I still to this day don't understand why people think that the problem about using a cell phone while driving his holding the phone, hence the hand free laws, but its not I drive a standard meaning most of the time I drive with one hand any way. So why is driving while holding a phone now a problem. I see the problem being the fact you are having a conversation and not paying attention while you drive. this just seems obvious to me and everyone I talk to, so why is it hands free is the legal solution> what did this solve?

Go watch the Mythbuster's episode about driving with a cell phone. You'll understand.

Most people are easily distracted, especially when doing something they don't enjoy. If it's not a phone they'll just find something else to distract them.

U have scene and that's what I base my argument on its not that you hold your hold its that you us your phone so why did hands free laws come into existences as a solution to this problem

well when i look at my phone to try and find a stored number i have to take my eyes off the road. If someone calls you then you need to pull your phone out your pocket which could involve moving around or standing a little while seated depending on the type of pants. Once the phone is out you look at the screen to see who it is then you have to flip the phone open or press the talk button. In this time the guy in front of you could slam on his breaks, a person could pull out in front of you and you don't even see them, or you could not see that upcoming sharp turn until its to late.

I see why people get into accidents while using a cell thats why i try and avoid using my cell while driving as much as possible.

Edit: oh hands free, ok well i heard a statistic while in driving school, for my driving accident, that the teacher there told us that talking on a hands free can cause almost as many accidents as a hand held phone.

Because it's common sense. You use your hands to drive. So use them. Quit distracting them away from the wheel.

I believe in California that it's illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving, but you can still text. Not sure how that works out.
That would be pretty stupid, seeing as you actually have to *look* at the phone for texting as well.

Some posters are missing the point, the poster was saying that talking on the phone is a distraction and increases your chances for an accident.

Whether you're holding the phone or not doesn't isn't the important part, so hands free devices hardly seem to address the problem of distracted drivers.

it's because lawmakers are stupid, and also because the next logical step after banning phone conversations is banning all conversation in vehicles and no one would be willing to enforce that.

Yeah, people are stupid. The two possible problems with using a cell phone are that a) it takes a hand away from the steering wheel or b) the talking distracts you.

However, regarding the first problem, it isn't illegal to use your other hand for other things, so why would a cell phone be more dangerous than holding anything else? And in the case of the latter problem, if they think talking really is a problem, it should be illegal to talk to other people in your car. Again, why is talking into a cell phone more dangerous than other types of talking?

And here in New York it is also illegal to use a cell phone while driving but you can text, which is also stupid since if anything texting should be the illegal act.

I don't do it. I pull off the road to talk, or don't answer it until I can find a place to park and call back.
I've come in too many close-call-crashes to talk whilst driving. Pardon the pun.

Nah. You don't have to look at your phone to text. When I was living in Japan, I would text in both English and Japanese while riding my bicycle. There's no way I could have done that if I had to look at my phone. Also, it is illegal to text and drive in California.

The main problem is texting. Instead of just holding your phone to your head while talking your pressing buttons and looking at your phone.

This. I mean, jesus christ, you might as well say "I drive with one hand anyway, so why can't I masturbate while driving?"

My point I drive with one hand I have a standard transmission so I have to drive only using one hand on the wheel, Its been like that since the advent of the cars, now all of a sudden HOLDING a phone is why people are getting in accidents while driving is the problem. I say no its the conversation or the other distraction you mentioned that's the problem so why not ban the use of phones while driving instead the holding of phones. That is what I don't understand

i drive an automatic, and it's not such a big deal to talk on the phone while i drive. never had any close calls or anything because of it...

maybe i'm just talented.

i think texting is worse. or just plain bad drivers. and drunk drivers. they suck.
