I get the feeling a lot of UN members have wanted to get after Gadaffi since the 80's- were growing tired of forcibly smiling around him and trying to play nice. Especially with Lockerbie and all. We should remember that Gadaffi was the big bad dictator before Saddam came into the spotlight (hint: because he was our ally) That and the man has been in power for 4 decades- he's definitely had some opposition brewing against him.

Not saying that I'm in favor of all of this, though at the same time, this is how the UN is ideally supposed to operate when it comes to international incidents like this. Surprised that it's actually going down this way. We'll see if this will turn into another Kosovo or Bosnia. Maybe something will actually become of this before it escalates.

However I would still like the UN (and the US particularly) to at least denounce the turmoil and massacres in Bahrain and Yemen. Two nations that have either imposed Martial Law or States of Emergencies on their people and, apart from Libya, have been responsible for the largest majority of casualties in this wave of protests and strife in the MidEast/N.Africa.

Actually, the US will never do anything about Bahrain, not while our BFF Saudis are involved.

I don't see how Libya can possibly hope to win this. There are so many against them.
Why would you want the government of Libya to win? Just a question.
I don't want them to win, I just think its ridiculous that they don't surrender or anything, they have no chance.

I hope Gaddafi Wins in this conflict.
Can I infer as to why?
Well attacking your own civilians is not a big deal and the rest of the worlds countries should mind there own shit and even though Gaddafi is winning if the rebels win there will still be civil war and a power vacuum.
Are you serious?

I... don't even know how to respond to this.

As for the main topic... come on, we all saw it coming. With all luck, the jack-off in charge will see where this is going and apply for asylum out of country.

Until then, go, my Navy brethren, and drop explosives til the cows come home!

Even the USA kills its own people. It is just a difference in what each government sees as a crime.
How and when?
Death penalty.
That is nothing like what Gaddafi is doing, and you know it. He has been indiscriminately murdering his own people to keep all the power in his hands. The protests started peacefully, but got violent once he started up with this.

If you honestly want that asshole to stay in power, when the rebels could potentially create something other than a dictatorship that rules through fear, then I have nothing more to say to you, as you are a monster. Yes, I mean that. If you think he's justified, then you clearly have no regard for human life, and are a horrible person.

While it's kind of sad to see that this sort of situation is only fixed when it gets enough global attention, I'm glad something is being done. Yeah there are a lot more dictators out there, but that doesn't mean the world should just shrug and ignore it completely.

Quick question.

Right before I went to bed, the Old Media(here in the US) was going on and on about France destroying one truck with a bunch of fighter jets. Why was that such a big deal? I woke up and they were back to normal, but that first bit was really odd.

Normally they hate France. A lot. Like if the French ambassador said the sky was blue, they'd have a dissertation ready explaining that the sky is everything but blue because of reflection of various wavelengths of light or something.

I haven't read the entire thread but as a person living in th Mediterranean (Malta), I can tell you that regardless of what reasons the UN has decided to put a stop to Gaddafi, whether it be oil or actual human decency, I support it completely.

The man is insane, and he has always been insane much like every other fascist leader with a cult of personality. While he helped my country during the 60's with trade and has given us cheap oil in the past, the man has always spearheaded blackmailing every country around him and yelling out war at any time he might feel wronged.

Plus I think the UN needs to show that it still has some authority in these situations, otherwise we'll end up with another escalating war that could have been completely prevented just like the League of Nations before it.

They didn't act sooner because the rebels clearly stated they didn't want help from the rest of the world. This was obviously said as long as they we're winning... Once kadhafi started his little genocide plan they weren't as optimistic anymore.

The european union isn't going to do anything other than say a couple of strong words. It's probably gonna be up to the US, france and england. My country (belgium) offered help with F16's. But there is a joke about stuff like that in our country.

"you want us to send our airforce? Ok. Do you want the one or both F16's?"

If you didn't catch on. Our military ain't worth that much :).
At least your army has quite decent enough and up to date equipment. When they want the Irish Airforce they whip out the planes with propellors. Although the Irish army is supposed to be more for defense and peacekeeping and it's not like we have the money to spend on shit like that now.

OT: For all I know they could really be there because there is oil(I doubt it) but hopefully they at least save the local citizens there that aren't involved in the conflict.

Isn't this more of the U.K.'s war since they were the ones who got "terrorized". (for overwhelming lack of a better word.)

The title of this post disgusted me. It's war and death, not some sports event.
