Many games have useless weapons and the question comes to mind, whats the point?
The two biggest offenders i can think of are DMC and Ninja Gaiden(xbox)
In Ninja gaiden you have shuriken which dont do Jack shit, and in DMC Dantes dual pistols may as well be shooting peas.
SO escapists whats the point of these useless weapons in games? and what games have you come across that have useless weapons in?

Game designers think that they add balance. That is only if people actually use them though!

My vote goes to the Intervetion on MW2. Why would you use that when the Barret is unlocked from the get go too and is a better weapon all round? yes, yes, I know that some pople prefer the Intervention, but you have to admit, you are in a minority.

I don't think there has been a single weapon that doesn't have at least some use in some situation.

*Looks at a .32 from both Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines and Fallout 3*

Yep... Not a single weapon from a SINGLE game is useless.

The DMC-pistols are great for staying in a combo, therefore they are not useless at all.

And shurikens, while weak, can serve the purpose of interrupting a guy with a projectile about to fire at you.

OT: Tactical Nuke in Modern Warfare 2.

It's useless because it destroys the purpose of the game. I mean sure, there are good chances that the team that gets a tactical nuke are the superior team, but what if I'm on that team, having a blast, and a fucking nuke comes along? I get sad!

Actually, it's most kids who think the Barret is the best, more mature people like the Intervention much much more
Wait a second, that sounded like a dig.

The intervention sucks on anyone that isn't standing still, doesn't always one shot kill even in the head and has a terrible fire rate. How is it better?

A lot of it for me has got to do with the aesthetics and feel, such as the Type 99 in COD:World at War, I couldn't get the hang of using that because of the big fuck off magazine (I think it was a magazine, I'm not sure) that spoiled the view.

Same goes with the UMP on MW2, it just doesn't feel right to me. Any gun that doesn't look right or feel right I can never get the hang of properly.

One useless weapon that I can think of though is the Sawn-off shotgun in Fallout 3, never does the damage you'd think, even at point-blank ranges.

Also, I think every weapon in an online shooter needs it's own perks, such as an assault rifle with high accuracy but lesser damage, potentially balances out another assault rifle with high damage and poor accuracy. Why have weapons that are piss-weak altogether?

The standard starting pistol in every military FPS ever.

Edit:Most def agree on the sawn-off from Fallout 3. I would also add the chinese pistol from that game, although the reload animation is cool.

Not really a weapon but peasants in the total war games. They will likely run away before even killing anything. They aren't even useful in the campaign because of mercenaries.

the bb gun in fall out 3 i thought i would try to be smart so i sunck up on a raider with max out skills in everything and shot a bloat fly with a sneak attack crit and it did such a minute amount of damage i had to switch to the starting weapon they give you in the tutorial and finish it off with a 10 mm bullet

in total war peasants are pretty useful in bigger cities because they have such a high unit count for their price so they make a cost effective way of keeping public order

the M9 in COD4. sure it has 15 rounds, but it takes like half of that to make someones screen flash red, and it has a silly long reload compared to the USP or Deagle. plus the damm thing is noisy as hell.

also, the W1200 from the same game. the buckshots dissappear after 2 meters or so, its incredibly random on whether it´ll hit the enemy or not, and you can get killed by an AK whore before your done pumping a shot out.

Personally I enjoy DMCs Ebony and Ivory, and I'm sure the help combos a long since most of the gameplay is just that. As for them in general, who knows...maybe they are there for a challenge to the player...I certainly would like to try killing Goliath with a pea instead of a pebble.

Fallout 3's .32 pistol does it for me.

Not only do you get a far superior pistol in the tutorial level, it also drains up ammo that could be used in Ol' Painless.

No thankyou.

Also the plain Assault Rifle; the only reason you should be using that is if A) your Chinese Assault Rifle is broken, or B) You don't have a Chinese Assault Rifle.

About any of those "Level X Death" spells that crop up in Final Fantasy games. By the time I know them, the only enemies they're useful and effective on are ones I can kill in one hit. What's the point of wasting mana on that?

mw2 in general added a bunch of worthless weapons. 32 pistol in fallout 3 though. that is just plain awful.
