I think I'd of liked him if you COULD pursue conversation with him. His side-quest was good, but other than that there was no interaction. Never used him either.

Actually Cait Sith was integral to the plot in FFVII... XD Though still I never used him in combat. Too annoying.

It doesn't really count as an RPG, but I'd have to say that everyone other than Osmond is utterly useless, or would be if Level-5 didn't force you to use them.

Mass Effect 2 has so many characters that they can't all be useful mechanics wise. Legion for example was almost the exact same as Tali mechanics wise. The real difference being Sniper vs Shotgun.
Actually, I'd argue that ALL the characters in Mass Effect 2 are useful (except maybe Jacob and Tali), it's just a matter of picking the right ones. Some are overall better (like Miranda, Samara, Garrus, Thane and Legion), but all have their place.

Zaeed did feel a bit tacked on, I agree. However, he does have some fun stories to tell if you talk to him, so it's more like him being the only party member who doesn't want to be your pest friend, but rather do his job and be gone.

It's a given that in RPGs with a large cast there will be like maybe 4 people you will use throughout the entire game.

I can't think of any at the moment, except for the Dog in Dragon Age. He was a decent damage dealer, but far outshined by Allistair, Sten, Shale, Oghren and potentially your own character.

Still he was the most fun to talk to.
Actually, it's not a given. I tend to rotate all available characters for variety's sake, unless the game penalizes me for it (Baldur's Gate 2 comes to mind). That way I don't feel like I picked up some of my party for no reason.

As for Dog, Overwhelm is one of the most overpowered abilities in the game, and the AoE stun is quite helpful, as are several other abilities he has. I thoroughly disagree with you that he's outshined by others. In fact, Sten and Oghren are the weakest melee spec in the game (Two Handed Weapons) and bring nothing special to the table, while Dog has a whole array of unique moves.

I would say Ramus from LUNAR: Silver Star Story, but I'm not sure he counts since he's only in the party until after the first/second(depending on what verion you're playing) boss.
Ramus was awesome. I recall a playthrough of that bad boy where I power-levelled the characters.

At about level 8, after all the others get their ability ups with their level:

"Ramus gained a level!" *pause*

That was it. NOTHING HAPPENED. No ability increases or anything. Best level up EVER.

Hard to say. I'm one of those people who deliberately tries to use everyone, and I have to say it's usually worked for me.

Closest I've ever come to the opposite would be in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, but I wouldn't call all the late-joining characters "useless." I simply didn't need them, because I flat-out refused to let any of my early units get killed.

And not just for gameplay reasons. Their death lines can be fuggin' tragic. Rhys and Rolf even made my eyes water in guilt.
Letting Rolf die SHOULD make your eyes water. *glare* He's just a little boy!

The main character in Dragon Age is totally useless and doesn't even feel like a main character.
I totally agree. This really took a lot of the joy out of the game for me...

Your character in White Knight Chronicles. Everyone else at least felt like they had some emotion or purpose. You did NOTHING cinematically or story-related.

Shning Force was brilliant for useless characters. Throughout the game new characters would be constantly added to the party, most of which were a far lower level than your party and added nothing to the story. Some of them even looked the same as your other characters just with a different hair colour.

After getting Aigis, Koromaru, and Ken in Persona 3, I never again used Junpei, Mitsuru, or Akihiko.

though they are not "useless" characters, at one point they become useless characters, due to me using the Bufu (ice) magic, Koromaru using Agi, Ken using Hama (lightning), and Yukari healing.
Heh, on the contrary, I never used Ken, Koromaru or Aigis once, always used Mitsuru, Yukari and Akihiko. Koromaru didn't really have much of a purpose in the original Persona 3. In FES they allowed him to help your social links mind.

FFVII -
Yuffie. I mean, you can go through the entire game without getting her if you wish, and she doesn't really play a big part in the game.
Cait Sith. Didn't really have very good attacks, didn't have anything much to say.. He was linked into the plot being a spy and all, and then helping you. But they could of easily shoved that onto another character and he wouldn't be missed.
FFVIII -
Didn't really think any of the characters were "tacked on", but that said I never once used Selphie because she had meh attacks, in my opinion.
FFIX -
Quina. Attacks weren't very good, and again, didn't say much. Wasn't really connected to the plot either. He just joined the group to taste food..
FFX -
Kimahri probably, he was connected to the plot fair enough. But as far as his skills go, he's just a weaker version of someone else depending on what path you take him down, as his own sphere grid path is very short.
FFXII -
Vann and Penelo. Annoying and useless, completely unconnected to the plot, felt like they were tagging a long because they felt like it.

Agreed with most of the Suikoden characters being rather useless. 108 characters recruit, obviously not all of them are going to be gold standard.

Gotta agree that the NPC characters in Mass Effect 2 is less than awesome when it comes to use. I have beaten the game three times already, and find myself returning to Grunt for all purpose fighting and damage-soaking (having TWICE the HP as any other character through two piss-easy upgrades, and the best shotgun basically for free makes him "slightly" better than the rest of the rabble), and Miranda for her Shield/Barrier-killing powers and party boosts, substituted with Garrus when I played an Adept.

Dragon Age's NPCs are a mixed bag. My biggest beef is that I find you get a much "better" party by having the three main goody two-shoe characters (Alistair as Tank, Liliana covering ranged damage, locks and traps, and Wynne as the healer/controller) than making a party of "evil" characters. Unless you play a healer yourself, you have no competent alternative for Wynne until lv14, and then you are over half-way through. And there is no other shield-fighter in the game to make as good a tank as Alistair. Shale works, but he comes with a price-tag. My "evil" play-through was hard as hell due to this. Almost had to scale back the difficulty on the big dragons.

Oh, I can go to town on this one. Cait Sith and Yuffie from Final Fantasy 7 automatically spring to mind, what a useless pair they are, and one of them is a secret character. Kimahri from Final Fantasy 10 was pretty naff too. From what I recall, Gau, Gogo and Mog from Final Fantasy 6 weren't brilliant either.

It's not just Square-Enix games though, Bioware's Baldur's Gate series had some immensely pointless characters. One word: Tiax. Oh yeah, and there was also Xzar, Montaron, Garrick and Quayle. I love Bioware and all, but seriously, I wish they wouldn't create pointless characters for the sake of numbers.

Obsidian didn't do much better. Grobnar and Elanee I found to be utterly useless in Neverwinter Nights 2. In fact, Grobnar was more of an annoyance than a companion.

I'm sure I could think of more, but not off the top of my head...

EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER IN FABLE 2. Apart from the black magic guy(don't remember his name), steven fry and the dog.
