A company in Australia has developed a completely new way of rendering graphics, allowing unlimited detail in videogames.

Check out their video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00gAbgBu8R4

That blew me away. I will follow the story of this company from now on. Good on them!

I want to see how this will improve not only backgrounds and scenery, but moving characters

Ok so they don't use polygons. They still haven't explained how that fixes anything, especially since the programs they describe as already using this technology is crazy expensive in terms of RAM and processing power.

In other words, doesn't seem legit.

Bold claim, and it still doesn't address the issue of processing power on normal computers.
They mentioned "unlimited" but gave no hint on how the hell that works.

Still, its interesting. More so once word from industry insiders begins to come out about it.

I'd love to see this in the future. The dude said they were getting 20FPS on software rendering, just imagine when you send that to the GPU, no problem at all.

could it run on the current gen (in some form) or are we going to have to wait a gen or 2 to do it?

It could run on PC's no doubt, because they were doing it right there. But on a console? Somehow i seriously doubt it. As a tech demo with just that it could, but add in AI ect. into the game and i think consoles would explode. Plus the next gen consoles look like they'll be small upgrades, not any real generation leap, especially on the CPU side (IBM have been approached for the CPU again). So i'm not holding my breath for this tech on consoles.

So, in summary: Interesting tech, would only appear in PC exclusives for a long time. So, essentially, we'll not see it in a big massive AAA blockbuster (multi-platform in other words, since i doubt games like starcraft 2 are really crying out for more polygons, but mMO's? they could benefit) for a decade :p

I want to see how this makes developers and critics stop spending so much effort on that and focus more on the actual game.

Over the last few years, the studios have been trying to get as much out of the technology as possible, but this whole Unlimited Detail thing stops them from needing to and lets them focus on more immediately noticeable things like art direction.

Eh... lots of flashy imagery with no real explanation of how it works (apart from that it uses atoms, "just like our real world!").

Would be cool if it exists, but I don't see much evidence that it does right now, and their apparent year-long disappearance gives me more doubts.

I, simply put, don't really buy the claim at face value. At the most basic level, each atom represents a chunk of data consisting of position and color. This information would take anywhere from just a few bytes to a few words per atom. This means that, on current generation consoles, you are limited to active tracking of between 100 and 300 million atoms. My PC could reasonably track somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 billion atoms actively.

This is a case of trading one thing for another. In this case it is geometric detail for storage space.

IT looks great but the way its presented it seems like a trolling attempt as its done so badly.

Ya... unlimited anything is simply not possible within the digital world, so just say high data density if you mean that.
Oh and "our world is made of atoms just like the real world" - no it isn't, you just have alot of surface data points, in no way does that equate to atoms.

Why do games have a poly/data budget? Because your console/PC are not supercomputers that these developers are running.
Remember the Crysis malarkey where they made the best looking engine ever but noone could run it for years?
It's just that all over again, and in 20 years time I'm sure it will come in very handy.

As they clearly demonstrated all that graphics power does not a pretty environment make, art style is still the dogs bollocks.

Very true. This way though, they'll be able to spend less time with dialogue and reading and be able to tell damn good stories with just the visual cues. This could realistically introduce a new genre
