That's just the way we do things up here in the Pacific Northwest (I live in SW Washington, across the river from Portland), we may rob you at gun point but we will do it politely.

Of course he should still be punished, you can't just let people rob gas stations and get away with it because he needed money, sad but order must be kept.

In after people saying this guy is a prick.

Really, this should be basically the example of how not everyone turns to crime because they're selfish assholes. Yet some people still remain blind to how society and crime functions.

That is perfect.

And I've got to say sucks for him. I mean he has to resort to stealing to get money for his family and if he gets caught he goes to jail. He's in a difficult situation and he broke the law to try to get out of it. I can see where he's coming from, but he's still a criminal because of it. I wouldn't expect any less if I did the same.

This is unfortunately one of those cases where the intent may have been pure, but the action wasn't; honestly I wouldn't want to punish the guy for this, but unfortunately that's how our society works regardless

Well, it sounds like he was desperate but the thing is that a majority of thieves are desperate. He was polite which might get him a slightly easier punishment (maybe a month or so less in jail) but the fact is he still broke the law. I really feel for his kids, poor things.

Saying "I'm sorry" while implying that you're going to kill someone if they don't hand you money is not, in my opinion, enough to earn you any kind of pity. This guy deserves to go to jail.

That's what I would do if I ever robbed a store. You wouldn't want to give people the wrong impression, right?
