Unskippable Celebrates 100th Episode

Today, Unskippable turns in its 100th episode lampooning videogame cutscenes by providing a handy guide to making your cutscene unforgettable.

It almost didn't happen. Back in 2008, two friends who had been producing weekly comedy videos edited together a show that they hoped would be hilarious. It Unskippable shared the top honors in the Film Festival [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/unskippable/394-First-Place-Unskippable-01-Lost-Planet] and Graham and Paul have been making one roughly every week since then. Today marks the 100th episode of Unskippable and Graham and Paul have chosen to use what they've learned from 2 years of producing the show and impart that wisdom to would-be game designers.

Check out Unskippable 101: A Guide to Cinematics [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/unskippable/2518-Unskippable-100-A-Guide-to-Cinematics].

Here are some of the things that you'll learn:

Don't show, tell!
Always hire an overly dramatic narrator
Use a made-up calendar with no context for the player
Make your moon at least 500 times normal size
Crows are creepy. Use a lot of crows. More is better
When in doubt, have your characters repeat what another just said but add a question mark.
Players love scripted vehicle sequences that don't allow them to act on their own. Use these sequences liberally.

It's clear that Graham and Paul have a great time making fun of videogame cinematics and cutscenes, and, as long as videogames keep getting made, they'll have plenty of material to work with going forward. Here's to another hundred episodes ... if they can keep their sanity.

I doubt they'll ever manage to run out, cut scenes are getting highly "Lucasised" nowadays. Anything that keeps the funny going.

EDIT: And on the topic of overly dramatic narrators what nerd, in their right mind, isn't going to get Patrcik Stewart into their game?

Congratulations to them for making 100 episodes, but is this really news? I mean, sure, it's news, but exactly how interesting is it? Maybe I'm biased since I dislike them so much, but I just don't think it's worth putting it as a news post, rather than just as something related to the content of the site.

Still, congratulations to them, I wish I could make money from talking to my friend while watching stuff too.

Funny video. Though, I must say, the rundown of all the jokes in the description hampered the comedy somewhat.

Wow 100 episodes. I remember laughing my ass off at the first one and I'm really happy that it kept on going.

100 episodes and 5000 posts from me! It's a sign.

This was hilarious, but it could have been so much better if Paul and Graham hadn't talked so much. Ideally they would have written the script, put it in a blocky font and scrolled the text at agonizingly slow speeds down the screen to a backdrop of meteors destroying Pangaea.

Or at least gotten Patrick Stewart to read it for them.

Ack! Double post! I usually don't fall for such insidious browser caching tricks, but I'm distracted today.

I guess I'll use this opportunity to say what I forgot previously - Congratulations!

I first thought that this show was a waste of time. Then I saw the Bouncer episode. I have been a loyal fan ever since. Grats to Lrr.

Two years... Seems like a few days only.
Thank You Graham, thank You Paul ! You make this world a little better place. Keep up the good work :)

Bay the way : After reading this sentence
"Crows are creepy. Use a lot of crows. More is better"
My first thought was "ya, COWS are quite creepy indeed. All this grass to milk thing sure is suspicious..."

I can't believe it's been two years. And to think, in a few years people will look back and say that LRR's total domination of the Escapist web presence started here. Keep up the great work, guys!

Thanks to Graham & Paul, I feel as if I'm fully capable of making opening cutscenes!

Thanks Unskippable! Here's to a thousand more episodes (even though you are Canadian ;] ).
