Hmm...well, i'm surprised to find myself actually kinda excited about this.

The recording gameplay footage in the PS3 feature sounds awesome, and there is definitely a market out there for that. No more fiddling around with extra software and hardware, yay!

Just reading through some of the specs...i'm curious about how much this is going to cost. Sure, it might look promising, but how much is it going to have to be priced at to make a profit?

Still...I will be following this, despite the fact that I have no intentions of buying , haha

Well they say that it'll only be $400. Nice compared to the PS3's $600

Ahh, thanks for the link, I must have missed that. I guess Sony have learned their lesson then, if it's turns out to be true.

We need more detailed specs to call that, however it basically sounds like a high end AMD CPU/GPU hybrid with lots of high speed ram. A smart move on their part I must say.
One can also hope they will continue their open platform as far as HDD's are concerned. I've had it with proprietary hardware.

Agreed, one of PS3s big plus points to me was its comparability with standard tech, no need to only get Sony headset, hard drive etc

I like the idea of being able to take over a friend's game. My friend can't do the Batman fighting medals to save his life, so I end up doing them for him. Problem is, we don't end up at each other's houses all that often. This would solve that problem, assuming I understand it correctly.
Three remaining things I want to know: Price point, does my account info (trophies and such) carry over, and can I play my old games on it. And I mean, put the disc in the system and play it that way.

It has almost always been about price ranges.

The future PS4 is worse in every aspect than what you could buy right now for around 4-5 k USD, however the specs seem nice enough and it will be competitive or maybe even better than mid range gaming PCs at it's release. That was not the case with the last generation, and I am really happy about the change, if a little dissapointed at how common the system seems tech wise.

More on topic, I guess you could be smug at release towards PC, as it should be better than most non enthustiast level systems.

Edit: At $400 bucks it seems like an awesome investment as long as you don't use your computer to work.

So far so good. What about backwards compatibility? Can I play San Andreas on it?
No backwards compatibility but Sony is developing a online shop for PS 1,2&3 games.

Developing as in not ready yet.

Diablo 3 on PS3 and PS4? When the Blizzard guy made that "take over the world" comment, I didn't really see that as being facetious. The 4 player co-op on one screen idea for Diablo 3 sounds like crazy fun, though.

According to Destructoid: "It will have 8GB of unified memory, a X86 CPU, 8 CPU cores, 2 teraflops computational performance, and a "Supercharged PC architecture."

How exactly do they plan to sell this thing at a profit? Are they planning on losing even more money in losses?

And before anyone quotes me on this, no, just because Sony stopped making a loss on production of the PS3 in 2010, that is not the same thing as being profitable. They burned through their entire PS2 warchest with the PS3, and that was a huge amount of money. They haven't even begun to recoup the losses they accrued this gen, and now they're going to try and sell yet more consoles at a loss?

Look away from the tech-porn and this isn't exactly good news for Sony. The Ps3 cost them money. The Vita is currently costing them money. They need to start turning an actual profit, not repeating the same business practises that have seen them go from $120 billion worth to $17 billion.

Sorry, I know this is going to be one of the sole cynical voices in amongst all the "WOOOH PS4 YEAH!" but this is not good for Sony. Financially, they're on the ropes. They need to get their shit together.
I think everyone is ignoring you as they circlejerk.
Quick question. Was that really called for?

You're not the only cynical voice. While it is nice tech-porn, they showed me nothing that makes me want to buy the console and unless we're looking at another $600-800 Playstation at launch, they're probably planning to lose money again. The software they showed didn't inspire much confidence on a strong launch line-up either.

Though, Sony's losses aren't entirely tied to their video game division. The gambled hard on huge screened, 3D TVs and lost.

What really let me down with the show is when they trotted out Square Enix.. the kings of the graphics whoring tech demo.. and all they show us is the same engine trailer we all saw back in the summer.

One thing I thought of relating to the console space...now matter how powerful the PS4 or its successors are, the resolution is always going to be limited to the 720p/1080p of HDTVs. On PC we already have 2560p on a single monitor, and much more with multi-monitor setups. I know it's not that big of a deal, but it just occurred to me that the HDTV is already a bottleneck. I'm pretty sure it's just now having some nice market saturation so I know we're probably not going to see higher resolution televisions coming anytime soon. Oculus Rift on consoles?

EDIT: That Ubisoft game where the dude hacked the city with his phone looked incredibly fun, with the kind of open world dicking around that I wished Assassin's Creed had. Yay circlejerking.

The conference started off rather well and just got gradually worse and worse.

The console itself actually looked great, but all the games aside from Knack looked completely uninteresting. And god damn that Move Music thing was hilariously terrible.

I really don't see how anyone can be all that hyped over this.

How in the hell do they intend on actually profiting from any of this? I mean as a Sony console fan I'm super psyched about all of this but they're in a bit of a tight financial bind and they sold the inferior PS3 at a loss at it's high launch price. I don't wanna see them go down the crapper...

Now its time for the optimism!
I am mildly excited by this but I'm not sold on it yet. I'll wait for more info.

Update 6: The PlayStation 4 will launch in Holiday 2013. Oh, and we never got to see the console itself.
They never really showed off a working PS3 console at E3 announcement in 2005. Rumor had it on the expo floor that the casing kept melting. Then again what they showed at the 2005 announcement was nothing more than 60% lies and pre-rendered footage.

Also, Adam Jensen is plain wrong. Current enthusiast cards have 4 GB DDR5, those on SLI will get the 8,
I just want to clarify that SLI/Crossfire setups don't double the amount of dedicated video memory you have. You always have the amount available that the lowest card has (if they don't have the same amount, otherwise you would have 4GB of VRAM available in your SLI scenario.)
