UPDATED: Pokémon X & Y News (Introducing Fairy Type)

According to Serebii (I'm not really able to watch the info session at the moment) it has been revealed that the inroduction of Sylveon has also brought along the introduction of a new type: fairy.

During the Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that Pokémon X & Y will include the new Fairy-type which includes Sylveon, Gardevoir, Jigglypuff and Marill. A new Pokémon was also revealed.
A new feature called Pokémon-amie allows you to interact with your Pokémon. Release date on October 12th worldwide

To be honest, I am not a fan of it and it is one of the only things I've kind of disliked throughout Pokémon's history (in saying that, though, there is always the chance I grow to like them). I guess I'm just kind of confused about why they chose to make fairy a type? I didn't believe they were going to add a new type but out of all of the rumors going around I was more of a fan of light or sound being added but oh well.

We also have an official release date of the 12th of October so only 4 months to go!

I will aim to add more info to the OP when I get a chance but as it is almost bed time it may have to wait a bit.

The big question I have for my fellow Pokémon fans is; how do you feel about the announcement of a new type?

A new gameplay trailer has also been released.


The trailer reveals Fairy type moves will be super effective against dragon types which is pretty cool that we get another type that is good against Dragons.

Pokémon-Amie is another new feature which allows you to bond with your Pokémon by doing things like patting it with the 3DS stylus or copying its facial actions (i.e. opening your mouth). I think this is pretty sweet though I know I'm going to get way to attached to my Pokémon now

A new trailer has been released and shows two more additions: sky battles and hordes.


Sky battles are, as the name suggests, are Pokémon battles in the sky. Only flying types and Pokémon with the levitate ability are able to battle in this mode.

Hordes are the possibility of facing 5 Pokémon at once in the wild. I'm not sure how this works but it seems pretty interesting and Serebii suggests they might not always be the same Pokémon.

The names of the other 3 new Pokémon have been revealed along with their types.

Some other smaller details have been revealed and this include:

- Rhyhorn is a rideable Pokémon.
- Riding different Pokémon can help in different areas.
- Single save file is still in.
- Backwards compatibility is being worked on.
- IVs and EVs will be more visible.
- You can choose between 7 languages to play in.

Serebii seems to have gotten some scans of the new CoroCoro magazine which reveals 4 more Pokémon, the names of the friends/rivals that appear in the game, the name of the starting town and one of the gym leaders.

The 4 Pokémon revealed are only know by their Japanese names at the moment and they are Kofukimushi, Kofuurai (Serebii suggests it's English name will be Spewpa), Shishiko and Furabebe. The first two are the pre-evolutions of Vivillon and Furabebe is another new Fairy type.

The town you start in is Asame Town and has three characters called Sana, Tieruno and Toroba. The game starts with you just moving to Asame Town and the other character, depending on the chosen gender by the player, is called Callum or Serena.

The gym leader revealed is called Viola and is a Bug type gym leader.

A new trailer has been released about 16 hours ago or so (somehow missed it). It doesn't reveal much but it came with the names of the 4 newest Pokémon. It is also shown that rollerblading is definitely possible. The English starting town is called Vaniville Town.

Currently, I'm not liking the Fairy type. Besides feeling that it's a bit late to be introducing a new type, it doesn't make much sense as a type, and you know that the Fairy type is just going to be filled with all the girly looking Pokemon. Who knows though? Maybe I'll like it once I get to play around with them a bit.

I wasn't too sure about fairy type, but if it means that Gardevoir may be more viable in the meta-game then I'm all for giving it a try. Gardevoir always was my favorite Psychic type. (Besides Mewtwo)

I'm also strangely drawn to the idea of petting my Pokemon and feeding them to make them happier. Also, I might enjoy the "copy your Pokemon's actions" thing a little too much to be healthy.

I'm okay with this though I still think Sylveon looks kind of dumb. Also this needs to be asked - why isn't Clefairy going to be a fairy type?!

Anyway, this might be too much to hope for but my secret wish is that the region of X & Y will be physically connected to Unova in some way so we can travel back and forth. Each of the post GSC regions has been an island (SORT of justifying the removal of inter-regional travel) until Unova and since this new game is also going with a Western cultural aesthetic it could hopefully be a sign that they might be neighboring regions?

They also said that with Pokemon Aime if you don't use it, or treat your Pokemon like shit, they will begin to disobey your orders. I guess they had to find some way to make the whole disobedience thing relevant again.

its about as interesting as anything else theyve done in recent games. granted there was never any real logic the pokemon types followed (normal? fighting? dragon? steel? none of them are normal, they all fight, wtfdragons, and steel is artificial, why not "metal" or "iron"?) but fairy is such a ridiculous choice it may very well be sarcastic. the very word is quintessential with non-aggression, annoyance, and fragility in western culture, and they are more or less free to interpret the original japanese idea however they please, and they settle on "fairy".

i was planning on this being the first pokemon game i dont get, and there is nothing yet to change that plan.

I'm fairly sure it will be, I think they only released a small list of Pokémon that will have the typing because it seems a bit silly to mention all of them, especially as you would want to make a few of them. There will possibly be around 20-30 maybe? I'm not sure how many of each type there are already but they would need to make enough to warrant the new type.

Other than Dragon type, it's mostly been stuff that somewhat makes sense. But what, exactly, is "fairy"? "Dragon" isn't as bad, they're tough, rare, borderline legendary without being actual unique legendaries, stuff that one could then tie in to dragons as a whole, regardless of the culture they come from. (Although the later gen ones are pretty bad.)
But... Fairy? Are they all going to be sparkly? Tiny? Glowy? Use none-physical attacks? Sit on toadstools? What is going to be the overriding "theme" or "feel" to this typing- or is it just going to be "OOSA CUTESY WOOOOO" and nothing more? (Well hey, look at Sylveon I guess.)

In short... I'm not best pleased. If it had made more sense I would probably go "ehhhn, we'll see how it plays out". Although if they're retroatively adding it onto older Pokemon, maybe I should just shut up and hope that some of the decent older ones are available. (The amount of times I've ranted about Gallade to my fiance makes me wonder how I still have one...)

Talk about jumping the gun. If there is a fairy type, it will probably just look like any other Pokemon. You look at any other type they have. Is every poison type based off of sludge. No. Is every normal type based off of animals. No. Settle down, take a deep breath.

Well, in Person 4 Pixie can be summoned to one-shot the entire party during the secret boss encounter, so I think I'll have to agree with you. Pixies are basically fairies, right?

I had this discussion with some friends and we kinda assumed that it's just another name for spirit or light type.
But yeah, fairy type? Personally I don't think the metagame needs balancing too much- dragon types tend to have their power coming from their awesome Base stats rather than their attacking type, which is more like non-elemental or almighty than an actual elemental affinity- hence why it has no strengths other than against other dragons. And the reason why they have such good base stats is because they're typically found towards the very end of the game and are hidden away in secret places (bagon could only be found on a 5% chance in a cave at the end of a long and annoying dungeon). Still, change is good, and the metagame has been getting a wee bit samey these past years.
