I feel the whole valedictorian thing is uninspiring and meant for only a few students would bide for the top spot (fiercely that is) but theres many more that just dont care.
So how about this
at the end of the year the worst passing student "wins", has to dress up in a costume, and has to give a speech to the entire student body about their failure in a stand-up esque bit.
Now would there be someone who would want this anyway, yes, but at least it would be more interesting but there will be plenty more of those who wouldnt and it would inspire others along the lines of "well if he can pass.".

The valedictorian is usually an asshat anyway, intelligence isn't measured by grades, those who think so aren't intelligent.

OT: I don't think that would work, considering the guy at the bottom is most likely an asshat as well, and will most likely be too lazy to do the speech.

Yeah, from a strict ability prospect, I was WAY smarter than the valedictorian in my class but I had no motivation and little capacity for bullshit(otherwise known as home work).

On homework, they always said oh, this is preparing you to get a job. Well most jobs you fucking get once you go home you don't have to do it anymore.

The valedictorian spot is good for those top few. They're competing, the school is doing its job very well. Of course most people would be wiped out after the first term freshman year, that's the whole point.

The concept might be outdated, especially with the overly broad range of subjects that schools teach now. I know I was a fucking master at the social sciences in general in my high school, but I didn't make valedictorian because I screwed up a few classes - E&M Physics, Foreign Language, Classical Literature, even O-Chem were required for all students. Interestingly enough, my high school's valedictorian got rejected from MIT and had to settle for Columbia, while 6 other students got into MIT (and a shitton of people got into Harvard, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, the like). In my opinion, they should change the salutatorian position to a vote for one of the top students, a mix of eloquence and intelligence. It would certainly be more interesting.
