Im sure we have all been there before, where you travel downtown to pick up a game or 2, or perhaps you download a game after hearing about it from a friend and played them out on a whim?

Patapon 2: allthough it's premise is basic, it is addictive: the jist is that you are a commander, you listen to the rhythm and press buttons in a certain order to issue commands, from things such as moving forwards to defending and attacking. You can also suit up your Patapon army with equipment you find during the stages and spoils to offer to a tree to improve your forces appearences and strengths or to bolster your forces, its remarkably deep for a simple looking game.

Start at 1:00 (Note, the video is in Japanese)

Half-Minute Hero: At first it looked like shovelware based purely by the case, but it is an alright game, the graphical style is remiscent of 8-bit games (or possibly 16 bit?) and has 3 starting modes set in different time periods with a different protagonist and gameplay elements, though some story elements overlaps.

Word of warning, the 3 spoilers are pretty lengthy, you might only have to read Hero 30 to get the basic premise.

Hero 30 (should be played first in order to get the basic plot and to avoid spoilers later)
One is a satarical real-time RPG, you are a boy who discovers that Darklords across the land keep using a world destruction spell that kicks in after 30 seconds, each stage has 30 seconds to complete and has an isolated story, in the very first stage you meet a being called the Time Goddess who can wind back time for cash, you can replay the stages you have previously if you wan't. you can even try beating your record times, replay stages to obtain missed armor or to try stages on a diverged path.

Evil Lord 30 (again, serious spoilers)
You play as a redeemed darklord who has to save his love from a curse from turning her into a monster entirely, allthough there is no World ending spell to worry about in this mode, the main character is picky about skin blemishes and would fail the mission if the sun came up in 30 seconds, it's sort of a Rock-Paper-Scissors dealie where you have to summon goons whilst avoiding being hit. Again the Time Goddess will help by taking payment of coins.

Princess 30
you are a crossbow-crazy princess who has to cure her father of his mysterious illness before your curfew is in effect by collecting medicinal cures orelse you'll be locked outside of the castle at night, its a rail shooter where you have freemovement of the basic axis, stages will go forwards then backwards once you complete the objective then dash home as fast as you can, but remember to protect the guards that is carrying you.

Start at 0:57

Sorry if the post is large, though it is probally comprehensive of the games are. (did use spoiler tags to shrink to slightly, not to mencton trimming out Gitarooman Lives, though if the topic is a hit, ill devote a post to it)

Risen for PC. I'd heard only a smattering about the Gothic series, overshadowed as it's been by the apparently superior Elder Scrolls games. Downloaded the Risen demo on a whim, enjoyed it, and then procedded to spend $20 and about 60 hours on the full game. I greatly prefer it to Oblivion, and I now harbor a nagging suspicion that the gaming press is biased against euro devs.

Hype is the biggest killer of games. I just realised that some of my all time favourite games were purchased because they sounded good on the box - not because I'd been waiting for the release for years on end. In fact, that games that I do wait for tend to let me down.

Quite true, its surprising how many entertaining games slip under the radar, never to be menctioned by the press or even a brief video at venues like E3, the last game where hype killed it for me was Spore, i only played through the cell stage up to the tribal stage then stopped, only for the game to be lost or all the installs used up. :x

The recent King Kong game.

What I was expecting: Some copy-pasted hack 'n' slash game featuring you playing as Kong or a hero on Skull Island.

What I got: a great survival-horror FPS, and the monsters on Skull Island were varied in size, skill, health, and attack methods.

Mass Effect. I bought it last year around the time the sequel was out and I had honestly not so much as seen a moment of game-play or heard anything about it other than five things:

There were obsessive fans over a character named Tali.
There were obsessive fans over a character named Garrus.
There were stupidly long loading times involving elevators.
The controls for the vehicles sucked.
The Reapers were something very scary.

Halfway through playing it for the first time I ordered Mass Effect 2.

Agreed. Funnily enough most of mine like that were very well known amongst the gaming community, I was merely oblivious because I wasn't the type to go on gaming websites at the time.

Portal and Bioshock are two that came to mind, I knew next to nothing about them. I bought Bioshock based purely upon the demo, and Portal came with the Orange Box which I bought purely because it had Half Life 2, Episodes 1 and 2 and "Two other games".

There's heaps of indie games out there that deserve more attention. I found Osmosis to be fun.

Speaking of the Orange Box i should really fire up the Half-Life (Currently) duology, episodes 1 and 2, plus portal sometime.

I really enjoyed Freedom Fighters and felt like it was a way underrated game.
Whole-heartedly agreed.

3D dot game heroes. I bought it totally on impulse, not thinking I'd like it that much, but I love it.

WET.
I got it only because I saw it cheap when I was ordering Borderlands off Amazon. Originally thought it was about good enough to fill in the time when pals weren't on Borderlands, turned into something I find myself going back to when I'm bored of games being meaningful and serious and I want fun.
Still one of the few recent games I remember enjoying nearly all the way through.

Shadowrun.
Wasn't expecting it to be so addicting whilst being so simple.
Still playing it after 4-5 years since release.

I can think of two right off the bat:

My introduction to the Neverhood Chronicles was at my aunt's house. She's a fan of Myst-style adventure/puzzle games, more so than I am. After playing a few Myst knock-offs and tiring quickly of them, she suggested the Neverhood. The claymation visuals drew me in initially, and Klayman's hilarious mishaps got me hooked. As soon as I witnessed the weasel chase, I knew I had to get it.

The other is the first Dawn of War game. I went to the local software store looking for a good RTS title. I had narrowed it down to choosing between Dawn of War and Rise of Legends, two titles I knew next to nothing about. After agonizing over it for some time, I finally thought "screw it, just pick one" and took Dawn of War to the checkout. I haven't regretted my decision since, for not only did it turn out to be my favorite RTS game of all time, but it also introduced me to the pure distilled awesomeness that is the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

I found "Freedom Fighters" in a store, looked at the box, thought it would be cool, brought it home, and it was cool.

Not exactly the best damn game in the world, but some crazy funny fun.

Singularity! Bam. I've said it before and I'll say it again. My favourite game of last year. It was an absolute blast, and brought a lot of fun back to shooters, as well as some really amazing new weapons... I will swear on my grandmothers grave that the seeker is the best gun.... EVER!

Hunter The Reckoning games. I rented one waaaaay back in the day simply because it offered multiplayer co-op. It was fantastic.

Same goes for Fire Pro Wrestling. Funny little game. It's amazing with 4 people, beer, and pizza.

Also Way of the Samurai(1, 2 and 3). I picked up the first because I was looking for a good sword fighting game instead of a slasher. I was very pleasantly surprised.

I've got two games that I can recall buying on a complete random whim, and enjoying immensly.

First is No More Heroes. WAYYYY back in 2007, I went into Gamestop to pre-order Super Smash Bros Brawl. While I was there, I figured I'd pick up a game to pass the time.

I took one look at No More Heroes, thought, "eh, this should kill some time", and bought it. GREAT DECISION.

A year later, I was in Gamestop, again, looking for a game to kill some time. I noticed a JRPG on the wall I had never seen before. I thought "oh yeah, I saw a preview of that, looked interesting, I'll pick it up". And that's the story of how I bought Persona 4, and found out exactly HOW amazing a game could be.
