"Upgrading" the classics

Well today it dawned on me that most games that have a Keanu Reeves (Godly) like story are old and have horrible graphics. Now I IN NO WAY judge a game off of graphics, but anyone out there who loved the first Silent Hill would agree that if they were to give the game next-gen graphics but keep the game story line to line would be the greatest thing to ever happen. This is just me of course, the fact is that I feel that when a publisher makes a ton of equals its just to try and hit the aspects of an old game again. Why do that when people would be just as happy if they could play that game again only pimped out!

I really don't want to abuse the greatness of Silent Hill, but it's just a prime example. The game had a freaky as hell plot, most people don't realize this but the Silent Hill story line is in fact Bioshock times 10. People don't realize this because the Graphics of Silent Hill just didn't draw the insanity in enough and now that we have the ability to make good graphics publishers are raping the series by wasting the graphics on plots that seem to be missing the point of the series.

Sorry I really didn't want to repeat myself in this topic.. I'm not that social.. sorry.. To summarize, "Old games with upgrades in graphics would be better than new sequels of the old games".

I don't want to call you out as a Yahtzee fanboy, as I'm sure others have and or will with regards to your profile picture. Also from the fact that this matter was discussed in one of the more recent ZP videos (concerning Bionic Commando). Oh, and don't forget people calling out about the search button to pad their post count.

Anywho.

There are plenty of games that I would like to see upgraded graphically, such as Final Fantasy III (6). If the story remains intact I think it's a great idea. Sequels these days are the pits and a modern retelling of a classic game would be great in my opinion.

The horror genre is more or less dead, even a remake of Silent Hill 1 won't bring it back. In fact, it would probably be made worse. And since Silent Hill is now in the hands of an American developer, they wouldn't make an exact remake. They would change things (character names, combat engine, etc.) and then add stupid things for sheer fanbase hoping somebody will love them i.e: Pyramid Head (appeared both in the movie and in Homecoming..also a Pyramid Head wannabe was put in Origins).

Unless Silent Hill goes back to Team Silent in Japan, I won't be excited about another Silent Hill game.

NOTE: Not that I think Origins, the movie, and Homecoming were bad. They were pretty decent. But just don't compare to Silent Hills 1-4.

I liked it when I pre-ordered Wing Waker and it had another disc with a more difficult Ocarina of Time for free! I thought it was great but it had a shit load of glitches. So basically I reckon they bring back the old games (either comes free with squeal or cheap), and just make it alot more difficult!

Good idea?

A lot of people seem to want this for FFVII. I say, leave them as they are. When developing a game, at least these days with all the middleware and engines, the most time is probably spent on the resources: graphics, sound, music, etc. It's a bit of a risk to pump money into re-shinificating a game when you could use that to make something new.

Of course this is why I prefer having a more..open-source way of thinking, even with consoles. Look at the Black Mesa mod for Half Life 1 which is pretty much doing the exact thing the OP said.

I'm in favour of remaking old games, but generally only if the original is pretty much unplayable on modern machines. So things like System Shock or Descent could really do with a remake, given how hard they are to play these days.

Mr_Czar raises a good point with fan-made remakes, and I think this could be a good way of going about things. I just wish game companies agreed with me. It's almost impossible to count the number of fan-made projects that have been shot down because they 'infringed on copyright'. That 3D Chrono Trigger could have been awesome.

A related topic is fan-made updates and graphical overhauls, which companies tend to be more favourable to. Half-Life is a good example - I've pretty much replaced every weapon, NPC and enemy model with a fan-made one - but other games have benefited from fans as well. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is a brilliant example of the fans improving a game long after the developers have given up, and there are plenty of others. I for one am looking forward to the Deus Ex HDTP [http://offtopicproductions.com/hdtp/].

Why, exactly? It was an above average game and all the pretty graphics in the world aren't really gonna change that.

I like it a lot, ok? I would love to see it with PS3 level graphics. Some people liked FF6, some like FF8, I like FF7. So what?

If the developers change enough of it, and recreate it fully but also give people a new experiance (ie Resident Evil on the Gamecube) then I fully support it. But sadly most 'remakes' are just the same game with a new graphics engine made for a quick buck, a shame really since some games would benefit a lot from a remake and be introduced to a new generation of gamers.

Yeah, I found FFVII didn't have the lasting appeal I was hoping for. I'd like to see some more PSP anniversary editions, and perhaps a complete collection of I-VI all done with SNES-esque graphics. But other than that, I have to agree that unless you can't enjoy it in a modern context, leave it be. Oh, and maybe remake some games to bring back a few dead genres. I would love to see a space sim on the PS3/360.

It's just easy to pick on FF7 fans... ya' know, cuz theres like 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 of you. I liked it, it was ok. Just OK, not great. Not a huge fan of the whiney emo boy character...

I still think its actually a prequel to FF6. Like the stories totally synced up. Just me, maybe I'll share that whole theory on here someday...

Actually the PC version of FF7 has already had lots of mods done which change the graphics to much better. It is not PS3 level, but now the characters have fingers.

I personally wouldn't want remakes of FF6 or FF7 because it reminds me of better days. That being said I probably would buy the remakes though.. just cause.

So it's still recent enough and readily available to not warrant a remake. As zhoomout said:

I say no. It'll encourage the developers' laziness and we have enough samey games as it is.
Which I fully agree with. On the one hand I'd like to see an FF9 remake as I can't find it bloody anywhere. On the other hand, it'd do just the above and encourage retreading old games rather than writing fresh stories. Considering that stories are pretty much an integral part of the RPG genre, we should look for new things rather than remaking old ones, right?

I wouldn't like to see remakes but I would like to see updated versions of ps2 games with anti ailising. So many of my ps2 games are unplayable because they've got jaggies up the arse.

im going to Point out that bioshock was copying System Shock 2, who was designed by the same Company(hence the 'Shock' part of the title).
