This band right here is still too unknown for my tastes. If they are ever around go to the show, it is damn damn damn aweseome.

Maximum the Hormone, The Faint, Venaculous. The bands that people should know, Tool, Chevelle, and System of a Down, are the most underrated bands in my opinion.

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

Who doesn't like Bluegrass Jazz? Some people only know Victor Wooten, the awesome bassist, but don't know that he's in a band that plays amazing music.

Most of the stuff you hear on the radio has more than likely been produced by this guy. But his best work is his own music:

Eh. I run into people all the time who don't even know who Venom is...

And Dissection isn't that obscure either, but I'm the only one I know who listens to 'em.

They haven't been mentioned yet, so I'll recommend some of you check out Protest the Hero.

They haven't made too big a splash (as far as I can tell, anyhow) but are a fantastic Prog Metal/Mathcore band. Just look up their "Fortress" album and listen to it all the way through. If you dig metal and all of its different sub-genres, I'd say they're definitely worth a look.

I'll plug a local band from my home state that is extraordinarily good. Look up A Band named Ashes, its kinda indescribable because its so many things. You can get access to some of their best stuff through here.

Edit: I'll also drop Jon McLaughlin as one of the best singer/piano players I've heard just about ever.
Here's a few of my favorites:

That guy is a legend... I bet not many people knew that the Matrix reloaded theme actually has lyrics! :p

OT: My favourite unknown artist:
Only Kidding...! :p
I like quite a lot of music that is harder to find... that is because I listen to a lot of Chillout, and Chillwave, which doesn't have many well known artists outside of the genre's fandom...! And similar artists to those genres...
My favourites at the moment are:
XXYYXX - About You
[youtibe=IG5aSZBAuPs]
Ghostpoet - Us against whatever
And Trentemoller - Take me into your skin

Saul Williams. Not technically a band, I know. But this is one of the first times I've actually heard a hip-hop artist I like in a long time.

Pain, a Finnish industrial metal band

Coma Divine needs a lot more love

There's also Goldfish, a South Afrcan EDM band. I first heard of them throught their 8-bit music video for We Come Together which you may have seen last year. The main reason I like them because it doesn't just like generic dance music, it actually its own unique feel.

Alright, I'll throw one out there.

Kraftwerk.

An old German project originally from the underground Krautrock movement of the early '70's, they were known for experimenting. But it was when they started working on their album Autobahn (1974) that they started working heavily with synthesizers, and were able to make all their music with custom synths, like the one in the spoiler.

They are quite simply the first electronic band/project ever, and inspired those who are considered the pioneers of electronic music, like Gary Numan. And they are still touring today. They also have a persona of being robots themselves, and often use their custom robot counterparts in place of themselves for interviews and photo ops. And all their albums are released in both English and German.

Here's three of their songs, and an interview of Ralf Hutter by the BBC.

Can I be a huge whore and say Miracle of Sound?
I mean, he's pretty unknown and underrated when looking at humanity as a whole.

I shall be spending the next day or two going through all the bands mentioned as firstly I need new music to listen to and secondly I can pretend I know all this cool unheard of music and become mecha hipster. Fear me.

As for a band I love and noones heard about, stars:

Also for a bonus I have no idea is they are popular but this is a hilariously amazing song to start singing and dancing to with friends, especially when drunk and feeling the love:

P.s. I will love you forever if you learn any of those dance moves and bust them out in a social setting.

I'm not sure she's unknown, but she's certainly under-rated.
Yes it's Amanda Fucking Palmer from The Dresden Dolls. She's different and probably a little bit mental but god damn can the woman write and sing. Plus she's married to Neil Gaiman.

Here she is, singing with the equally underrated Kim Boekbinder.

Macabre
A band known to play a genre known as murder metal, which is basically songs about infamous serial killers and mass murderers with the musical styles of everything from grindcore to children's folk songs. Song names like Edmund Kemper had a horrible temper and Mr. Albert Fish(We're children your favorite dish?)

Manilla Road
REALLY underrated metal band for people who like their metal epic and totally bad ass. Seriously, listen to their albums Crystal Logic and Open the Gates and blow your mind.

Outrun the Sunlight. Honestly not been as excited by a band for ages.

http://outrunthesunlight.bandcamp.com/

You can stream the album here, and pay what you will to download. There is ALSO a vocal re-release of this album that is well worth a look.
