Hello escapist!

Well, I'm going to university next year (Sept 2011), I have one letter of acceptance from a university which is one of my top 2. The feeling was great at the time, I was in Calculus class and being the product of a generation, I got the e-mail in class, it was exciting.

The novelty has worn off of course. I'm still happy, but it's not as mind blowing as it was built up to be.

feel free to replace any time the word 'University' appears with 'College' and answer the questions as they apply to you

My country makes the distinction between College and University very obvious, I think that's a bit pretentious.

I don't want to read that garbage, tell me what I'm supposed to do
Well, rambling aside, my questions for discussion were:

1) What university are you going to?
2) What program do you plan to study?
3) Why did you pick that university and or program?

For me:

1) Either McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario, or The University of Waterloo in well... Waterloo Ontario.

2) I'm going to be studying physical sciences. (That's Physics and Chemistry as it applies to inanimate matter, if you're unfamiliar)

3) I guess I still haven't really decided, but I'm leaning towards McMaster because I've heard Waterloo is quite crowded, and there are a ridiculous amount of men in comparison to women. (not my only reasons)

I think the popularity of the physical sciences is made pretty clear, I mean, the Enrollment number is 75 people (and the requirements aren't ridiculously high).

Also, I'm interested in knowing if any of you escapists are going to McMaster or Waterloo.

Well, let me know.

1) St George
2) MBBS
3) It's a PBL programme, basically it teaches through actual clinical work so that the student leaves prepared to go straight into hospital work.

1) the smallest and most insginificant university in my country
2) I am becomming a teacher
3) Because it lies in a nice countryside and because it doesn't really matter where you study linguistics and philosophy. The books are the same everywhere.

1. Notre Dame University

2. Computer Science (I'm a programmer and I signed a contract to program for Microsoft once I graduate)

3. I love computer programming and Notre Dame as an all around school is one of the most prestigious in America. Not to mention I got a large scholarship from them.

1) What university are you going to?
University of California at Santa Cruz

2) What program do you plan to study?
Major in Chemistry (inorganic), Minor in French

3) Why did you pick that university and or program?
I chose that rather odd combination of programmes because I mainly desire to go into industrial chemistry, but wish to keep my options open for the future with a liberal art.

1. None right now, I am in a junior college called West Valley. I plan to go to UC Santa Cruz in the fall/spring.
2. Studying philosophy right now then planning on going to Duke Law hopefully.
3. West Valley because I am 10 minutes away from it, UC Santa Cruz because its a really great school and has a good philosophy program, Duke because I just want to go to Duke. I picked philosophy because its something that many people don't study and its insanely more interesting then anything else I have ever taken. Law because anyone could prosecute people with ease, takes something else to be able to defend them. I plan on becoming a defense attorney.

1. RIT (Royal Institute of Technology) in Sweden.
2. Candidate (the equivalence of bachelor's degree I think) in engineering physics.
3. Close to where I live, so I don't have to move just yet. Chose the subject because I like physics, and it allows you to take a masters in particle- and astrophysics.

1) What university are you going to? I went to Mills College for my BA, and UCLA for my Masters and PhD. I have taught at the College of William & Mary and now teach at Tufts University.

2) What program do you plan to study? Going into my undergrad, I planned on double majoring in Music (Music Composition) and German Studies. I ended up Majoring in Music (Electronic Music Composition) and minoring in German Studies. For grad work I specialized in Musicology.

3) Why did you pick that university and or program? I picked Mills because:
-it was a small liberal arts college, which is an experience I wanted.
-it was a women's college, which is also an experience I wanted.
-it was an elite school with *great* financial aid so I got a great education without having to spend a lot of money
-it was close to my family and I'd been living overseas for the previous 5 years and wanted to be close to home.

I picked UCLA because:
-it had a great faculty, including numerous people who I could work with on my dissertation
-it was the center of what has been called the "New Musicology" and that is where I stood ideologically
-it had a great job placement rate
-the grad students were really exciting
-great financial aid package
-great location
-it valued popular music studies

I picked Music & German Studies, because those were interests of mine and I new that it didn't really matter what you major in (unless you wanted to go to grad school in that topic)--excluding Law and Medical, which are trending towards taking people who major in things other than pre-Law and pre-Med.

I picked Musicology because I really love to look at music in a scholarly way, I love teaching, and I could really see myself being a Musicology Professor.

And now I am one.

I go to Salford University, in Manchester. It's not a great University, I think it's ranked at like high 90's/low 100's, and there's only like 105 on the list or something. I also got accepted even though I got a B, C and a D, they were asking for a B and 2 C's. I'm doing a course in Film Studies, you'd think I'd be in a building with state of the art media facilities. Nope, wooden rooms, no desks and speakers that don't work. It's a good thing half the stuff we watch is shit quality and has no sound. Plus, the same building is used by the music department and performing arts. So if it's not people below us reciting Othello, it's people below them blasting music. I don't mind though, it reminds me of when my Primary School was being built, and we were all moved into cabins down the road. Everything was really cheap and you could probably punch through the walls. It's kinda nostalgic being in that department.

I took Film because I've been doing English for the past forever, I took Film Studies in college and loved the literary approach to something I enjoy more than books. I've only ever read Watchmen on my own accord, and that's half pictures. I watch films all the time and it's interesting to study a new art form. The only problem I have encountered is telling people I study Film, they all grin and assume I watch films all day. Yes, we do watch contemporary films in class, but not that often, God forbid I study something that isn't strictly English, Science or Maths.

1) University of Manitoba
2) Honours degree in Biochemistry then Medicine
3) Chose it due to I can live with parents (so cheap), and due to scholarships.
Picked Biochemistry since it is a field of tremendous interest for me and allows me to study organic chemistry freely :p. Chose an honours degree because I was doing a 4 year degree no matter what, and the honours degree is both more intensive and was a requirement for my scholarship. Plus it lessens the arts requirements for applying to Med school :p

1) Kwantlen Polytechnical
2) idk - just give me that piece of paper that saids I am a valuable human being
3) My friends from high school all went there, it was close, and they didn't care about how I suck at math.

I'm not exactly excited about college/university. In fact I hate it. Mainly because its a place you hang around for for a few years meeting people until they give you a piece of paper that saids your qualified to work. And for someone who hates talking to people in real life its horrible. It just like High School.

I was actually going to try to get into the University of Waterloo actually. Not only is it probably the most well-spoken for university I've ever heard of, it's also the only (English-speaking) school in Canada that has an optometry school. I'd have to recommend that university if any.

Though currently I don't think I'll be heading there. My university f**ked me over really bad so I'm probably not going anywhere for a while. Not until I can remove the psychological scars it's given me anyway. (Incidentally, DO NOT go to the University of Manitoba)

1) UT-Austin
2) BS in chemistry, BS in applied math
3) Uhm...it seemed like a good idea at the time, which is incidentally the same answer I would give for why I deemed it prudent to write the laplacian operator in polar coordinates on my arm after one (or ten) shots of gin.

I'm also graduating in a month. Oh gods, I'm not ready for the real world D:
