I love music for the fact that it fills the void of silence. Sometimes, you don't want everything to be quiet. Plus, it's nice to tap or hum along to the song.

Well music is everything to me. It comforts you when you're sad, it makes you feel excited, fills you with adrenaline, brings all your emotions (anger, glee, hope, sorrow) to the surface and just makes you feel alive!
How can you listen to the raw power of bands like Fucked Up, Cancer Bats and Gallows and not feel this surge of excitement?!
How can you listen to Springsteen and not marvel at the power behind his lyrics?!
How can you listen to The Clash and not wish with all your heart that you could have been there to experience them and the world they lived in first hand?!
...I could go on but you get the point.
When I meet someone (and I have some close friends like this) who doesn't have the same level of excitement towards music as I do, I fail to understand them as a person. It's like they're dead inside! How can you feel anything if you can't be moved by the persuasion of Bad Religion, the beautiful lyrics and sexy time signatures of Every Time I Die or the sheer anger of Converge?!
Music is everything to me and, in my opinion, it should be everything to everyone.

For me, a lot of the music I listen to that has lyrics is all about taking all these ideas we have that people can relate to and sharing them. Sometimes ideas are better expressed through music than just normal speech.

I have very strict taste when it comes to music. I basically only care about the melody, unless the lyrics are clever which 95% of them aren't (to me), so quite a bit of my 200ish song library is video game soundtracks. The lyrics I do enjoy are mostly humorous ones, because anyone can write something about depression or teenage love or something that sounds profound, but it takes more talent to write good comedy. That's why every teenager ever has tried to write dramatic songs, because it's easy. But I won't get too far into that.
And if it doesn't have a good melody, I don't care either way. Which is something that's very hard to find these days.

Music is amazing. The only music that i have a lot of trouble getting into is top 20 music at the moment.
Music is a way of expressing yourself, it is a beautiful art form which can be enjoyed in so many ways, it also enhances many things.

Music's value is immeasurable.
Just imagine any given movie that you have seen or game that you have played, and remove the music from the experience altogether. If it is silent to begin with, remove any framing element that music would serve in your mind at any given point in the experience (I.E. thoughts of music and such). Imagine silence where there was once music in any situation. It fills a room as much as it can one's heart.
I'm also ashamed (but not terribly surprised) about the level of musical ignorance I'm seeing in this thread. No offense, but my standards of what to expect on the music front here is very low. These threads tend to be very disappointing.

My collection is in the 4 digits too, yet there are other songs I like out there, but I don't have them (well hey, I can't afford ALL the CD's I want. xD)
Music is a weird thing, you can like a certain artist but hate one of their songs. Or you can have a preference to a certain genre but still like the occasional song that's almost the opposite. I've noticed a lot of people in this thread seem to hate rap. I'd be inclined to agree, but there are a few rap songs that I do like (Although to be fair, those tend to have a tiny bit of singing in it too).
I still use the 'skip' button a lot, I find the music I listen to depends on my mood. As for value... It's different for each person. If someone tells you your music collection sucks, just ignore them. It's all about personal taste.

lastly, My friends enjoy different genres as well, but apparently not being well versed in knowing bands and singers and such is enough of an excuse to threaten me with tortures I won't repeat in this thread.
