Fenix feels emotion, it's just all anger all the time. Which is part of the reason I won't be getting Gears 3.

On topic, I really didn't like Alex Denton as a character. That was Invisible War's main drawback for me when I first played it, having not played the first at the time. And for the record, Invisible War wasn't a bad game, it just had the misfortune to be made after the first Deus Ex.
Fenix should leave the cogs (or whatever its called) and join the angry marines he fould fit in perfectly.
OT: i know someone said it but tidus, the main reason why i dont play FFX is because of Tidus.

Geez, am I the only one who doesn't think Nathan Drake's a bad character?

And don't give me that "mass murderer" BS that Yahtzee started; he's no more a mass murder than Sam Fisher, Lara Croft, Jim Raynor, Number 47, Captain Price, and dozens of other characters are. I don't see why he's the only one that gets slapped with that title.

Not a game, but Shinji Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion is such a whiny bastard. But then again, Eva is pretty much just Mental Instability; The Anime, so it's inevitable that a lot of the characters are dicks.

Kratos: The guy has absolutely no redeeming traits and isn't even tragic from GOW2 onwards. Both he and his games dove head long into boring, monotonous, hyperviolence for the sake of hyperviolence and I could not care less about the plight of a guy willing to literally end the world because he got a raw deal. Also, the fuck is up with the ending of GOW3? Kratos has the power of hope? What is he, a lost planeteer? Ma-ti's cousin? Fuck off.

Every main character in Dead Island, except the Asian lady: Oh god, I sure do love choosing between a *****, a douche bag and a non-character. Purna is nothing but whiny, annoying and patronizing, The football player is just a cocknozzle through and through, and the rapper guy has no personality, other then a southern accent and comparing everything to Hurricane Katrina. N'ORLENS! Least the asian lady, though pretty lacking in character, seems to be genuinely trying to help.

Geralt from The witcher: EMOTE, GOD DAMN IT, EMOTE! Did this guy just have a very specific kind of stroke that stops him from displaying any sort of interest in anything? The entire game, regardless of situation, he maintains an even, disinterested tone and a flat, unfeeling face. Why the hell should I care about this guy when he doesn't even seem to care. You just killed a dragon and slept with a lady, smile you son of a *****.

Shepard from mass effect: Ironic, I know, considering the player decides his actions, but it's the choices he gives us that bugs me. Why the hell does Shepard only have two real settings: Violent, immoral bad cop, and whinging, useless good cop. And why can't I chose to take a "good" option if I haven't been being good for a long time before hand? Does he have to charge his morals before using them? You'd think he'd have some flexibility what with the fact that they had to replace his spine with a rubber hose during ME2; the universe saving cyborg fuck.

Alex Mercer is a villain protagonist, so he's partially forgiven. At least he was written pretty well, for what he is.

Every Fable protagonist forever sucks. Why won't they make a game where you can play as Reaver?

I'm going to have to go with The Prisoner from Oblivion. As good as the game is, because there's so much choice, every character just feels like a blank slate. That, plus the fact that you'll probably do all of the quests and organizations, makes me feel like my character's only in it for the achievements, so to speak. The fact that there's pretty much only one option in dialogue to progress through it means that every character is essentially equivalent. It's just a matter of approach to combat.

One fucking word: Tidus!

Because nobody wants to play a game where you can gallivant around the globe fucking everything in sight you like the look of and mercilessly gunning down everything else with an accompaniment of suave one-liners.

Wait a second... loads of people would want to play that. Why is Lionhead fucking around with Fable: It's a Horse this time when they have this potential? Plus, an entire game of Stephen Fry's voice work? Fuck yes! He had way too little to do in Fable 2 and Fable 3.

I found the Arbiter from Halo 2 actually interesting as a character, especially compared to the robot-like Master Chief who doesn't really have anything to like character-wise.

Auron from Final Fantasy X was a BADASS. Tidus on the other hand...

From a role-playing perspective, the Warden in Dragon Age is cool because he/she is what you make him/her to be, but in terms of characterization and story, the supporting characters stole the show. Sten was interesting because of the Qunari culture clash, Zevren, Shale, and Oghren were were funny in different ways, and Loghain was a great villian because his motivations are simple and complex at the same time. Also, Loghain's VA (Simon Templeton) is amazing.

So having just finished Gears 3 I found myself watching the end cut scene and thinking to myself 'Marcus Fenix is as likeable and charasmatic as a damp sponge', I know thats supposed to be his thing, the brooding hero, but he never displays a single iota of emotion. This is in a game where even Baird actually has a second where he isnt being a sarcastic dick. I found myself liking the supporting cast more than the main guy. .
So my question is this, have you ever played a game where you end up liking a supporting character more than the lead?
I honestly really liked Marcus Fenix; I think saying he's emotionless is a really unfair criticism after Gears 3. He seemed really desperate and upset during those brilliant scenes at the end of Acts 3 and 5, and then he completely unloads all his built-up rage on that Griffin guy sometime in Act 4.

For me I'd go with Master Chief. THIS is the guy with not a single iota of emotion. He's probably the blandest most generic character I've ever seen whose only mildly original feature is that we never actually see his face, which is no excuse for him having zero personality.

Nathan. Cunting. Drake.

He very nearly ruined Uncharted 2 for me at the very beginning with his attempts at humor and drama and had me screaming at the screen when he traded the cool, interesting, badass British chick, e.g. the only good character in that game, for the dull, helpless, screamy American chick.

I also loathed ALL of the characters in Halo 3: ODST. Now, I am one of the biggest Halo fans on the entire planet, but between awful voice acting, the shitty, made for TV writing and the general feel of them, those characters are in my top five worst ever.

And how could I forget the winner of the Blandest Character In The Universe award, Desmond from AC.

You know what? I'm just going to say EVERYONE voiced by Nolan North. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but every single on of his characters make me want to murder puppies.

It's because he is written like a normal guy who goes on whacky adventures. All of those other people are assassins, soldiers and the like, so it's to be expected from them. I hate him for other reasons though...

Gotta say I'm not a fan of Duke Nukem. You can only put up with so many one-liners before you decide you've had enough and deliberately trigger your own laser tripbombs.

Same goes for Caleb (1997's 'Blood'). If I wanted to hear one-liners and wisecracks from Army Of Darkness and other films, then I'd go and watch Army Of Darkness or those other films. Here Caleb, keep holding this stick of lit TNT for a moment.

So, I see some people bitching about Shepard not walking away from Cerberus. There are two very logical reasons he stays with Cerberus for the duration of Mass Effect 2:
Well, as you can recall, Shepard DIES at the beginning of the game. Cerberus spends a fortune to bring him back. Shepard kind of owes Cerberus now, even if he wanted to leave, the Illusive Man is the only reason he's alive at that point. And if Shepard tried to just walk away, the Illusive Man would probably try to have him killed
and
The Collectors are blowing through human colonies, and the Alliance and the Council are doing nothing about it. The Illusive Man gives Shepard a new ship, options for a new crew, and the information he needs to stop the Collectors, well, Shepard has to make the best out of a bad situation.
Seriously, of all the things to ***** about in Mass Effect 2, this seemed pretty damn retarded.

I don't know if I agree to that. I didn't mind Mickey, but I did like Dutch and Buck. I absolutely hated the Sniper and whatever the name of the character Tricia Helfur voiced. I disliked the entire cast of Halo: Reach even more. To me, that game did the impossible by creating a bunch of Master Chief clones that were even duller than the Master Chief ever was. I can't harp on Noble Six too much, because he's basically a representation of the player.
Really? That's kinda funny. I thought the cast of Reach was GREAT, but then again I am one of the few people that finds the Chief to be a very good character...

Different tastes I guess.
