Steams a brilliant thing for gaming, as in my opinon it deters some piracy of games, although i can't unfortuantly expolit the weekend deals, as it would take the entire week just to download anything from it, i just bought TF2 from the shops. and 5 hours of patching and im only 32% of the way though

god i need better internet :p

L4D server searching + ranking system FTL.

Also collision models for the zombies. Can't melee em if they get stuck in something or are crouched.

Call me crazy, but i wasn't a big fan of the first Half-Life or Day of Defeat.
Day of Defeat = Best Multiplayer FPS ever.

But yeah, I love steam and Valve. They brought so much to the gaming community and with steam, it is the best online video game store and DRM device.
If only they didnt screw up DoD:Source. :p
I thought source was much better, 1.3 suffered from being slow. Plus most of the maps looked goofy compared to Half Life or CS.

Valve are my all time favourite developer. I think they've stood the test of time remarkably well. It's a test to see which crumbles first: Valve or Creative Assembly.

I hate Valve. I've never liked the cruddy, buggy games they've released, and Steam is a waste of hard drive space.

...just kidding. Valve kicks ass (although Steam did kind of suck in its early days).

Meh I cant get into DoD:S is just...meh. Feels like counter-strike and not a WW2 shooter.

I haven;t played the original DoD at all, but my first feeling on getting DoD:S was, 'this is a mod'
Ok, it's certainly enjoyable to play, but it doesn't feel like anything special: certainly not up to the quality at which Valve normally does stuff.

I love them both. I think Valve is the only company I can think of that has never released a game that I didn't like.

They're both pretty much the same game.

About Steam, though. Yeah it's awesome. I never buy a game retail if it's on Steam.

I don't care about Valve much. Their an okay company but I just don't like most of their games. As for steam, well I hate digital distribution and will only turn to it as a last option. I will only use steam for games that can be played by no other means. I like my hard copies and I like my ability to not be dependent on a program to play certain games.

Now, first off I think Steam is brilliant, the concept of an online game library is brilliant as it sidesteps the twin woes of Scratched and Lost discs.

Being as everyone is pro-steam, however, it is my civic duty to point out the other side of the argument.

Yes, Steam is brilliant, and it has all your games stored on it, but think- what if Valve were to go into administration next month? What if EA managed to get enough cash together to buy out Valve, and decided to shut Steam down? I know it's unlikely to happen so quickly, but if Valve goes under it takes a HELL of a lot of money with it, as well as any chance you have of playing games.

Secondly, it requires you to connect to the internet to install even single player games. What happened to the good old days of popping in a disc and playing? Actually, on this point a friend of mine was moaning at me today about Steam. His problem? His copy of Empire TW had turned up one day before official release date. He put the disc in, and Steam refuse to let him install. In the old days, he would have been merrily playing it. Of course, it comes to release day, he installs it and Steam then has to download multitudes of patches so that he can use Steam, all so he can PLAY the bloody thing. With a console you throw it in the hole and off you go. Is this REALLY us drawing ordinary gamers back to the PC?

Lastly, Piracy. As I'm sure many of you know, I'm a self confessed pirate. I pirate games usually so I can find out if they will run on my system before I shell out on the D2D. With games like Saints Row 2, I will have to buy it and risk the game not working on my recently upgraded machine.

Steam, for as little as i've used it, is a good service. Much better then most PC gaming services. Valve themselves, however, I think are a bit overrated. Half-Life is not that great a series too me. Episode 2 was the only game I replayed, and Portal was a blast.

Hey, I'm pro-"The Thing That Killed Gamespy" any day. Gamespy killed my M-Player back in the day, so I'm happy to support Steam.

If Valve were to go under and Steam gets discontinued, I don't think it would necessarily equal the end of your ability to play the games on Steam. Chances are, Valve would release something that allowed you to use Steam without touching home base, thus allowing you to play Steam-linked games.

Steam is awesome. On that same note, so is Impulse by Stardock.

Escapist really likes valve (and steam)...and even though I do too, I'm going to just play devils advocate anyway.

"Internet to play games?! WHAT?!"

"Dude, Gordon doesn't even talk, and you just walk forward and shoot things. The gravity gun is kinda cool though."

Considering the time that takes Valve to make one game, EA would lose more money in buying Valve Co. then making money.

They already said they would release a patch to unlock Steam games in case of something happening.

I like it but at the current moment, my version of Portal has no voice acting rendering it useless.

I personally am a big fan of Valve/Steam and think they have done many great advances in video-games today. From technology with the source engine, to just pure fun with Portal, i think Valve is a dynamo in the bussiness/gaming world today.

Steam's great, I'm just worried that if they shut it down some day, I won't be able to play my games anymore and I'll end up having to buy them all over again.

Ive had mixed feelings on steam, I have CS on it and it works great but I tried to download the demo of Empire Total War and it would not run, re-downloaded it, still wouldn't run. I'm not buying that game of Steam as if it cannot even handle the demo, how can it handle the game itself?

Valve has been kind of weak for me lately. The TF2 scout update made me not want to play the game anymore and the recent L4D update, while good, had to be patched to get things in the patch to work. And I >still< have ping bars.

Mainly, it seems like they've split their resources and are trying to do too much with too little. I'm not really liking it.

In the past they've been pretty solid though, so this is really troublesome for me.

Steam is great though.
