What do you mean, 'brand tie-in'...? There's no such thing. You probably mean franchise and/or license games. Movie tie-ins are mostly awful, I wholeheartedly agree on that, but license games have a lot of great stuff going on. I mean, look at some of the superhero games of recent years... the 'Wolverine: Origins' game was awesome, even despite its status as a movie tie-in.
Without going into too much detail here, even though there always reason to be cautious I'd say condemning these games wholesale is utterly retarded, because that way you'll
definitely miss out on some great stuff... take 'Transformers: War for Cybertron', for example - I'll bet many die-hard fans of the original franchise would squeal in delight upon playing it, but they probably never will because they think it's just one more piece of license trash like the Bayformers movie tie-ins. (By the way, yes, the Transformers Armada game was fantastic.)
As for Space Marine, I think it looks pretty good so far. RTS/RTT games are fine, but this here is really more to my liking - 3rd person shooter/brawler with RPG elements and lots of up-close visceral action. The long development time is a bummer, but I'd rather wait than play something half-baked. Also, even though the Marines in the trailer are Smurfs, the developers already stated that these guys serve as spaceholders and that it hasn't been decided yet what chapter(s) will actually appear.
As for the people already whining about the upcoming movie like there's no tomorrow... grow up. Instead of being grateful that a movie is actually being made you're throwing ridiculous hissy fits of the exact kind that gives nerds a bad name. Besides, Dan motherfucking Abnett is the lead script writer - how bad can it really be?

The reason why they are using the Ultramarines is quite obvious, it's because A) They are the generic Chapter, showing the righteous fury and strength that is all Space Marines, and B) It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to do a movie about the Space Wolves, or the Blood Angels, because people who don't know the lore of the Chapter won't be able to make any sense of it.
This guy hit the nail on the head. Making a movie based around one of the more interesting niché chapters wouldn't work, because like any first movie in a franchise it has introductory character, meaning that the first thing that needs to be covered is the basics.
Also, the latest newsletter from a few days ago confirms the presence of a second chapter in the movie. Wanna know which one? Here's a hint: They use agony as a form of meditation, they're badass sword fighters and they turned the Imperial Palace on holy Terra into a fucking juggernaut fortress.
