Unlikeable Lead characters

Was there a likeable character in Bulletstorm? Maybe the kid in the flashback? Maybe. The big one for me is Shepard in ME2. Why are you working for the terrorist organisation? Walk. The. Fuck. Away.

I think it's because they must've hired Germans to do the voice-acting, and their only experience of American machismo, it seems, is through 1980s Hollywood action movies.

On a minor note, much as I loved Sam Fisher, whenever he used a medkit in Splinter Cell, he'd always make a rather camp 'ooooh!' sound, or a sexually-suggestive grunt.

As soon as I read the thread title, the words "NATHAN DRAKE" began to endlessly and uncontrollably repeat in my head. It's still going.

EDIT: I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the games. Some of my favorites. But it's hard to deny that Nathan Drake is a GIANT DOUCHEBAG.

I think his personality kinda fits with the nature of the game so even though he can be kind of an ass to his fellow cast members it never actually bothered me much.

OT: Luigi over Mario. I can't believe i've seen that said only once in this thread. Other than that i don't really know for games. Ask me about unlikeable lead characters in anime though and we'll really get this thing rolling.

But to really answer your question, most of the people who are saying that Nathan Drake is unlikable are really only saying so because Yahtzee said it in his review. People really like to parrot that guy.

I never much cared for the main character in GTA Vice City (not that there was all that much story to begin with there). I was always more interested in the talk show people. I can still quote that BJ's fit for football bit.

All of the main characters in the first inFamous. I found Cole to be a douche, Zeke is like a fat mosquito that won't go away or otherwise do something useful, and Trish just seems like a moody ***** to me. Hell, the character I empathised with most was Sasha and she was a psychopathic goo-monster!

I'm gonna say Silver from Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. I'd say he counts as a main character since you play as him for 1/3 of the game.

He's just a prissy little wimp. While Sonic and Shadow use their own bodies as weapons, Silver uses telekinesis. He also has a badly put in minor love/friend thing and he he was difficult to play as.

Also this. This 1'000 times. Silver just came across as a whiny, angsty (even more than Shadow, considering he got over it), limp-wristed little ***** whose only purposes were to pad out the story and to add an unnecessary gameplay element to an already poorly-thought-out game.

Luke from Tales of the Abyss. Begins the game as a whiny, selfish little douchebag and ends the game as a suicidal emo with not an ounce of likability. I'd much rather have the game about Guy than that red-haired joke...

How is he a douchebag? Maybe the half shirt tuck is a little douchey, but that's really all I can think of. I'm genuinely curious why he came across as a douche to you.

Well, his only motivation is stealing the priceless artifact before the villain does it first. Oh, and his wisecracking is really annoying, especially since he does while ending the lives of those around him. But if you really want to know...There's a swimming pool at the top of the Hotel in the city level. Jump into it, and then out of it. Once you do, TRY to make it through the next 10 seconds or so without flinching. It's impossible.

Again, I LOVE the games, but I reeeeally hate Nathan Drake.

Vaan. You're not as bad as Tidus or Squall, but I'm afraid your existence is still completely unnecessary. I will simply neuter you with a dull spoon, and you're free to go.

Cloud. You could have been the least-unlikeable of the bunch. Then you let Aeris die. You are hereby sentenced to an eternity of yaoi rape from Barret, Vincent and Cait Sith.

Kratos. Yes, you're a bad-ass god killer, we get it. Yes, you were wronged by some people at some point, and yes, one or two of the deities you have slain did have it coming. But in the end, you have daddy issues that could've been solved with the two of you getting your divine drink on.
Put it this way: Who here remembers Superboy Prime? YOU'RE RUINING EVERYTHING!!

John Marston. Not so much bad (though he is pretty awful in just about every way), but as overrated as a character can get. He's pretty universal fap material for the video game community as perfection in a video game protagonist. He is the most whiny, cliché, predictable, and all around boring character I've every played. I mean I've played bad characters, but every line of Marston's made me want to blow my brains out. But I'm in the minority, and as Marston so unironically states to the generalisimo as if he's a 21st century man instead of an actual criminal from the west in the late 19 century, "Shouldn't be people be able to choose for themselves?"

you are so right he bored me to death and destroyed the experience for me.ok he is an ex-criminal who has regrets for his past but he could have some life in him.
