I'm a 2nd year student in the US (University of North Texas)and i'm not sure what the conversion rate is for your money to our doller but i know i pay about $14,000 a year which means $56,000 if all i want is to graduate. I am studying to become a teacher with my yearly take home about 42,500 a year. Thats not going to be fun to pay off. These loans are killing me as well. And for the fellow who said your being taught by experts thats hardly the case here in the states. I have been taught math and lit courses by grad students who dont know shit. Thats a giant waste of money and bullshit that i have to pay but not learn. I also think its bullshit that teachers can teach the same subject but grade differently or give multiple choice tests instead of essay tests. This is crapto those of us trying to keep our GPA up in the 4 range.

second time round in undergrad engineering in Canada. I had only $6000 in student loans from the first time round, seeing as I was doing co-op terms. this time I'm doing the first year and some at college, which is marginally cheaper, and it's still well over $1000 per course in fees alone. and then there's the textbooks.

Funny thing is that if I hadn't dropped out at the 1st uni I went to I wouldn't have had to pay fees because it was still free back then. By the time I actually wanted to go to uni a few years later I had to pay. Curse you Tony Blair! Everything that is wrong with anything is your fault.

As an overseas student, an Australian university wanted to charge me $11,000 per year.
Which is about 3 times the fees a resident pays.
Do they think all other countries are made entirely of gold? Or do they just want to discourage "foreigners"?
So basically my education gets put on hold for 2 1/2 years, until I get my permanent resident status. Woo.

I asked my university to break down the expenses for me in specifics instead of categories and they laughed. I'm just happy I didn't go with Sallie Mae my freshmen year. And there are so many scholarships, I just maintain a minimum 3.8 GPA and get free money. Anyway, college is expensive and really over rated.

# 3 for Exeter here, what are the chances eh?
The Exeter high school is what the boarding school in "A Separate Peace" is based on, right? I just finished that book in English class.

EDIT: Nevermind, apparently this university is in the UK. I was thinking of this [http://www.exeter.edu/] Exeter.

No, that's about £5,500 a year, which is even more expensive than it was in the UK.

You mention the £10000 debt for fees (about £25000 if you take a full dip in the maintainance loans), but do remember that you only have to start paying that when you get a decent wage of at least £15k, so if everything goes tits up and you can't get a job (odds on in this economic climate) you won't be punishsed for it. You did take out loans from SLC, didn't you?

I understand that these "experts" need a decent wage, but still I think that charging students so much is ridiculous. It works out at about £15 per student per lecture, and I know not all of that money is going to the lecturers.

The problem with the loans from the SLC is that, while true you don't need to pay until you are earning over £15k a year, intesret starts mounting up from when you take out the loan, not when you graduate or when you start earning that £15k. I was lead to believe that it would remain interest free until I started earning over the set limit, but reading the small print that interest has already started, meaning more money to pay back to them.

Me too... kinda... Because in Sweden you can chose to either get about $400 or to add $700 as a loan... I chose the $1100 so I will be $20000 in debt to the state after these three years of studying(if my calculations is correct)...
