The more popular boards, like /v/, are overrun with idiots who fall for any troll and buy into any fad, hence why there is hardly any vidya-related discussion on there, and it just becomes more of a train wreck every day. Personally I think anonymity stimulates the best forms of discussion, but it seems that many people are too immature or too easily offended to use it properly.

I lurk on /v/ but only cause once in a blue moon something note worthy will pop up. They tend to be on top of any new trailers put out and what not. Apart from that, I don't participate. /v/ is overrun with 14 year olds that don't know shit about video games.

The Escapist is ridden through and through with a hideous amount of elitism, and at no point is it more pronounced than when 4chan is mentioned.

The entire fucking place is far more influencial, productive, and important to Internet culture than this site may ever be. Don't get me wrong, I adore the Escapist, but 4chan is pretty much an entire online city, alive with activity and a vast amount of varying communities sharing different interests.

People don't realise, but 4chan has boards for anime, toys, even travel! Over 3/4 of the site is safe for work.

People merely develop harsh views of the place because they've heard the harsh views from other people who haven't spent much/any time there, who've gained their opinion off others, who've gained their opinion off of some Fox news broadcast of the dangers and nastiness of Anonomous. The scale of ignorance here often annoys me, and the sheer elitism just takes it that bit further.

OT: I'll occasionally take a browse through /v/ when I'm looking for game related content and things aren't moving too fast here. Other than that I spend my time on /b/, sometimes /r9k/, and maybe /mu/ or /g/.

Having even a quarter of the site not being safe for work is enough to absolutely render it open to invective. If you're not good enough at policing your site to avoid idiots crawling in and taking over, you deserve all of the hatred that you get.
I mean that a quarter of it is the specified NSFW area, this includes different boards for porn (sexy women, hentai, yuri, etc) and of course /b/.

This is exactly the ignorance that I'm talking about.
