I have to wonder how incredibly sheltered your life has been if you're irritated by bad grammar on a forum.

I use proper grammar at all times. Granted, what I type may only be correct according to the rules of informal grammar, but I use proper grammar nonetheless.

I don't see any point in using proper spelling and grammar in this type of situation. The purpose of language is to convey ideas, therefore if my spelling and grammar are good enough to do that, they are as good as they need to be.

I think we all get a little bit irritated when people will be incredibly lazy in their typing and revert to what I call "text talk". Sure it's nothing to bring a crusade about but still it does make you look a little lazy and uneducated if you can't bring yourself to type properly.

OT however, I find the Escapist a pinnacle of eloquent grammar and proper spelling, if not an example to the rest of the internet community on how to properly debate without resorting to name calling and childish mannerisms. Now THAT is irritating.

But as I said before, there's no point in really picking apart people's opinions and notions if they happen to make the odd type and/or misplaced an apostrophe or three. If you made your point in fairly intelligible English and didn't stoop to aforementioned insults then go ahead and cry your heart out on something you feel passionate about

I do my best, but there are some rules about which nobody seems to care. For instance, the split infinitive is used often.

EDIT: I am glad that people see the irony behind my title.
Not just the title, but your whole post.

And, well, to answer your question, I do try to use correct grammar all the time. I mean, people say "that's what school is for", but that's retarded. No, it's not just for school. That's the fucking point of school. The point of school isn't to go there, and do shit only there for the purpose of boring the shit out of yourself. It's to help you fare better in life, love and l--l...loss?

Aaaaanyway, I try to use correct grammar to improve my knowledge of grammar and the ingrained sense of right and wrong concerning all things grammatical all the time, because I want my English to get better and better, bit by bit. But the thing is that on the internet, people do not always use correct grammar, and thus often-times incorrect grammatical rules may nest inside my head, or sometimes there just aren't instances where certain grammatical rules are employed to make me aware of them.

No rule states the split infinitive is incorrect. And it's debatable if it's even in bad style.

I can read "txt spk" just fine. My first thought is usually "they can't be bothered" which is fair enough. I cannot stand people who dismiss or outright insult a person or their viewpoint because of a few mistyped words and I've reserved a special place in hell for people who's sole reason of posting is to correct an error. If you have nothing to contribute GTFO.

Oh yeah I agree fully. Having a real pop at somebody and proceeding to pick apart their errors is just wrong. It's a waste of time when you can't bring yourself to contribute to the topic in hand and just victimise somebody. I won't ever stoop to doing that either :)

On forums I use proper grammar, because I find reading poor grammar really irriating to read and to understand. The only times I would drop my grammar is when I'm sending quick text to my buddies.

I maintain as good as I can spelling and grammar when I correct others for laughs, when I'm on a site like the Escapist or when constructing a point I believe in or know for a fact it is true, but on sites like Youtube and 4Chan, IM services and in games I just write as fast as possible.

I always use proper grammar. From texts to IMs to posting on message boards, I hardly ever shorten words. I am a big advocate of emoticons, but I don't think those count. I just don't see the point of all the netspeak abbreviations. It would take you about three more seconds to actually type out the words.

I'm replying to someone in a conversation, I'm not writing an English essay. I don't always use perfect grammar but most of the time I just naturally write properly because I'm used to it.

What gets me really annoyed on this subject is when people think that their better grammar makes them automatically win any argument. No matter how bad someone's grammar is, its the content and meaning of what they write and not the language itself.

Hypercorrection of the word "whom" really gets to me for some reason. This forum is pretty bad with it. I know it's a somewhat obscure rule that can be tricky, but the hypercorrection bothers me a lot more than a simple misuse of the word "who". I guess it's because, as I think about it, hypercorrectors know of the rule and want to avoid breaking it so bad that they break it. It just comes off as a bit pretentious and insecure.

I use proper Grammar most of the time, aside from abbreviating some phrases in games and messaging programs.

The merest notion of disgracing myself by utilizing the sub-literate effluent that is "text-speak" causes an involuntary shudder. I look at internet shorthand and I see the death of my revered English language at hand - there is no part of that prospect that I do not find horrifying, and I am routinely disgusted by the grammatical atrocities internet posters perpetuate against their (ostensible, though given they invariably appear to be just shy of functionally illiterate this is up for debate) written language.

There are no exceptions: either you type correctly, or you simply shouldn't type at all. The medium matters not a whit - whether you are contributing via a comment or forum where there is an element of permanence, or whether you are writing in the rapid-fire dialog of instant messaging or other forms of chat, you should bloody well properly capitalize, spell and punctuate the things you write. It turns out if you actually know how to type, it isn't even particularly time consuming (shocking)! I can certainly manage to communicate at speed via in-game chat interfaces in the MMOs that I've played without compromising on this point, so if you can't then the problem is clearly that you suck at typing (or you know how to type correctly but do not because you are lazy, in which case you disgust me even more).

No matter what your (completely invalid) excuse for typing like a moron might be, the one thing you can always count on is that typing anything other than stringently proper English does in fact make you look like a moron. If that is something you can live with, then we can never ever be friends.
