Well, Dracula basicly. Although I wont go all nerdrage over a few alterations (e.g garlic or the river thingie). But there are some thing you DO NOT mess with, that's Sunlight and Diet! *Scowls at Twilight*

If a human drinks blood, then for all intents and purposes, they are a vampire.

For a more traditional vampire, they must drink blood to survive, burn when touched with an ash cross, die from a stake in the heart, and have hypnotic stares. Inability to enter uninvited and garlic intolerance is nice, as well.

Nos and Drac. The classics. Just out of spite from all of these "vampire series's" popping up, I felt like reading that one, really popular vampire book with that sexy guy. That's right. Dracula.

Edit: Basically, burn in sun, pale skin, canines, bat powers, widow's peak, attractive, Transylvanian, need blood, need permission to enter houses, and hate garlic.

EDIT EDIT: Right, the stake.
Dracula doesn't burn in the sun in the book. I wouldn't have said anything, but you did specifically cite the book.

Personally, I liked the Daybreakers vampires.

I prefer the World of Darkness (Masquerade) mythos regarding vampires. Different clans with their own abilities, sharing only a few common traits between them.

To be honest, I've always found the garlic thing a little silly. Of all things, why garlic? I mean, it is horrible raw but if I was creating a fictional monster I wouldn't put use a seasoning as a plot device to defeat the thing.
ever thought of a chemical reaction or the fact that it could just be poison for them? =P

3.has style (almost to the point of being pimp)
4.explodes/burns/evaporates in sunlight (does not sparkle)
5.seduces women
6.can hypnotize people
EDIT: forgot a few
7.stake to the heart is lethal to a vampire
8.garlic is poisonous for him
9.can be resurected with the blood of a virgin (see Castlevania Dracula X intro)
10. magic whips are also lethal

Vampire as defined by Xpwn3ntial:

An undead person who drinks blood for nourishment but cannot die of hunger.

Comes out of a coffin at night, not because of an aversion to sunlight, but for psychological purposes.

Can only be killed by having a stake run through its heart (Bram Stroker's Dracula).

Can transform into a bat at will.

May have otherworldly minions or hypnotize the living to do his bidding.

Cannot enter another person's home without permission.

My only definition is that a vampire is a human that drinks human blood to survive. Most often immortal and/or has superhuman abilities.

Sorry, there's just a little voice in the back of my head that screams at me when some mentions burning in sunlight when talking about the book. An oddly specific voice, huh?

Anyway, in the book he can't freely transform or cross running water unless it's daybreak, noon, dusk or nightime. So basically he likes to roam at night when he is unrestricted with his powers.

Dracula. Like most others have already pointed out, Dracula is badass. And he is kinda balanced. He can do awesome shit, but he also has lots of limitations. That's how I like my vampires.

I think ofvampires more like the ones from underworld, where they ignite into flames and not sparkle from sunlight.

Blood-drinking immortal that burns in sunlight, is extremely pale, and a fantastic seducer. They have fangs, cannot eat garlic, go over moving water, and the only way to be cured is to drive a wooden stake thought the biter's heart. They can turn into a bat and control bats. If they don't get blood then they go mad and only a rampage until they do. But besides that they are like your normal human being, not super strong, wealthy, or dead.

Personally, my favorite interpretation is the World of Darkness vampires.

Lots of good variance, and most of the clans each have their own little charm to them.

He burned in the sequel.
Hopefully in mentioning that book, the voice in your head is saying very violent things.
Mwahahaha.

I'm pretty sure he just sparkles in the sun. God is it so beautiful.

my preferred vampires are the ones from the old world of darkness mythos. They're close enough in terms of powers and weaknesses to be 'vampires' and not just a random supernatural defined as a vampire because that's cool - but they have an interesting personality to them as well. Failing that, Lestat is pretty much my archetypal vampire. <3
