Wisconsin technology company is offering its employees microchip implants that can be used to scan into the building and purchase food at work. Whether or not to get a chip is up to the employee to decide.

Three Square Market, a company that provides technology for break-room or micro markets, has over 50 employees who plan to have the devices implanted

Okay so I have to wonder who pays for their removal if the employees get fired/ no longer work there? What if 3rd parties create software to read/track their RFID numbers? What are they doing to prevent RFID hacking?

Although they have made RFID more difficult to hack than before in recent years, as most already knows, there is nothing that is completely unhackable, it just may take more effort to do so. As the technology to hack them becomes more widely available so will hacking. Will they have to keep updating the chips to prevent them from being hacked? Upgrading and repair would require removing and replacing the chips, how are they going to be able to guarantee this service in the event their employer goes out of business?

All these inquiries seem like they should be directed towards the company implementing the technology instead of a public internet forum that can only speculate about it - /2cents

You only need look upon the internet for examples of what happens when something is hacked
Like vibrators - (this is where I'd link a blog post where a user informs the company step-by-step of the vulnerability regarding their vibrator app but the informative blog post links to an adult site so darn)
End story - took months to "fix"

Just another step into the future combating the never ending struggle of security

Look out, it's the beginning of the mark of the beast!

"And the second beast required all people small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark"

I've often thought vending machines were the spawn of satan.

I feel the pay off isn't worth your stock standard security card and good old fashioned coins. I mean that's what I got to access various aspects of the R-Centre at uni, and what I use to buy Coke in the interior vending machines. Ease of use is a good thing. Being injected with capsules seems excessive. Call me when yu have an injectable chip thatcan let me remote use lab equipment from my bed. While I play more Zelda.

When I was a kid, Christians would go around claiming this sort of thing would happen and would be linked to the mark of the beast, guess they were some 20-30 years early.

Non adult site link for info on the vibrator hack:
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/aug/10/vibrator-phone-app-we-vibe-4-plus-bluetooth-hack
The difference of course is when something is hacked that is actually inside your body. I mean you can always just use a non hackable vibrator if that one gets hacked. You would have to cut the thing out of your skin to get it away from you if it is hacked. I am not sure why they are so hung up on putting these things in the body to begin with. Using a card or code isn't such an issue for it to be a problem.

I see no reason to put things into the human body that do not need to be there. Implants to save your life, improve your health and quality of life is one thing (aka neurostimulator, pacemaker, cochlear ect) but I am not seeing how this is necessary or even really improving quality of life, as most people do not have an issue keeping up with a card or code. Are people seriously so irresponsible they cannot be expected to keep up with a simple card or code they need to have something implanted into their body to do so?

Bananas are bad for you, so yes? Unlike Vanilla Coke.
LIES! Bananas are good for you. Anything in excess can be bad, but we have plenty of good reasons to eat bananas. :D

Ahh.. I stand corrected then. How did that rumour get started then, because I heard bananas were bad for you if you have a pretty shocking diet to begin with? Something about the sodium and potassium levels?

Sexual innuendo aside, mangoes are my crack. Then again mangoes are chock full of natural feel goods like serotonin boosting B6. Hard to be unhappy when you have a mango. Mango in everything. It's like Nature's antidepressants.

Or just use cocaine...

Honestly... the least U.S. companies can do for their workers is give thrm free fresh fruit. Chipping employees to use the vending machiine. As badly as I get paid at the R-Centre ... sometimes we get away with university charity who feed us excess foodstuffs at the local uni-run bar/restaurant. We used to steal food until they gave us discounts.

We still steal food. You leave a carton of anything unattended, we'll pocket that shit. Old computers, boxes of lemonade, 20 packs of biros, pallet of pasteurised long life milk. Nothing is safe. Wealth distribution to the multiply educated poor! Actually... I'm personally pretty well off, I'll still steal food and booze. I think I have a problem... because stolen food even tastes better.

If a company or the uni insisted on chipping me so I could buy stuff in their company/the centre at yet another profit ontop... the temptation to steal more would simply grow. I'm not sure I can survive out in the wild anymore. Private sector seems cold and depressing with this news.

I see where this is going. This is one of those 'completely voluntary' things that companies do, right? I've read enough science fiction to know how this one turns out.

See, I'm a transhumanist and I love blending man and machine stuff but I'm also all too aware of the negative consequences that could arise from it or where it could ultimately lead.
Like my own country, almost forcing everyone to move away from physical cash to identity bound cards.
Computer leaks and weak security being what it is (I take it you've heard of the Sweden governments latest IT blunder), coupled with peoples greed and ill intent, is a recipe for disaster and big brother mentality.

If people were to have their own overriding codes, a private key and a public key for example, different encrypted layers and autonomous use then I would not have such qualms concerning it.
I'm no expert but you get my drift at least, I hope.

Right now it's kind of a messy situation so I'm going to hold off on a final judgement.

( Is it just my imagination or has WW infiltrated this off-topic thread..more than usual?? )

I'm actually kind of torn on this one. I don't have any problem specifically with implant technology. The bulk of the reaction against implants seems to be some kind of religious nonsense. So siding with that crowd is pretty stupid. On the other hand, I don't really see the point. I already carry an rfid chip that lets me in the doors of my company. Vending machines aren't impossible to operate without an implant.

So, I guess it would have to be more useful than just a work key. If I could program it with installable apps that allowed it to be used for a multitude of functions... that might be worth it. Like if it could be programed to be my car key, all my computer passwords, my google wallet, a bitcoin wallet, all of my retailers loyalty discount cards, a debit card, a credit card, paypal access... and anything else I wanted it to be plus biometrically linked to my dna meaning it would only do these things for me... and I have to be alive for it to function... I'd be in line to get one. Otherwise a wallet full of cards that do these things will do just fine.

The thing is, the more data you put on it, the more hackers will put forth the effort to target it. It is more secure to keep all those things separate than put them in one spot. Being able to just hack one place to get all that info makes it the most attractive target. The reality we have found with all our tech is that as soon as we upgrade, the quicker criminals upgrade. Even biometrically linking something is not going to ensure it will be secure. They could hack a device to make it think it is still biometrically linked when it is not, they can spoof the data... One thing we have come to understand through all of our trial and error up til now is there is no such thing as "secure". Secure is just a matter of someone writing new code faster than someone else decodes it and reprograms it.

Well that is highly unnecessary. What advantages does it have over something you can choose to put down whenever you want? A wage bonus? A medical insurance bonus? Because I'd need a hell of a bribe before my initial response changes from 'fuck off!' to 'i need a lot more information and this is still invasive and stupid.'
See, employees are like pets now. Very obedient pets. Sometimes. In case they get themselves lost, it's best we have the means to track them down. [small]For sport!![/small]

Beat me to it. Though Social Insurance numbers also seem to fill that role. No money without a job or credit, no job or credit without a Social.

OT I'd quit. Fuck any company that wants to perform surgery on me as a prerequisite for working there.
