usage of grenades in multiplayer games

I played some vanilla cod today with the hopes to have some oldschool fun. Cause there aren't many servers left i joined a 30/64 player server, the first mistake i made today.. the second i joined a team nades started exploding next to me. The next 20 or so minutes i found myself constantly dodging and running from nades. And this brings me to my point.

I noticed that any multiplayer game with a large amount of players that have acces to grenades soon turns into a nade spamming contest and takes away, at least for me, a lot of the fun of playing online with large numbers of people.

So what do you think, would online play improve if there were less or no grenades available for players?

Not really it wouldn't really fix the issues with multiplayer cod they'd replace the grenades with another weapon irritating for a different reason.

If they're very effective, much more so than any other weapon, you'd be a fool not to use them. Play to win. That's the typical online gamer mentality.

I can clearly see that excessive use of grenades is effective in online games, but that doesn't mean that your first reaction whenever you see another player is to hurl anything on your person that is round.

Whenever I've played Halo 3 (something I have stopped doing now for this very reason) I useually encounter a situation where I'll go into a room to grab a weapon/ammo and recharge my shields only to find that someone has followed me and proceeds to place between 4 and 6 grenades in the room with me. Obviously this kills me and I later fall victim to this trick again because it didn't occur to me that I drop all of my grenades upon death.

Another favorite is when you know someone is waiting around a corner with a shotgun (something that has become a 1-hit kill these days), most people are hesitant about going in in this situation and one of two things will happen 1. they hurl all their grenades into the room to eliminate the shotgun weilding guy or 2. the shotty guy becomes bored and hurls all their grenades at the person they were hoping to jump out at.

Another painful part of the use of grenades is the fact that many games now feature sticky grenades (or sticky bombs of some variety), these useually find themselves employed unrealistically as an assassination tool or an alternate method of melee.

Remembering the fact that you can't remove them and they are always fatal...this get irritating after the 27th time.

I've also grown to dislike weapons that have a grenade launcher as a secondary fire since you can be certain that most people will use that and completly forget what the weapon is supposed to be used for, example: in Turok most people seem to forget that the flamethrower can in fact send out a stream of flame since they are far too busy shooting napalm grenades at you.

Well, I think Halo 3 does a good job limiting grenade spam. It allows players to carry only four grenades (on most maps) and the maps leave few places to throw grenades in any given place.

It's irritating if they're too powerful and the blast radius is too big. Otherwise I think they're fine.

Grenade Launchers suck in Crysis' Power Struggle. Hell, from the vehicles only jeeps are damaged by them so it's like the devs put that in to say "fuck you" to gamers. Though it's fun to use it as a mortar from the base. Heh, I managed to hit one sniper.

Hell no...it's fun to lob grenades at other players. However, I do see your point-blast radii get too big when you have many people in one space. I guess you would have to fix that by agreeing to rules before you play, maybe?

The only game I actually play online is Half-Life 2 and people have a habit of dropping a grenade then picking it up with the gravity gun, and letting it cook for a few seconds and then firing it at someone for an instant explosion.

Its annoying when I run into a room and before I even realise what is happening i'm ragdollised by an instantly exploding grenade from some guy at the other end. But I view it the same way as all the other multiplayer pet peeves people have.

If you weren't supposed to do it then there would be something implemented into the game to stop it from happening. Otherwise its a perfectly legitimate tactic and however annoying people find it they're not doing anything wrong.

The same goes for spawn killers and campers and the like, they're not doing anything wrong because the game gives you plenty of opportunities to do both. If you shouldn't spawn kill then there would be built-in spawn protection for a few seconds when someone spawns. If you shouldn't camp then there wouldn't be any camping spots and no weapons that are good for long range.

All players should do whatever they like within the rules of the game they're playing, I think. Its only when people cheat in multiplayer, bending the rules of the game while others cannot, that they're in the wrong.

So what I mean is, if you find something annoying then its fine, but the players doing it arent in the wrong - Its the game mechanics that are annoying you and not the players. I dont mean anyone here in particular (tc guy or anyone else in this thread) but I dont like seeing comments in multiplayer insulting players who are playing completely within the rules of the game. Thats really annoying to me.

I sometimes , when i get angry and have lots of money , start spamming with grenades in cs.
The way to do that is to stay in youre base and when you have a hint that someone is comming throw nades' then press f2(shortcut for quickbuy the last thing you had ) and Boom , almost unlimited HE grenades:-D

Team Fortress 2 proves conclusively that the answer to this question is a resounding Hell Yes.

Not really conclusive is it given the fact that TF2 sucks
Let me guess... you 'tarded out and bought it for a console didn't you?

If you can't stand the high explosives, stay out of the battlefield. It's a legitamate weapon, though spamming grenades is cheap.
I suppose this means that you whole-heartedly support the use of grenade launchers?

If you bought the console version, then you have my sympathy.

Anyway, I think people having too many (or access to refils for) grenades can imbalance a game, or just turn it into a pointless spawn frag.
I think DoD:S has it about right where nobody spawns with more than 2 grenades, then can't get anymore until their next spawn.
It adds a layer of strategy, do you hang back while they nade spam, knowing full well they're using the time to set up defensive positions, or rush forward and risk hi-explosive death?

Incidentally, the answer is always rush, blast 'em while they don't have a gun in their hands!

Nade spam is annoying yes, but not as annoying as having no nades at all, like in TF2.

A spy, with no nades? fuck off!

COD4 has that big probelm with 2 many nades....with 2 specific maps...the "training" level (i have no idea what the names of them are) and the boat level.....I just quit out any time those 2 levels are played!!!

I think battlefield 2142 had a good range of explosives! that game has to have some of the most well thought out explosives, but that is just IMO..... i think games like COD4, the maps are 2 small....small maps = more intense play...but also more grenade spam >.<
