name comes from (the navy) but since it has been around for a long time, it has been built into this country as the union jack. I honestly don't know a single person who calls it the union flag.

So British people, do you call it the union jack? or the union flag?
American/Rest of World people, what have you heard it called as? and what do you call it yourself?

Isn't it only called the Union Jack if it's on a ship?

Otherwise it's the Union Flag.

Just another of those little misconceptions that everybody seems to believe, then it turns out it's bollocks.

I've always just called it the Union Jack, never actually heard it being called the Union Flag until I saw the whole debate. And I'm not sure if I like that British Xbox or hate it, at some points it looks ugly as shit, at others, pretty good.

Usually I hear it called, and call it, the Union Jack. I think the jack & flag names have become synonymous with one another. I've never seen it flown from a vessel before, only the ensign flags.

The Union Jack is what it is called worldwide, and does indeed stem from an old maritime name for a Jack Flag. It can also be called the Union Flag, but this name causes more confusion with the names of other union flags.

It's the Union Flag.

But that's its official name; it can be referred to colloquially as the Union Jack without issue, obviously. It's entirely comprehensible; it's just not technically correct.

Isn't it also because flag of the union or Union flag

Is supposed to refer to the flag of the U.S.A?

Technically it's called the Union Flag. It's only called the Union Jack when it's flown at sea. But everyone I've ever met just calls it the Union Jack no matter where it's flown, so I don't particularly think it matters.

captcha: 'eat out'. But... I don't want to!

Wikipedia says this:

The Union Flag, also known as the Union Jack, is the flag of the United Kingdom.[1] It retains an official or semi-official status in some Commonwealth Realms; for example, it is known as the Royal Union Flag in Canada.[2] It is also used as an official flag in some of the smaller British overseas territories. The current design dates from the Union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801.[3]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_jack

In other words, it's called the Union flag referring to when Great Britain and Ireland came together to form what we now know as the UK. Not the union of the United States.

Also, this means that it goes by both names. It basically explains the "Union Jack" as a nickname, like the way Old Glory is the nickname for the US flag. Some say it's specifically for naval vessels, but it's a matter of debate.

I always insist on calling it the Union Flag, but that's because I am a pedantic bastard.

It's the Union Jack at sea and the Union Flag everywhere else. I just call it the Union Jack though because that's what I'm used to.

It's only because Saint David doesn't have his own sigil I think, whereas Saint's George, Patrick and Andrew all do

On the contrary, he does http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Saint_David but I think the issue is that wales was never officially brought into the Union, so they were just never added.

yeah but I'd prefer calling them Old glory and Union jack as opposed to union flag and flag of the union or union flag and union flag

But yaknow if you like the situation confusing that's okay ;)

Thnx for explaining tho ;3
