Grey and Cory's Patreon page was taken down recently by them but I found out why. In case anyone was wondering, I'm posting my findings here. The TL;DR of it though is that EDA and it's patreon is currently on hold until they can deal with some stuff and get back to an actual regular schedule again, which they say will be soon. Full transcript is below.

HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA (what's going on?)

Earlier this month I sent out some cryptic Tweets about some personal problems I'm facing and how they'd be cutting into i]Erin Dies Alone's[/i] production schedule and forcing me to reduce my internet presence somewhat. Savvy users pointed out that there wasn't really any EDA production schedule to cut into, updates have been uh, sporadic. So sporadic, in fact, that we're shutting down the Patreon. This doesn't mean Erin Dies Alone is over or abandoned, quite the opposite, but right now I'm not comfortable taking anyone's money while the production schedule is so up in the air and when we DO get the comic back on track (more on that in a bit) we figure we owe you at least 3 months worth of comics to make up for missed updates. Everyone who ever donated to the $5 or above tiers will get their digital book when it's ready and we're looking into other rewards for the higher tiers. I can't say we'll never run another Patreon (and I'd full expect you to be cautious if we did) but for now we just want to make some comics.

Side note: The reason this post isn't on the actual Patreon site is because I couldn't find a way to shut down the money-side of the patreon without also killing the creator page. I didn't want to charge people for the coming month (which would have happened tomorrow) so I shut down the page completely.

So what's actually going on? I don't really want to go into too much details about how 2017-2018 has spitroasted my life, other than to say I'll be returning to the UK for a few months to deal with some personal issues, get my health back in order and, hopefully, write some fucking comics. Luckily this coincides with some big changes in Cory's life that will let him dedicate more time to our comic(s) and take another shot at that whole "drawing pictures for a living" thing.
I don't want to put an exact date on when we'll be "back," but it'll be sometime soon.

Also something else might be happening that I really really really want to tell you guys about but I can't. It's gonna be fuckin' great though.

If you've got any questions or comments, the best way to reach me is via Twitter or Curious Cat

dyingalone.net is where it has been posted since they left the Escapist, though as OP shows, updates have been very sporadic.

Wow, they actually shut down the Patreon because they weren't making anything. I thought the way it was done was to just let it run indefinitely while not actually doing anything, ala Spoony.

Spoony has been on the internet since the early days, so he has fans that will always be there to give him pity money.

Oh, I thought EDA had ended when they left the Escapist. I thought Defy had the rights to that and Critical Miss?

Thanks for sharing this. I was wondering why there hadn't been any new pages in a while.

Escapist never owned EDA. The deal they had was:

1) Escapist would host EDA
2) Cory and Grey would retain ownership of EDA
3) The Escapist, not owning EDA, would not pay C&G to make EDA
4) Since they weren't getting paid to make EDA, the Escapist allowed C&G to advertise their Patreon along side it

Defy has the rights to CM, but when they made EDA, Grey and Cory kept the copyright completely to themselves, so they can do whatever the hell they want with it. Now, I THINK that Defy gave G&C the rights to CM as well, but I can't remember. I mean, I don't know why they wouldn't. It's not like Defy could ever do anything with it, but yeah.

NOW where will I get my Final Fantasy fanfictions?

Yea, sorry, not letting that go.
I think you need to drink some more Crystal Cola like the rest of us.

Does their website have all the older EDA as well? Or are those owned by the Escapist?
Yep. dyingalone.net has all the old and new comics. Defy owns none of EDA.

I was actually intrigued by the series at first. I liked the tone. I liked the writing. I liked the general concept of trying to rekindle things that once made a depressive happy with their life. Something I can relate to with a vengeance.

Then they went Captain N.

I Have A Very Bad Feeling About This.

I hung on after the Halo fanfiction, the moment of that raccoon dumping Erin's medication down the toilet being a strikingly dark little moment that made me say "Hey, we're still on course after all."

Then Final Fantasy happened.

Then on the way out, not only did Final Fantasy happened, but the writers forgot who the story was even about...

I get what you're saying but I don't think you really understand what Grey and Cory set out to accomplish here.

Yes, it's about a depressive shut-in who seems to be hallucinating as well in some way. But it's also supposed to have some comedy. To have fun with the immersed-in-another-world concept. If that is simply something that doesn't appeal to you in any way, then again, yes. I understand why you want them to get back to her real life. But that's just simply not G&C's vision for the series and never has been.

The thing is, I feel like EDA's themes of escapism and isolation actually work better with the alternate realities she keeps traveling to and from. If this was not a thing that happened at all and we were constantly stuck at her apartment for the entire series, I don't think the dark moments would carry as much emotional impact as they do now. This way, we are seeing Erin's mind. What she wishes to be, or at least, where she wishes to escape to. We become a part of these absolutely mad visions and become invested in them just as she is.

So when the hammer finally drops and the series begins to wrap up in it's inevitably depressing way, we'll care a lot more as an audience about those adventures and this isolation going away just as Erin would feel. It's easy to get caught up in these other worlds in a way as we read this comic. And as we get lost in them, we naturally lose sight of how Erin is secretly suffering deeply as she isolates herself like this. It's too easy to ignore the negative effects just as it would be in real life.

And that is why I agree very much with this entire direction that G&C have taken for EDA. I know somewhat what it's like to lose yourself in your own world and to run away from your problems. I know how amazing it can feel. But you'll always be running. And sooner or later, time catches up with you. And time doesn't like to be ignored. The bill always comes due.

In a less hyperbolic explanation; I felt like it was wallowing too much in that, and forgot what it was. It didn't feel like it was just an escapist fantasy, it felt like this was the story G&C wanted to tell and not Erin's spiraling downward. Erin's issues and situation were only the vehicle to get to the Final Fantasy fanfic, which is what it feels like they REALLY wanted to tell.

Eh, the FF section looks like it is close to being wrapped up, and really there have not been very many strips added since EDA left the Escapist, so they really haven't been wallowing in it IMO. I think the series as a whole will go into a number of different games, and FF was just another stop on that road.

They were stuck in the same room in the same situation for months. They wallowed plenty.
