Yeah, I mean making people pay for extra, purely cosmetic additions to the game? Additions that only people who really care enough will actually buy?

I mean, it's almost like it's an actual business trying to turn a profit or something.
Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.

Valve is a company. It's a game company that makes excellent video games but they're still a company. Like you said, those additions to the Co-op game are completely cosmetic and nothing more, but some people DO want those things and are willing to pay for them. If you don't like them, you don't have to buy them.
As long as Valve sticks to making great games without charging players for actual game levels and DLC content, I'm fine with whatever they're doing. The people who work there need to make a living.

"People value things I don't and are foolish for it"

Who are you to decide how people spend their disposable income? I personally plan on never buying hats from VALVe, but it's fine that others have the option to.

Chell is not a character, she's a floating portal gun. Glados is the only character in portal, and there's what 2 plot points in the whole game? It's the narrative equivalent of a comic strip, and that people seem to think it's one of gamings best narratives, and that it's the best example of humorous game (there's maybe 2, 3 jokes total), is what pisses me off. I actually enjoyed portal a lot and forced myself to play only one level per day so it would last longer. And are you really going to say the aperture science labs are an engaging setting? They're just a bunch of plain white rooms designed purely for the gameplay mechanics.
Narrative also includes the environment. To say Portal is lacking in Narrative is only half true. Lacking in plot, sure, I'll give you that. But plot does not always equate to the value of the story. The game's real narrative design is to put you into a world and have you explore it. What makes Portal and Valves other games special is originality. There was no other game like portal, or like left4dead when they came out.

Valve is a good production company specifically because they are always trying to figure out how they can do something differently. The AAAs are averse to trying anything new, and pump out the same game as many times as they can

Wrong

You know why Valve took 6 years to develop Half-Life 2? Because they put real effort into it. Half-Life 2 is their only 'deep' game? Fuck, even Team Fortress 2, a multiplayer-only game which started off with barely any story now has a deep and enriching back-story. Portal 2's story was utterly fantastic, and I'm learning new things about it even now I've completed it. Even Left 4 Dead, another game which started off with no real story now has a compelling serious narrative behind it all.

To say that Valve's games are shallow is to say that you've obviously never played through them properly, or haven't actually tried to enjoy them. I'd go on to insult you, but that would be immature of me and would probably put me on probation

We're not necessarily defending the store itself, and a lot of us won't buy anything anyway; but to say that we're mindless sheep for DEFENDING A MASTERPIECE OF FUCKING GAMING is just outright immature and deluded.

Its purely cosmetic and a feature. Use it or don't but don't complain about it being available for other people when you don't intend to use it.

I dont get what the hoot is all about this Day 1 DLC in Portal 2. i mean hell i bought the complete box, because im a collector kind of guy. hell it only cost me 35 bucks and im not looking back on it. What people forget is with DLC that is purely cosmetic in a game such as Portal 2 with the Robot enrichment and TF2's MannCo store is that whether you buy it not it does not in anyway affect gameplay. i am aware that TF2 does sell weapons, but then again i read the stats on them and they tend to balance it so general gameplay isnt effected. and

Games are supposed to be fun. Remember fun?

Who remembers fun before video games were expected to have the same narratives and themes as films?
Videogames are not supposed to be mindless fun, they've just got stuck with that name, it doesn't define them. It's like saying films are supposed to be silent because they're called "movies" and not "talkies". I can have fun playing sports and multiplayer games. Singleplayer is not just fun, it's for engaging experiences like fallout, mass effect, gta, yakuza etc. It's easy to create a linear shooter, stick some bots in it, and put in a mute protagonist and one or two other characters. It's 5 hours of mindless entertainment. Multiplayer/sports games give you hundreds of hours, and deep singleplayer games give you a memorable intellectual experience. That we're still regularly giving these primitive games 90%+ reviews is ludicrous. The only reason they haven't gone extinct is because they're cheap and easy to make and sell well.
Sansha is quite right, but valleyshrew, The reason why people still play mindless shooters is because that is what it is. Pure Mindless FUN. Not everything has to have deep meaning and story for it to be an engaging experience. hell i got more of a engaging experience playing Serious Sam then fallout mass effect and GTA, and the latter games are all ones i have played to death. Fallout relies on its story, Mass effect relies on it as well, it isnt engaging to be into stories all the time, and if you think you gain anything intellectual from a videogame you are a bloody tossbag, because games arent supposed to make you think hard therefore making it just for intellectuals. Companies like EA, Activision, and Valve are still going because they know what theyre target consumer's want. Look at CoD it still going because it is appealing to the right audience that Activision is aiming for.

Paying for cosmetic upgrades is the entire business model of Riot Games and they're rolling in dough... and charge up to $20 USD for some of these skins.
I would argue that Riot Games is, by the way, an incredibly large collection of marketing idiots, particularly when it ever concerns the EU.

I do agree with people here that complaining about this is stupid though. The Portal 2 DLCs do not affect gameplay in any shape or form, they're just there to fulfill many gamers' need to play dress-up in Minesweeper even. I know it's fashionable nowadays to find developers that have supposedly BETRAYED the gaming community, but in this case, they'll have to try harder.
