Unlikeable Lead characters

Final Fantasy X. So much. I don't think there are any characters in the game I like less than him. An arrogant whiny idiot with a nasal voice. Bwuh!

Annoying voice, complete douchebag, treates everyone like crap and seems overly arrogant.

JRPGs are just riddled with them. Tidus comes to mind, as does Edge from Star Ocean .. who oddly enough looks a lot like Tidus, but less like Meg Ryan.

I liked pretty much everyone more than Edge in Star Ocean 4 except the cat girl whose name escapes me.

I liked Raquel in Wild Arms 4 over Jude,she gained points for telling Jude to stop being a self centered dick but kinda loses them for hooking up with that sad excuse of a drifter, Armuand.

Micah from Fire Emblem: Radient Dawn. I always hated her for her view on Ike (the hero of the last game and the third part of this game) being the villain. Ok sure she want to liberate her people from the oppressors however since it was her nation that wage war on ther other nation in the first place, I don't have sympathy for her.

I gotta say that every iteration of Hawke in Dragon Age II is completely unlikable. At least without a voice, there was some ambiguity in the delivery and I could make it up as I went.

I would also add Shepard to that list, parcticularly because in ME2 (s)he is such a giant tool for clearly evil incompetent assholes that I hated my own character. The lack of obvious resolution choices and decisions leaves only 2 canon versiosn of the character, both of which can't think for her/himself and can only wholeheartedly agree with intergalactic terrorists or act dickish toward them but still do everything they ask.

Ah yes, THAT problem with Mass Effect 2... If I'm honest Cerberus should have had next to no hold on you after a few missions since "We resurrected you" as leverage should only get them so far.

Off Topic: Is it ever explained why Cerberus knows about the Reapers but basically nobody else does?

I don't really mind Marcus Fenix tbh, his personality is so down and drab that I kinda forget it's there and just project my own instead.

Raiden from MGS2. Most un-awe inspiring, 'girly' action hero ever.

Alcatraz from Crysis 2: Mute bastard walks into the most obvious traps, follows the stupidist orders and ideas, and pretty much dies multiple times over through the course of the story for it. Only thing that keeps the drudgery going is the suit which defibllirates him no less than THREE times in the 5 hour campaign. I was actually more frustrated with him than I was with a similarly complacent character; Gordan Freeman, because Freeman has at least the excuse of not being a trained elite soldier or anything, he's just a scientist blundering through his own importance, brought about by a sheer will to survive. Alcatraz, in contrast, is just a clod.

...actually (as a personal IMO of course) just chalk up every single whiteboy high pitched JRPG protagonist ever. They all piss me off to no end.

FFXII. Vaan could spontaneously combusted and collapsed in a sewage ditch and I wouldn't have cared at all. Now Balthier, I would have shagged him hard enough that he would have walked funny for a week ...and Fran too. Bosch was pretty cool too, and a sexy blonde. Penelo was sweet, and useful in a fight.

Also, Ashe could have joined Vaan.

I feel the same way about Vaan but did you noticed he's not the lead in FF12. His whole story was to find his brother's killer and still something out of the castle. Within a couple of hours he gets caught up in Balthier and Fran's Quest and later Ashe's Quest and he just tags along. He finds out that because of his stupidity Penelo got kidnapped, they go save her and he finds out Basch didn't kill his brother...end of his quest.

I hate Nathan Drake because I can't stand his unfunny wisecracks, which sound like they were written by a Michael Bay reject (or Joss Whedon). It's just shitty, self-aware dialogue. I can only think of 2-3 people in the whole fucking world with enough charisma to pull it off, and the guy they got ain't one of 'em.

My hatred is strengthened by the fact that the Uncharted games look like a lot of fucking fun. I just can't stomach more than 5-10 minutes without wanting to tear my ears off.

I'm going to say that it's hard to beat Kratos from God of War 2 + 3. The first one was pretty good with him as a character (though I still didn't care for it as I don't care for hack-n-slashers). The rest... he just decides to murder everyone. He doesn't care that his actions kill thousands, if not millions, of innocent people. All he cares about is getting his own way, and that makes him an unlikeable asshole to me.

Well, then again, that's kinda why I play the GoW games: So I can BE an unlikable asshole while having absolutely no ramifications in the real world (where I am generally mild mannered unless someone pisses me off).

I know she isn't the "main" character, since nobody is, but... Sister Miram Godwinson, from SMAC. That God-damn biblethumper is almost impossible to stand, because she'll get on your a**e if you so much as look funny at her, or the planet, or one of the other factions, or...

I never said that was a bad thing per say, just that it made him an unlikeable asshole. That's the point of the thread after all. Plus, if he wasn't an unlikeable asshole, they wouldn't had much of a story because he wouldn't do half the things he did.

I like Tidus, Vaan, all of the characters from FFXIII, and I don't mind Nathan Drake...

HOWEVER, I think that Cloud can got eat a pistol (during a cutscene that he isn't bulletproof), and Sonic can run full speed into a line of fibre-wire...

The dude from Alpha Protocol, Michael Thornton. What an annoying git. And the most annoying thing that you never knew what git thing was going to come out of his git mouth. You could try to be cool and he'd just be more of a git. The game made you think there were at least three ways to be but there was only git.
