One step closer to the inevitable. While Sony makes a gaming movie player. Microsoft will be making the gaming computer..console.
Hate to burst your bubble but the ps3 already has mods for some games; and they're free too. At least the ones I have for UT3 are.
Once they start charging, that's dlc.

Yeah, but at least Valve states that some of the procedes will go to the origional creators, which I think 360 owners will be glad its going to the origional authers and not all going straight to Valve or Microsoft just because they want money.

Or it would at least make it easier to pay for.

Hopefully 360 owners get this, that would be nice.

And will the modders be rewarded for this?

Sounds awesome. I hope they'll be doing this for Left 4 Dead 2, since I plan on buying that and not the original L4D. But even if they don't, this is still two more steps in the right direction.

- if they give all the profit to the maker of the mods it will encourage more people to make better mods.

- if the mods remain free on PC, it means better mods & more mods for free

i see no downside unless they also try to make mods $ on PC &/or only release the mods on 360 to prevent people from playing them for free on PC.

Charging for mods that are free already?

Gee, if it came down to it, I'll just stick to the Pc version. I ain't giving Microsoft any more of my money.

What about the copyrights? If a mod uses the locations of a movie or another game, is that within the copyrights? I'm just afraid that the money would go to the original movie/game creators rather than the person who made the mod.

so your paying for something that is normally for free?

makes me glad I don't have LFD anymore, just so that I'm not among the console owners of LFD

Don't get me wrong, I do hope they get this done. I also hope that if money is exchanged, it does go to the developer of the mod, but I still think its weird to make console owners pay for what pc owners get for free. I get the feeling that the meeting for this went like: "well, we already got them to pay for the online service, I bet they'll hand over money for this too."

That said, I have given money for a couple of mods but those were donations made on a completely voluntary basis, to show my appreciation after I played them.

Simpsons Blizzard did it!

Though in regards to Premium Quality maps for SC2 rather than mods.

That's not to say I don't like the plan. Mod makers getting paid for their hard work can only be a good thing. Encouraging other games to have larger modding communities will only make games better and better. One need only look at Oblivion for evidence of that.

Sucks that MS will make them charge money for it whatever happens though.

If a mod uses the locations of a movie or another game, is that within the copyrights? I'm just afraid that the money would go to the original movie/game creators rather than the person who made the mod.
*Not a lawyer but...* It'd probably fall under free use/parody laws as long as you gave credit to the original creators; if you made a Shaun of the Dead mod, you'd probably credit Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg since they wrote it. Again, not a lawyer and after seeing how crazy Sony could be with LittleBigPlanet parodies it's possible that MS would do the same to protect themselves legally the same way Sony did.

It's times like this I really wish I had training in business law. Oh well.

Couldn't they focus on giving us the TF2 updates instead of the mods? I want my gosh-darn sandvich!

Micro$oft, charging the world for daring to use it's products.
The problem with that line of thought is that, unlike with Steam, this isn't Valve's platform. They're using Microsoft's services to distribute content: therefore, shouldn't they have to pay for it?

Besides, "Micro$oft" (fuck, I hate that dollar sign crap) already let them release one major update for free.

Like when they're using Internet Explorer?

Well, the big problem is that they're not paying for it; The consumer is. In any other business, this would be seen as immoral at best, but Micro$oft are allowed to get away with it because of their alleged illegal monopoly.
(European Court made the accusation, not me.)

Besides, "Micro$oft" (fuck, I hate that dollar sign crap) already let them release one major update for free.
One good deed does not make a saint.

Let's look at an example:

Let's say Esso wants to give free fuel to all Ford customers at the Ford Stations, but Ford force Esso to charge for it.

Would this even be entertained as viable? On the console market it seems to be. Would Dell ever say to load Firefox you have to pay us if you own a Dell Computer, as do Mozilla? No.

That's Micro$oft basically placing V.A.T.(GST) on anyone that uses it's platform, and I believe that only the Government is allowed to do that.

That's a step in the right direction, Valve. As a representative of the console owners out there, I'd like to say "thank you".
well said. although im not a fan of Valve, it is nice to see that one company is willing to do this for their audience. hopefully more companies will do this as well.

The whole reason people go "ZOMFG MODS!" is because they are free. The closest thing to that on consoles seems to be LBP, map editors on games, and the upcoming "modnation racers" or w/e the heck it is.

I don't think it's gonna happen, it would be really hard to be able to get mods on 360, I'm not saying I wouldn't like it, but it would be very hard.

If Valve figures this out, eventually it will advance and wont be something PC gamers will be able to truly hold over console players.
Though I hope a turn mods off feature is eventually added. I dont need peopel sniping me with sticky grenades... (like in Halo CE on PC)
You do realize that, you can't use a Mod if the server doesn't have it, right?
OT: Awesome, I wouldn't mind getting some gun skins. It'd be easier to install, I deduce. I hope we get all of them, and not just a few...
I dont like mods, so I avoid them. I also am mostly a console gamer, so no, I am not familliar with them. I just know that some are crap, some are unfair, and everyone ive ever tried has messed my game up. (Though I only ever got mods for NWN)

My guess why it cost money for 360 owners is because Microsoft has to essentially certify all mods brought over, then host them for xbox live, it would get pricey.

While on the PC, modders make the maps and many independent websites host the mods/maps, not Valve.

uh huh this sounds great, in fact it sounded so good that valve was mentioned in conjunction with consoles, I mean they haven't really been mentioned in conjunction with the xbox 360 since they last promised those updates.

Then maybe the 360 really does need a web browser or at least third party channels. You know there's people who would voluntarily host that, there's just no way to do that independently. I'm sure things get pricy (especially since time is money) for those who host pc mods but that don't stop them.
