WOO! Sounds like its doing you some serious good mate. (and I'm following the thread :p) as for the bikes, I can't recommend them enough. I bike a lot, often quite long distance (over several days) and it really takes some beating. I'd say to be on the road feels almost more liberating than to be in a car, cos you're moving slower and really feel free and open, as opposed on point a to point b. Plus it's rather good exercise, but less tiring than walking.

Oh, and walking your bike up the hill cos you're too lazy to ride it up is perfectly reasonable.

bikes like everything else the more money you spend the better the bike. honestly skip dept stores, go to your local bike shops (yes go to them all) check out the different models and sit on them.

ok here's some recommendations for bikes

1 for guys make sure the seat is comfy and can be adjusted front and back (long rides + uncomfy seat == sore twins)
2 go for a mountain bike, off roading does burn more than street
3 make sure it's a sturdy frame
4 make sure you enjoy it and the feel
5 ask the guys there what they recommend, bikers are usually more interested in getting you a good fit rather than a quick sale
6 look to spend at least $700 for a good bike

ok as for brands i recommend kona, they are sex on 2 wheels, i have a kona sex too (yes that is the name of it, they were forced to change the name) but they are very well built and if you manage to bust the frame thru normal use, they'll replace it and ask you how you did it and probly salute you for it too.

as a side note about kona they have a great sense of humour with names, one of their city touring bikes was called Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, the sticker went the length of the crossbar

but do talk to your local bike shop person

Seconded on the sore nuts on long rides. You cycle god knows how many miles, get off, sleep, wake up, get back on your bike and spend the next five minutes wincing in pain.

LOL!
I will def be careful when buying a bike! At least the seat part for sure.. I don't want the boys to be angry with me. We will probably go get bikes this weekend. The weather here hasn't been awful.. just wet (Indiana) so hopefully, we can even try them out.
Thanks for the tips!
DDR has been a great idea. I have a 6 year old daughter and DDR is perfect for us. I play for about an hour a night and she will play when I am done. She seems just as content to stand next to me and dance her own dances while I try to keep up with the arrows.
I think I may be losing weight though. My fiance told me I went from (instead of a 'six-pack') a keg belly, to a 4 pack and a safety cushion. We will see. I will weigh in around the 4 week mark.

I am a fat fella. I weigh in around 285 (pounds.. I'm an american. Also, I am about 5'8" to give you an idea to my plight) at the moment (down from 310lbs)My actual weight is deceptive because I have a pretty good bit of muscle mass from my earlier fighting years. I have, however, gained a pretty good belly also. If sumo was a bigger sport in the midwest, I would be all lined up for a new career. I feel that I could possibly lose about 80 or so pounds before I would be cutting into my muscle mass.
I plan to start a moderate exercise program with my not-fat-but-always-feels-like-she-needs-to-lose-weight better half later this week. To suppliment that, I have been considering taking up a semi-vegetarian diet. The semi part would come in with the keeping of eggs and dairy. I don't have a problem with animals being used for food or the way they are killed for that to happen.. I just want to feel better. (I know... I am a heartless bastard.)
Another reason I have been thinking on this is to improve my general internal health. Heart issues and cancer run in my family, and an all..well mostly meat diet doesn't seem to be ideal to avoid those in the future.
I know little about this diet as I have been nearly a carnivore for most of my life. The non meat things I eat are just there to enhance the meat experience. So now, I am a little at a loss as to how or even if I should procede.
Potatoes. Low fat butter, cheese and mayonnaise. You'll be fine.

Stick to your diet till the end, that is until you loose the desired amount of fat. Don't follow any diets that are currently popular but try to find something simple that will work for you. The biggest problem with diets is the so called Jo-Jo effect. That is when you are finished with the diet, if you go back to your bad eating habits you will quickly regain all the lost fat so even after you have finished dieting you should still try to avoid fatty food. You don't have to become a vegetarian to loose fat you can just as easily loose weight while still having meat in your diet.

Well, it's been just over 3 weeks.
I feel way better, several of my internal issues have been cleared up and I seem to have lost some decent weight.
Also, aside from the last two nights, I have been sleeping better.

We have not yet gotten bikes but are still exercising. I play DDR every night for about an hour or until my brain shuts down and I do self resistance stuff here at work.
My fiance has pointed out some changes she likes *wink, wink* and that makes me feel pretty good.

Also, I am not sure if it's the diet, the workouts, or what the deal is, but my.. umm... my libido is off the freaking charts. I won't go past that so as not to offend your senses, but yeah... I'll just say that I get alot less sleep these days.
So bonus there! Someone told me it was the bananas I've been eating so much of. (about two a day.. love the bananas! {insert gay joke here})
Also, they mentioned bananas as being good to eat before bed after a long night of drinking. I gave it a try last weekend and I'll be damned if I didn't wake up feeling just fine in my tummy. Normally, I would wake up feeling sick all day and really really dragged out. Saturday, I had 8 quart sized (32oz) and 6 regular (12 oz in the states) beers in about 3 1/2 hours time. (a light weight these days, I know... I don't get out much anymore) Sunday AM, I woke up after only 5 hours of sleep and felt fine! Only a mild headache, but I didn't feel sick at all!
Bananas FTW!

a bit of a and a bit of b, it's a combo of both really, tho more on the weight loss side and the fact your wife is more into you or is it the other way around ....

however being a veggie will change "your flavour" *nudge*nudge*wink*wink*, if the boss is put off by that, pineapple does the trick pretty good as well but it takes a few months

same goes for her too, if she has become a veggie or just get her to eat lots of pineapple

actually it's a full stomach in general, anything that absorbs water will do it, bread and pasta are good for that.

to cure the hang over i'd suggest drinking 1 glass of water to every beer and 2 for every mixed drink you have, i drink lots at the bar on fridays and never have a hang over cause of the amount of water i drink, mind you i gotta do my impression of a race horse in the morning but if that's all i gotta do, i'm fine with it

As has been previously stated, hummus is your friend. Put hummus on EVERYTHING. I eat hummus constantly, and it still blows my mind that something that tasty is really good for you.

Also, another piece of advice that most wannabe vegetarians overlook: AVOID CORN. It may be difficult since corn is in basically everything, but try to avoid corn products. Corn contains high amounts of sugars and not a lot in the way of nutrition. Also, try not to eat much white rice or white flour. White rice and flour has most of the nutrition taken out of it, so they're basically empty calories. It may be a bit more expensive, but either go for whole wheat flour and brown rice, or cut it out of your diet entirely.

Oh man.. I don't think I could even hold that much liquid! As it was, I was probably pushing my capacity with the beer alone. Besides, water would dilute my pool skills. For some reason, I get better with inebriation. I once won $50 in a game that I was so trashed I had to walk to the end of the table and lean really close just to ensure that the ball I wanted to shoot at was mine. I fell down at least 3 times during that game. The guy almost started a fight when he thought I was trying to shark him. Until the waitress confirmed that I was drinking pitchers (from the pitchers) by myself all night. Ahh the good ol days...

I haven't asked about my..*ahem* flavor *wink, wink, nudge, nudge* so i don't know. Fun subject to bring up tonight when I get home though! :)
Does the *wink wink* stuff remind anyone else of Monty Python?

actually that's what i was aiming for, i got a great 'ackney 'og accent for it too

and as for the water you drinking it when you get home not at the bar, tho i've heard gatorade works well too cause it has a lot of electrolytes and high in sodium so they're absorbed into your system quickly

i also drink semi-real (canadian) beer, real being british pints on tap mmmmmmmmmmm guiness, most of the time cept when afformentioned nectar of the gods is availible. so with american beer you could get away with a glass of water for every 2 beers

the main thing behind hang overs is your brain is dehydrated and screaming at you for it, it needs water, aspirin is one of the worst things you can take for a hang over, now the hair of the dog that bit you is always good cure

@ Nitrokitty:
But...but... cornchips... and cornbread! Taco shells! Tortillas! Moonshine!
I can't live without the corn!
I will try this.. hummus.. you speak of. It sounds too much like something you would use to grind things with, or in place of grout, but I will give it a go. My sister in law is a hell of a cook and makes stuff all the time. She probably has some laying around.

@Cleverlymadeup:
You dissin' my beer, son? Don't make me come up there. :)
lol.
Good to see other Python fans though! I was chanting SPAM under my breath the other day and no one understood it.

yes yes i am

i've been refused service at an american bar for "drinking too much" till they realized i wasn't drunk, the response was "oh you're canadian aren't you? i'll get you another one"

yeah sadly there's not enough of us out there or enough that get the more bizarre references, too many ppl only now the holy grail, while it's a good movie, i like life of brian and the flying circus better

the anniversary thing they did recently was great, where each one hosted their favorite parts of what they did, the john cleese one was bloody brilliant and they all did the one for graham including the eulogy at his funeral by john, which if you haven't seen it was so funny and fitting for him, it was a roast

the other thing i will say is if you're getting a scale get a good digital one that measures body fat, cause going by weight can be decieving, muscle weighs more than fat. also digital scales aren't as prone to falling out of whack, i somehow gained 15 pounds in 2 days with my el cheapo scale. so quinton rampage jackson is lucky for now :p

I?m? well? I don?t know how to reply to this. Sure, I?ve been a veggie eater for years now but I tend to not really like helping people until they realize there?s more at stake and potential with this lifestyle than changing their own personal health.

I can attest to the diet though. I lost 30 pounds and didn?t suffer any loss of muscle mass after being vegan for a while now. I?m now 6?3?, and 160(ish) pounds with a BMI of about 20.0. Those stereotypes of skinny, protein deprived, sickly looking people get blown out of the water once you go step for step with them in a marathon.

In fact, I?m actually a Wildland Firefighter in my spare time and I need to be in shape. It takes quite a bit of strength and stamina to fight forest fires for days on end without dropping dead from malnutrition and exhaustion. So it?s possible to go with this type of diet, remain healthy, lose a large amount of weight and still feel great.

There?s already been some really good advice given. I can only add a few things here and there.

Avoid plain, enriched bleached flour products. Go for the whole grains. This includes pasta, sandwich rolls/buns and bread, cookies and cakes.

You can go semi-vegetarian but you?ll still end up only losing a marginal amount of weight and it will be a bit of a struggle, without gaining the full health benefits for your troubles. Even if you don?t believe the moral reasons for changing to a veggie diet, you can transition to a full vegan diet and gain the vast health benefits that go along with it.

This means no milk-based products (cheese, butter, whey, etc.) and no eggs as well as no meat. This also includes a huge number of boxed, prepared and processed foods you?d find in the grocery stores since many of them have some form of these hidden in their ingredients lists.

The best way to truly enjoy this kind of a diet is to start learning how to cook! Most packaged food won?t offer the health benefits of the natural alternatives and most restaurants don?t serve many vegan dishes. Although, if you look around and find one that specializes in this kind of food, don?t pass it up!

The other benefits are the deserts. Any vegan variation of a non-vegan desert is guaranteed to be ten times healthier for you. This would be due, in part, to many normal desert dishes being out of the equation. Milk chocolate = no go. Cheesecake = no go. Ice Cream = keep dreaming.

The vegan variations though would include using some combination of bananas or applesauce and baking powder instead of an egg for baking and then adding whole wheat flour instead of that enriched bleached crap. There?s still going to be the sugar involved to some degree but you?ve already taken 2 of the 3 main calorie and fat ?bombs? out of the picture and replaced them with a healthier variant.

Whipping silken tofu up with a blend of mixed fruit, vanilla, or even chocolate syrup (Yep, some chocolate syrup is actually vegan!) and sugar-syrup (1 cup of sugar to 1/2 cup of boiling water and mix) makes a great smoothie. You can also put it in an ice cream maker and make yourself a banana split later on (minus the whipped cream). Again, fewer calories and less fat compared to ice cream or even frozen yogurt and it?s also a protein booster.

As a milk substitute, I prefer almond milk, although many people use soy milk or rice milk. I just prefer the subtle sweet flavor and slight nutty taste. It goes well with anything you would think of putting milk in as well.

I have a couple tips that helped me get down to a healthy weight.

First, don't just drink water, drink water as cold as you can stand it, at least a couple liters a day. The reasoning is thus: for every 1 degree C that liter is below body temp your body has to expend 1 calorie to bring it back up to body temperature. You can easily knock your effective caloric intake down by 100 cal a day this way.

Second, build some muscle and it doesn't need to be 'Da Governator' type. Not only do you burn calories exercising, but muscle tissue requires more energy to maintain than fat tissue does. Just get enough lean protein (fish, cottage cheese, and corn tortillas with black beans are favorites of mine) and keep working the muscles so they don't atrophy and your body will break down fat tissue for energy instead.

Lastly do your best to cut back on sugar. Soda is one of the worst things for you. Corn syrup is particularly bad because unless it gets burned immediatly it goes straight to your ass.

By doing a combination of these, I dropped 50 pounds from 240 to 190 (I'm 6'0") over two months.

Goodluck!

I've been a vegetarien for, hmm, about 15 years. I started when I was 6 or 7 (I think I was inspired by Charolette's Web, my parents are not vegetariens at all.) I'm not vegan, I don't eat any meats including chicken, Turkey, or fish but I do eat honey and eggs and drink milk. (Although I wish they would treat animals better and I don't see how anyone could disagree with that.)

Anyways, I exercise moderatly and actually don't eat too too healthy, but I think I'm pretty healthy compared to some of my friends... (I'm 160lbs. btw)

If you ask me, the key to a vegetarien diet is developing a taste for non-meat foods. Even after all this time it still really sucks for me when I go to, say, a buffet and there's maybe 2-3 foods I can eat and a bunch of tasty looking meat etc. that I can't touch... but it's not so bad if I really love those 2-3 things. Of coarse it also takes some determination and Will Power. I used to love shrimp. It was my favorite food before I stopped eating it. I guess I could say that I still miss it, but I will absolutly not eat it.

So I'll just tell you about my diet:

I eat lots of pasta. Not too healthy but I love it. I use Ragu Sauce and Parmasean cheese. I also like Eggplant Parmasean. (Not too big on Italiten foods.)

Like people have been saying, ToFu. It's awesome, I love it so much now I could just eat it plain. It's best mixed in with stir-fry though imo but it's just good prety much any way you serve it.

Speaking of.. stir fry! Vegetables or whatever else you can get in there. Various sauces like Teriyaki, I eat that a lot and it's actually pretty easy to cook (Although messy.)

Most TV Dinners have meat but there are a few that don't. They're not too good for you either but they're easy.

Concerning faux meat products, here in the states, Morning Star Farms is the best brand in my opinion. (Boca burgers are definatly the best veggie burger though) They also have a real lot of selections available, from soy protein veggie sausages (They're really good) to soy protein chicken or beef strips (Which I put in stir frys.) Oh, and their veggie ground beef is amazing too. I use it in Tacos and veggie chilli, or I could jsut eat it plain. The downside is how expensive they are... But as a vegetarien I look at them as occasional treats.

You should definatly try Hummus, it's really great. I like to dip pieces of Matzah (or whatever cracker you prefer) into it. There's a variety of flavors too. Go to a Middle Eastern kinda resturaunt and get a falafel (Deep fried hummus in a pita) and you'll see just how great hummus is!

Sushi is really great. Most of it has fish in it yes, but there's plenty of selection for me when I go to a (good) sushi resturaunt. Beyond plain avacado rolls, there's cucumber, carrot, vegetable tempura (in rolls and by itself,) mango (if you dare,) mushroom and roots. Also, Inari and Egg Custard Sashimi.

I drink Vitamin Water and normal water a lot, and usually a cup of juice every day. However, my favorite drink is Soy Milk. At first I tried it it seemed chalky but I quickly developed a taste for it and it's now my favorite drink. I recommend Silk or Pearl brand. Stop & Shop brand Nature's Promise is a more affordable tasty brand too.

Well, those are most of my favorite things. Besides those I eat everyday things like sandwhiches, cereal, rice(I prefer brown rice, it's better for you too,) and whatever meatless things I can get my hands on.

Oh yeah, and if you didn't already know avoid Trans Fat. From what I hear it's like, pretty much the worst thing for you. Trans fat comes from Hydrogenated Oils, and about two years ago the U.S. food people (Whatever they're called) passed a law saying that products must display how much trans fat are in things (It was previously not shown, but they finally realized how bad it was for you and forced companies to show this. That's why all food labels have Trans Fat listed on them now.) However! If there's just a tiny amount of trans fat in something they round it down to zero. I'm not dietician, but from what I've heard it's best to just avoid everything with Hydrogenated or Partially Hydrogenated Oils in it.

I suppose it's significant to note that in all this time since I was a child I've never had any sort of health issue concerning my diet (such as lack of protein or Iron) and I've never consulted any sort of diet doctor on the matter either, Perhaps I was lucky or my body adaptaed or something but I just don't worry about those things.

Finally, although you're becoming a vegetarien for health reason and not moral reason so this is probably irrelavant to you, but just pointing it out. Many products (Jello, Marshmellow, some candy, random tv dinners) have geletin in them, which comes from animals (Boiled animal fat with water I believe?) Also, some Romano cheese has Rennet in it. And some Rennet comes from Sheep's stomachs (Some doesn't however.) While health wise these small little ingrediants of meat probably don't do anything, I avoid them because you have to kill them animal to get them.

Good luck in your health endeavors!
